Poor Clock Management By Coaches Cost ASU

Robber & Get Ready,

Quit lying....S.U. just beat you all down for 5 years in a row including 98. It is just sad that someone would say "finish the deal" when referring to cheating.
Sad

ASU lost because their clock man CHEATED the whole damn game....

Lemme say that I consider most of ya'll pretty knowledgeable and smart about that game of football. That said, how can any of you accuse ASU of trying to cheat by screwing w/the clock. Clock malfunctions are a pretty common thing at Cramton bowl, ask anyone whose's attending more than one game there. Secondly, if you're gonna cheat, wouldn't you do so by taking a few seconds off at a time so it wouldn't be noticeable? Not remove minutes, then go out altogether, then come back w/added minutes. Lastly, that's the city's stadium, operated by city employees which include the PA announcer and clock operator. The don't care who wins as along as they get their cut of the gate. :smh: :smh: :smh:

Basically Run the ball, take the delay of game penalty and then punt. Coaching in the SWAC is terrible. Before this game I thought we had at least one good team in the SWAC capable of winning outside the SWAC.

SU was on a roll.... I kept telling everybody around me that if they got the ball back they were going to win... Didnt matter how long they had to drive. I knew SU was going to win when they got the ball back. The crowd had got back into the game and they had hella momentum.

That game reminded me of the 98 Magic City Classic when Bama State came back from 28-0 down to win in OT.... once Bama St had momentum it wasnt nothing AAMU could do.

Regardless of what a PA Announcer says - the OFFICIAL TIME FOR THE GAME - GAME CLOCK AND PLAY CLOCK - IS KEPT ON THE FIELD BY THE REFEREES!!!!! An electronic clock on the scoreboard is for convience only. It helps fans keep up with the game much easier - but scoreboard clocks, time superimposed on games we see on tv - they are all unofficial. That goes for Basketball also.

There was no cheating on ASU part - the clock went out about 6 mins left in the second quarter and it was not worth a damn from that point on. Besides, if ASU were to "cheat" - why would we have had the clock working perfectly during SU last drive - and it did work perfectly, Im sure everyone who was at the game can tell you how much time was left on the clock on the last score.

Now, This is the official log from the NCAA, not anyone opinion.

1) On Drive 23, we got the ball with 12 minutes left in the game, HAD A 2 PLAY DRIVE, and THE OFFICIAL TIME WAS 7:07 LEFT IN THE GAME.

2) The drive with the 3 incomplete passes actually started with 7 minutes left in the game (CHeck Drive 24)

3) There were 2:40 left in the game on our 3 and 10, we threw 2 incomplete passes and the clock said 1:55.

4) On thier last possession, the clock started with 1:55 left. We called a timeout after the first 2 plays, the clock still ran down to 1:17, that's when they threw the last pass. NO WAY SHOULD THE TIME HAVE EVEN BEEN 1:17.

You can check the whole thing out yourself athttp://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/driveSummary.jsp?expand=A&acadyr=2004&h=7&v=665&date=02-OCT-04&fn=2200420041002.HTML

Aslo another question is the city of Montgomery done with ithe Crampton Bowl renovations????? That has to be the most unconfortable stadium I have ever been to.... This was my first time going since 96 when we played Carver-Montgomery in football... back then I didnt remember having to sit on concrete .... but it looked like the visitors side had bleachers.... That needs to be the next thing they renovate because if you dont have no seat cushion on ASU's side then you are going to be hurtin.

I just wanna know how in the heck was the clock malfunctioning throughout key parts of the game but at halftime it worked perfectly??

I'm laughing out loud at SU posters complaining about the operation of the clock at Crampton Bowl. When AAMU first joined the SWAC, some SWAC fans told me about the operation of the clock at Southern. I did not believe them because I thought the conference would not allow those type of shenanigans to exist. Then AAMU went to Southern that first year, and I became convinced that those SWAC fans were telling the truth. That clock worked well, just as long as Southern was ahead. The minute we went ahead, that clock went out and stayed out while we were leading. The moment Southern came back and took the lead, the clock came back on and stayed on as long as SU was ahead, which was the rest of the game. I surmised that Southern was preparing to manipulate the clock if they needed more time near the end of the game. There were the same problems with that clock the next time we went down there.

The SU posters are the last group of people who should complain about a malfunctioning clock. SU made management of uncertain time on the clock an art form. Although SU seems to have addressed that problem with its new clock, that doesn't erase the fact that SU did use the malfunction of its old clock to obtain advantages over SWAC foes. Robber mentioned the time JSU were driving for a win, only to be told that time had run out.

I bet that clock worked properly when white colleges such as Northwestern St. came to Mumford.

Because there's no stops and starts, just hit a button and let it roll. That scoreboard clock/system is old and janky, only the bulbs have been changed since the stadium was built.

Thanks for a logical explaination.

I agree, and that's what I told folks sitting around me.

However, it did take a while before they started it. The white hat stood right in front of me (Section O) and gave the start the clock signal for about two minutes before they got it running. He probably wore out his rotator cuff.

The only thing that this speel of already known info proves is that what happened at Mumford AND Cramton this weekend was wrong and should have been handled in a better way. Don't make me get started on Memorial in Jackson either GR.

If the the folks running the stadium knew the clock wasn't operating correctly at 3:55 pm, then LOGIC should have prevailed and the clock should've never been run during the game. The time should've been maintained on the field only, with P.A. announcer updates every 5 minutes or so. It certainly would've cut down on all the drama in the stands.

During the 4th quarter I was thinking, "Lord be with the city of Montgomery if the clock 'quits' on SU's final drive." It might've gotten ugly as fans walked back to their rides.

You won't have this clock problem in Crews this weekend. Our clocks will let the Jags know exactly how much tail-kicking time is left in the game.

As a member of the media, I was there and I can truly say that it certainly was a lot of drama going on that afternoon. I call hsit like I see hsit and it's a shame that clock management seemed to play a part in ASU's loss to SU. Personnel working with ASU's SID department tried their best to make the clock operator in the press box to stop running the clock when they had a person on the field communicating with the officials. The officials had sent word to PB to tell the operator to stop running the clock and just put it at 0:00 because they were keeping the official clock on the field. The AD tried to make him stop running the clock as well to stop the confusion. But to no avial he was being a typical arsehole about the situation and kept on doing what he wanted to do. At one point during the fourth quarter, one of my colleagues had gone down to get an assessment of the situation. She came back and told me it was crazy. One of the SU coaches at one point asked the CO if the time was right on the clock and out of frustration (I guess) he said yes when the clock on the board was really a minute and a half behind. I'm not trying to sound racist about the situation but when it comes to HBCU's playing against each other at Cramton Bowl, the caucasian persuasion could care less. They'd rather be sitting at home watching an Alabama or Auburn game than be there. I've been at the bowl at times during high school games when the clock went haywire and if the CO was told to stop operating it, he would cooperate. Did clock management play a part in Bama State's loss? I can't say it did or didn't. I will express my feelings on that in a different post.

First, there is a world of difference between what happen with the clock at Cramptom and what happened at Mumford. Yup, the clock at mumford would go out at times. BUT IN THIS GAME, ENTIRE BLOCKS OF TIME ARE MISSING. LOOK AT THE OFFICIAL GAME LOG I POSTED ABOVE. ~5 minutes are just missing.

I don't think there was any conscious cheating on the part of the officials.

As for the game book evidence, I'd say the guy keeping that was as confused by the clock as everybody else. After all, he had no way of knowing the time either, as he was not in contact with the official on the field who was actually keeping the time.

I think the scorer just mistakenly put the times that showed on the clock on the log. It ain't the only mistakes he made in that game.

I am not saying they cheated, but they screwed up. IMHO, most swac refs are to incompetent to be trusted to even cheat right.

Let me go on record as saying ..............They cheated (in other words I will agree to disagree with all opposing perspectives).
