Jackson police say they will leave to a Hinds County grand jury whether to charge several Jackson State football players after a student implicated them in attacks on a JSU student before he was slain at an off-campus party.
Ryan Henderson, 19, of Atlanta, was killed by a shot fired by a friend when they returned to the party after the alleged attacks.
Jarrod Emerson, 25, has been charged with murder in Henderson's death.
In a recorded statement taken in a meeting with Henderson's family attorney, Lee Frison, and Emerson's attorney, Winston Thompson, former JSU student Howard Nelson gave details of seeing several current and former football players "jump on" Henderson at the party March 24 at the Palisades Apartments just off the JSU campus.
Jackson State President Carolyn Meyers has said the university is leaving the investigation to JPD.
Frison, an Atlanta attorney, said the 39-minute recording was taped in a meeting at Thompson's office on Saturday night.
The meeting included Nelson, his parents, and Dominique Bell, a JSU student who reportedly held Henderson's hand as he died.
Nelson described how he, Henderson and two other friends attended the party. He said he saw Henderson talking to another male.
"Ryan said, 'I think they're fixing to try to jump me. I bumped into them but I said I was sorry,'" Nelson said.
"He said, 'I apologized to the man, but I think we need to leave.'"
As the teens tried to leave the party, they were approached by the person Henderson had bumped into. He pointed Henderson out, and several people stormed Henderson, Nelson said.
At one point, they broke free of the melee, and tried to leave again, but Nelson said seconds later, Henderson was stopped and attacked again.
