I totally disagree. Also, playing an in-state 1-A school (except for MAYBE UL-Monroe) you have a 5/95% chance of winning (I'm assuming we are not including LSU cause that would be negative chance of winning). You play to win. If you lose, you lose. If you are scared to compete with those on your level, drop to D2.

Where in the hell did I say we were scared? I said it makes very little business sense to play a Southland Conference school. Playing a D1A school has much more reward in it than playing a Southland school and much less risk. That's business. You take the less risk and more reward option every time in business right.

And if you think none, I mean none of our programs have a chance at beating those lower tier D1A schools like a ULL, Tulane, or a ULM, well that just shows what you THINK of your own program. Wow...TigerPRIDE Really? Man can't do nothing but SMH on that one...

Man get pass that "less than" complex you got, you and "88"...the reality of the situation is, if you played those school every year, with the intentions and drive to compete on that level it would only bring your program up. Your players would get use to playing at that level and know what to expect and how to prepare for those games. I strongly believe we could compete at that level if it became a common thing and the business of the situation would make a whole lot of sense, much more than playing the NW States, Southeasterns, and McNeses of the world.

How is that scared if I am proposing to play teams that are, on paper at least, better than the ones you claim I am scared of....just makes more sense to play up....

Exactly. Using that thought process, we would never be able to play any decent FCS opponents because teams would "have a lot to lose" if we beat them.

Why wouldn't make sense? You will be playing winnable games right in your own backyard. Northwestern State has been killing us with recruiting in-state talent, but if we show we can beat Northwestern State, maybe those players start coming to SU again. I absolutely hate seeing a player in Baton Rouge not even consider Southern, and would rather go play at Nicholls State(who barely has an athletic program) and Southeastern because they think they are better programs. We all know these kids think playing in the SWAC is beneath them, and the only way to change that perception is by beating those schools.

Re: Play AD for a day!...Pick your school's perfect football schedule and explain why

Dude, not one of us can beat a Sunbelt school. You just co-signed dude saying he scared to play a Southland team yet you call a Sunbelt team beatable. Is a Southland team beatable too? Didn't ULL beat ya'll by like 4 TDs already?

And they aren't paying attention to ULL beating a very good mid-major San Diego State in a bowl game. ULL is getting some good talent and they have a good coach as well. We would get destroyed. Tulane and ULM on the other hand would be games we could hang around for a 2 or 3 quarters and come out with some dignity.

I understand that logic too...believe me I do, but eventhough I do believe that those are definately winnable games, I still think that the risk out ways the reward. Winnable is one thing, but why take that chance when you could shoot higher with less risk. Plus the money is different with those games than with a D1A game. There is no payout when you play a Southeastern, cause they are gonna want a Home and Home so you make money one year and spend money the next. Same with either of those Southland schools. So why not play ULL at their place and split the gate....Expenses are not that bad to go right up the road, make that money and come on home. Same with going to New Orleans for a Tulane game same win win...And if you loose the game then ole well just a "L" on the record, but if you win the game or are even really competitve the rewards are astronomical. Recruits would see you playing UP and doing bigger things and that is what those kids look at and take notice of....

If you beat one of those Southland schools then it looks good and would probably be noticed by those youngsters, but what if you loose....then you dig that hole deeper and hurt your image more when you didn't have to...and you don't even get paid for your effort, but your competition (those Southland schools) would love it cause they'd get a payday out of it when we come and fill their stadium for them....see what I am saying about the risks and rewards of the two situations.

For some reason I would want to see us do a home and home with either Appy or James Madison. lol

You play teams like that when you are scared. If you wanna support playing these schools, say it's for the $$$. Playing up and losing to Tulane gives you a built in excuse. But if you get skull drug by McNeese, you have no excuse. Playing up is just another name for playing scared. Play a team on your level for a real test. Same goes for 1-A schools. My love, GaTech, is playing Presbyterian.. WHY? Those games should be banned. There are plenty of 1-A schools for us to play.

Those Southland schools are our competition until we start to dominate them and the rest of the other FCS programs we can forget about being competitive with FBS schools..

Re: Play AD for a day!...Pick your school's perfect football schedule and explain why

well we will have to agree to disagree, at least on some parts of your statements....I am thinking of the whole picture....the competition aspect, the image aspect, and just as important if not more, the Financial Aspect....I said think of yourself as an athletic director and what is the overall best for your program and not just in the short term, but long term as well....Playing those schools does nothing, I mean nothing for our bottom line and if I am wrong show me how....But great discussion anyway...

Re: Play AD for a day!...Pick your school's perfect football schedule and explain why

If we only had to play 7 SWAC games, I would include these schools on the schedule:

Tennessee St.-natural rivalry due to location of the schools & growing animosity from TSU fans who probably thought AAMU would be a guaranteed win during the recent times that we've played them, particularly in their own classic

Rotate Tuskegee & Miles or Stillman-every other year for the Louis Crews Classic, again the close proximity between the schools, alumni & family connections

Rotate Chattanooga, Jax St, UNA (now that they have moved up), South Alabama the games against Chatt. & S. Alabama would be soley to make our presence in the area for recruiting efforts...I have witnessed Jax St. & UNA win recruits that would have considered AAMU. The used their Championship success to get an edge as well as being more agressively locally. The way to squash all of that is if we simply beat them. I don't know if other ADs have done this, but probably more than any other game, I will pressure my coach to beat the daylights out of UNA & Jax St. I might even consider a Lobster Dinner, raise, bonus, or something just for getting the job done. I just don't like those schools, especially Jax St....LOL

a lower level 1-A school that is nearby such as UAB, MTSU, Vandy, U of Memphis- just a test, you never know when or where lightning may strike

somewhere above I'd add an at least one MEAC school...playing Hampton in Chicago was cool...I'd love to play my favorite MEAC school which is South Carolina St.

I get what your saying from a financial sense it doesnt make sense but from an image standpoint we need to take care of those schools on the field...Perception is whats killing our programs now...I just look at us beat Delta State Division 2 NCAA runner ups...After that game they gave JSU praise for this or that but going in they thought we were a automatic W for them....Maybe it just the competitive side of me coming out but if we win on the field and with the community the money will start flowing in...Everyone supports a proven winner...but good convo tho!

Re: Play AD for a day!...Pick your school's perfect football schedule and explain why

I would have Texas Southern play FAMU, LSU (at least for the next 4 years), UTexas, and Oregon...Hey got to have the money to run the program...LOL!

Your point is more to the point I was trying to make about beating the Southland and other FCS playoff schools during the regular season in an effort to get the NCAA to notice what we were doing and to move the Playoffs back a week so we all could be included without cutting of our cash cows...(But that is another conversation all together)...I agree with you on that...beat them on the field...make a statement, and again I am all for that, but I am more trying to kill two birds with one stone without the risk of hurting our image....I just don't us maximizing our dollars by dealing with the likes of the Southland Conference, now granted I am looking at this from an SU standpoint....I may think differently at one of our sister schools in the SWAC where the situation may be different...

TXSo getting beat by point margins of 50,60,70 and 80 points every year will affect team and school morale..

Re: Play AD for a day!...Pick your school's perfect football schedule and explain why

Bare with me....I hope I am not treading in waters where I don't belong, cause I am an Outsider looking in....but if I were AD at a J-State...
with a 9 game mandate that would only leave me with one game to play with (being that Tenn. St. is a given) and it would always be a home game...Delta State is a good one cause you don't ever ever ever have to return that game to their place....or some how persuade Southeastern to come up 55 and play from time to time, but I wouldn't go down 55 to their place ever....

For a Grambling, again as an outsider looking in...I always thought Grambling did well when they traveled anywhere in the country. Probably one of the most popular HBCU football programs of all. So take paydays, as long as they are worth it, at every opportunity. And I would keep that game against ULM cause it is playing up and those programs are not that far apart in distance or in talent....

Now for a School like Valley as I understand it, the 9 game mandate helps them very much...so for the other two I would try and work a home and home with a Delta State or find some D2 schools in the region that I could persuade to come to Rice/Totten Stadium. But if not then you are basically in the Payday game for both of those out of conference games...

Got to get back to work, but I will sneak into more of other people's business later...

The state of Mississippi is why Valley and DSU don't play... as much sense as it makes for DSU to play JSU, it's a no-brainer with only 35-40 minutes seperating those two schools.

Arkansas State is only two hours away and Central Arkansas is close as well. UT-Martin is about 4 hours and the Nashville schools 5 hours. The only FBS schools that I would even consider above Sun Belt schools are MSU, USM and Ole Miss (proximity). Since we probably have to play a money game or two under a 7 game mandate, go with schools within reasonable distance (ASU, USA, Tulane, ULM, ULL, USA, Troy, JSU, etc.)

Re: Play AD for a day!...Pick your school's perfect football schedule and explain why

If I were an AD and we had the 7 game mandate back I would want to see JSU continue to play TNState....One other HBCU game against a MEAC school like BCC, FAMU, Howard or Norfolk...One money game against a lower tier FBS program and another game against a top regional FCS program like GA Southern...

What's the current SWAC record vs the Sunbelt conference w/in the last 10 years?

Surely the SWAC is > 51% W-L, eh?

Excuse me while I lol @ some of the unrealistic notions. :emlaugh: Certain SWAC schools cannot win IC yet alone attempt to go OOC vs D-I FBS and think they'd merit a victory. :emlaugh:

This is the reason that I have a hard time discussing sports with most women. sTu Playing LSU 4 times makes no sense and is basically suicidal. DCG has set women in sports back at least 20 years. :emlaugh:
