Kobe Bryant Discusses Miami Heat’s Support For Trayvon Martin

In the March 31 issue of the New Yorker, Kobe Bryant discussed life, race and the inevitable conclusion of his illustrious basketball career with Ben McGrath. Perhaps most shocking is Bryant’s assertion that wide-spread support for Trayvon Martin was premature and he refused to show support for the slain teen simply because he’s African American.

According to Colorlines, when McGrath asked Bryant’s opinion on the Miami Heat’s show of solidarity with Martin in the now iconic “Hoodie†photo, the 35-year-old L.A. Laker said that such a move showed lack of “progressâ€:

I won’t react to something just because I’m supposed to, because I’m an African-American,†he said. “That argument doesn’t make any sense to me. So we want to advance as a society and a culture, but, say, if something happens to an African-American we immediately come to his defense? Yet you want to talk about how far we’ve progressed as a society? Well, we’ve progressed as a society, then don’t jump to somebody’s defense just because they’re African-American. You sit and you listen to the facts just like you would in any other situation, right? So I won’t assert myself.â€

yep, some cats just need to shut up and throw a ball in a basket. That idiot has a child too.

What role did Kobe's treatment from blacks as a youth play in regards to his comments about Trayvon? I remember it was reported or expressed by Kobe that he didn't fit in or had difficulty being accepted among his peers upon moving from Italy to Philly.

You are right he is free to speak his view, but when you are a rapist that paid your way out of jail, you shouldn't be quick to judge anyone. In fact it was the same white people who are glad to see Trayvon dead that wanted his sell out azz in jail for life because of rape. Just proves that black folks are hypocrites when they have money and get out of trouble. If Kobe would have been poor like Trayvon his black azz would be doing 30 to life for rape.
that just kobe opinion. freedom of speech.

Did I miss something?

He didn't make a comment about Trayvon, he gave his view point on the Miami Heats wearing the hoodie (although he was wrong)

All he did was say what most of us say all the time "I don't take sides just because a person is black" paraphrasing of course.

Y'all in here acting like he said Trayvon should have been killed.

Jesus the hate is just unfreaking real.

Kobe didnt rape anyone. It was evidence to prove that. what are you talking about? Kobe just gave his stance on how he felt about the Miami heat team wearing the hoody. "btw Kobe never ask for support from the black community either" stop making stuff up.

Man you sound bout retarded. The money you have determines the evidence presented in court. Kobe is a punk.

He basically implied that Kobe was out of touch with social issues(affecting the African American community) in America because Bryant grew up overseas

That and he wouldn't even call Kobe if there were a roundtable of celebrities to deal with social issues today.

This has nothing to with Kobe hate. I don't even know where some of yall are even getting that idea from. Kobe made these comments recently AFTER the trial and everything that has come out (jurors saying that they think he got away with murder), etc. Kobe pealed the scab off an old wound. He backtracked yesterday after the backlash he got
