Mr. Rashad does have the name "Okra" in quotes, as you would an unofficial nickname.....

lol. and you sound like an unofficial mass comm major. The absence of the word THE and the fact that it comes after Tennessee State .. implies that the name of the team was OKRA. ... Not to mention the title of the story and the whole tone ... and the fact that it's a story about JSU WINNING. lol.... Don't try to fix it for him... IT WAS SMACK. Don't b.s. about it. It was smack and we all know it was. .. and in my opinion smack ont he front page is unprofessional.

Semantics.... The University of North Dakota goes by 'Sioux' or 'Fighting Sioux'..... Is there really that much of a difference?

Yes, the difference is that Delta State University, located in Cleveland, MS, does not go by "Okra". They are Delta State University, the Statesmen, or the Fighting Okra. We are not talking about UND.

So what do the quotes imply? Nothing?

Ok MH, let me see if i can explain...

In news writing first reference should always be clear. On first reference you always use clear, official terms when refering to a subject. ... i.e. you would not use "J-State" in a story before using "Jackson State". On first reference DELTA STATE... or even DELTA is the correct word usage. On secocnd reference you can be more loose... ex: DSU, the Statemen, or EVEN "the fighting Okra" ... Whether or not Kenn understands these first day of school concept ... i don't know. But the bottom line is OKRA was meant as smack. period. ... come on MH.. .you and I both know it. lol.

remember when SU lost to South Dakota St., and how ALL of us had fun with the "Rabbits" name.

"Okra" is no different.

Actually, it's "worser". It's a vegetable.
:D

Believe it or not there was some research conducted before making the decision to use "Okra". It is not something that I used out of the blue.

The official colors are green and white. Since 1975, Delta State's mascot has been officially known as the "Statesman", however in recent years the unofficial mascot has become the "Fighting Okra". The "Fighting Okra" was featured in the "Okraphobia" episode of the Food Network show Good Eats.

This is the difference:

UAPB has had losses against Texas Southern and Sioux.....

if it said UAPB has had losses against Texas Southern and THE Sioux it's a completely different sentence.... and SIOUX is not used in your first reference.

The story did not say:

Southern has lost to Tennessee State and Rabbit.

as if Rabbit was a school. lol. come on MH..... I know it's a school day, but yall are killin me.

Why did you not use quotes on Sioux? Does that not make a difference? I can understand your point on first reference, though.

Dayum...you guys are really mad about this huh?

:lmao:

Maybe if JSU would have taken all this aggression out on that Okra we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I think yall need to lighten up.

If the same statement had been written about A&M or Prairie View or even Bama State, I don't think any JSU or SU people would have been in here pretending to take the "high road" on this issue. Yall woulda been laughing out loud, and taking it for what it is - a good natured jab on a program that's made a few slip-ups over the past few years.

Come on folks, this is the SWAC Page. We can poke a little fun, and have a laugh in here.

...and there it is!!

That was proven when someone referred to Alabama A&M as "apes and monkeys." Strange, we saw no outcry for such disrespect in that instance.

You're right MH. Its one thing to get your arse whooped by a "meat", but to lose to a "vegetable" . . . :smh:

THE SIOUX clearly tells us that that's their mascot
To say SIOUX in this context implies it's the school's name.'

I'm not sure why he used quotes. The usage was probably to just bring more attention to the smack in the sentence. lol. I wish Kenn would just atleast admit he was smackin JSU and stop with all this b.s.
