JSU's Charlie White arrested

ya'll know bullets come down pretty fast and hard

You took the words right out of my mouth. I remember it had to be like 2 years ago on New Years Eve that a bullet came crashing through my winshield, through the dashboard, and finally got stuck on the panel of the drivers door right by my leg and foot. So who knows where those three bullets ended up, there could be someone thats in the hospital right now from one or more of those bullets that he fired from the gun.

Surely this did not happen at THE JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY....surely not by a student, yet alone an ATHLETE. Stop playing. These type of things only happen at Southern University.

JSU's White expelled for campus arrest

Former Provine point guard's athletics fate pending appeal of dean's ruling

By David Brandt
[email protected]

Jackson State basketball player Charlie White was expelled from school Tuesday for violations of the student code of conduct, meaning he likely won't be able to play for the Tigers this season.

White has 24 hours to appeal the decision. JSU coach Tevester Anderson said he expects White will appeal.

"He's going to try and see what he can do," Anderson said. "It's a shame because he's a good person, but he did something he regrets in the spur of the moment. Schools have regulations and if you break the rules then you have to pay the consequences."

White, 21, could not be reached for comment.

White was arrested on weapons charges after allegedly firing a gun on campus on Sept. 22. According to a police report, the JSU department of public safety witnessed several fights during a pre-alumni dance on campus just after midnight.

During the fighting, White allegedly fired four shots into the air with a .380-caliber handgun in the parking lot of Alexander Hall.

He was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner. He posted a $10,000 bond from the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond later that day.

The first charge is the most serious, carrying up to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted. The latter charge carries three months in prison and a $500 fine.

His initial appearance in court is scheduled for Jan. 22.

JSU Dean of Students Marcus Chanay handed down the sanction following an informal hearing. White, who requested the informal proceeding following his arrest, attended the hearing.

White would likely have played a major role on this year's team. He played in 32 games last year, averaging 7.8 points and 3.2 rebounds and was the state'sMr. Basketball in 2003 for Provine High School.

"Jackson State University takes the safety of its students and staff very seriously," said Chanay in a statement released by the school. "Possession of weapons on campus is a violation of university policy and state law. We followed our judicial process to address this breach of that policy."

The probable loss of White hurts JSU's chances of improving on last season's 15-17 record (10-8 SWAC).

The Tigers begin practice in two weeks and return leading scorer Trey Johnson, but will now have to find a way to win without their projected starting point guard.

Catraiva Givens is the team's only other returning point guard. He averaged 3.8 points in 32 games last season.

"Losing Charlie is a big blow in every way," Johnson said. "I know he wants to be back on the court with his teammates and he's trying to keep his spirits up. Hopefully, they'll reinstate him. But if not we'll just do the best we can."

And that is exactly what he should have gotten. Hopefully he'll take this time to better himself.

Told ya'll he got more problems than school and basketball now.
When these MoFo's in Mississippi say "No weapons on City or State property" they mean it.:retard:

They gonna fall all over themselves proving to parent's they mean business when it comes to these highschool and college campuses around here.:smh:

Charlie f-ed up bad this time.

That dude is just plain idiotic. Simple and plain. He needs his butt locked up. Shoot, send him up north with Clarrett and let them both share a cell together.

Beans.......
While I must admit my initial reaction was to lock him up.........I have softened my stance some what. Please understand that I DO NOT ADVOCATE ANYONE discharging a firearm, posessing a firearm, using or storing a firearm on or near an educational facility (other than research and or contractual purposes), at this point I would say NOT SO FAST.

Some of us are old enough to remember when Brian Bosworth and some of his buddies shot up (or were impicated in) shooting up the OU campus when he was listed as student there and Barry Switzer said let's not jump to conclusions before a thorough investigation takes place. I'm not saying there was a cover-up but there certainly was some foot dragging and I am not sure if anything ever came from that situation. I do know that whenever these situations have occured involving white students people seem to be hesitant to act or react to the event.

Those IDIOTS here in the State of Alabama who were students at Birmingham Southern Univ (where tuition is running around $40,000 per year) who went around setting churches on fire a year or so ago were not ostracized for what they did, instead their school B'ham Sou has raised nearly one quarter of a million dollars ($250,000) and the SGA has an initiative going to volunteer to help rebuild all of the churches these buffoons burned down. Also, the Black church members and their pastors came out saying and encouraging their members to pray for them. Yeah I admit, we can all use prayers anytime or anyehere.........yet you seldom hear anything about this any more and no one is saying lock them up?? In fact the attorney's asked the judge in a preliminary hearing to allow these fools to remain locked in the local facility (instead of prison) so that they could be near their families???

No, one person acting an idiot is ever justification for another to act in the same manner BUT , we (BLACK PEOPLE and BLACK PROFESSIONALS) and society as a hole can be a little quick to condem and lock-up young BLACK
MALES while whites (males and females) are given 300 hours of community service and may be suspended from the team for a semester or a year with the understanding that they will be allowed to re-apply to the school or can try-out for the team again????

Please understand that there is no smack intended in my next statement but these youngsters today (including my own when they were between 16 & 20 years old) take such a fatalistic approach to all of their perceived problems in their personal, school and home life situations. Maybe he is a product of his environment??? Yes, we expect more (and SHOULD exspect more) of our students at our HBCU's but I think we should not be so hasty to jump on the bandwagon that says just send them to the nearest lock-up until they get their mind right???

These youngsters today think that their only way out of any situation today is to stand their ground and fight even if it means dying ("just don't let nobody make you look like a punk"). Quite a few of these athletes went to predominantly white schools and played for white coach's who gave them 'special' treatment and gave them 'special' favors yet these same coaches did not tell them or teach them that there are certain responsibilities that come with being the stud athlete who is praised and admired for his athletic prowess. I'm talking about the resposibility everyone has of being a decent law abiding citizen.

I say that this young man has to have some redeeming qualities.............he just needs to be sent to his grandma or his great grandma or send him to somebody's grandma in the neighborhood and let her deal with him and beat that azz till she gets tired, take a break, have some dinner and then beat dat azz some more. If he still insist upon being a badazz, repeat the process until the message sinks in.

Let's not throw the baby out with the wash water.

Just one man's opinion.......please don't shoot the messenger

I think the main difference is that this happenned on campus... Their is a sign at the front of most schools (colleges and high schools) that weapons are not allowed on campus.

Scrawdog, I did not read all your response, but I somewhat have a feel where you coming from. I STILL say lock his butt up. If I had a child on campus and he did something like that around them, I would be furious right now. Rules are in place for a reason and when they are broken, people are expected to pay the price for them. This guy is headed down the wrong road and he has been given chances to straighten his head out. Maybe this what's needed.

I somewhat agree (dont think I would lock him up but I would put him on 3 years probation).... If he was allowed to stay in school and play basketball, The president would be getting ALOT of calls from concerned parents. They sent their kids to college and expect to be in a SAFE atmosphere... when you shoot a gun on campus, you are putting alot of EDUCATED folks lives in danger.

JSU's White appeals expulsion

Jackson State basketball player Charlie White is appealing his expulsion from campus, according to university officials.

JSU spokesman Anthony Dean said Larry Belton, the Associate Vice President of Student Life, has 48 hours to determine whether there are grounds to grant a hearing.

If he is denied, White will then have 24 hours to appeal to JSU President Dr. Ronald Mason. Mason would have the final decision.

White, 21, was expelled during a private hearing on Monday after being arrested by campus police on weapons charges Sept. 22.

He was charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner.

The first charge is the most serious, carrying up to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted. The latter charge carries three months in prison and a $500 fine.

White averaged 7.8 points and 3.2 rebounds for a Tigers' team that finished 15-17 last season. The likely starting point guard, White's expulsion comes just two weeks before preseason practice begins.

JSU's White feels punishment too severe

By David Brandt
[email protected]

Jackson State basketball player Charlie White is appealing his expulsion because he feels the punishment is too severe, according to JSU assistant coach Eric Strothers.

"He feels that being banned from the school forever is a little harsh," Strothers said. "He understood a punishment was in order, but he'd like to come back at some point to school and play basketball."

According to the JSU student handbook, the associate vice president of student affairs has 48 hours to review White's appeal. That period should run out sometime Friday afternoon.

White was expelled during a hearing earlier in the week that followed his Sept. 22 arrest by campus police on weapons charges. According to the police report, White allegedly fired four shots in the air close to Alexander Hall with a .380-caliber handgun.

JSU's White denied appeal

Jackson State basketball player Charlie White's request for an appeal on his expulsion from school was denied, said Anthony Dean, JSU's director of communications, on Monday.

The point guard's last option is an appeal to JSU President Ronald Mason. Mason's ruling is final.

Dean said White has 24 hours to file an appeal with Mason, and he did not know if White planned to appeal.

"All I know at this point is his first appeal was denied," Dean said.

White, 21, was expelled during a private hearing on Oct. 2 after being arrested by campus police on weapons charges Sept. 22.

According to a police report, the JSU department of public safety witnessed several fights during a dance on campus just after midnight.

During the fighting, White allegedly fired four shots into the air with a .380-caliber handgun in the parking lot of Alexander Hall.

He was charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner.

White averaged 7.8 points last season as a sophomore.

:shame: He brought all that on himself. It's a shame to see good talent go to waste like that. Hate to say it but I don't see him rebounding from this. His esteem will be low from this point and he may get into more trouble somewhere along the way. Seen this happen too many times.

I could have told him that it would be denied. Alot of the people that sit on the board really dont need to be there.

This kid sound like he is on drugs or an idiot or something. Why in the hell do he think his arse deserves not to be expel. This boy not only shot once but four shots in the air. Do he think that Mason is going let him stay his arse in school.

is he worth it? You get him for two years, hopes he meets the percentage requirement because he lost a semester right now....I'm still waiting for him to live up to the hype.....He was supposed to do what Trey Johnson is doing now

J-State denies White's appeal

Jackson State president Ronald Mason has denied the appeal of former Tigers basketball player Charlie White, the school announced late Thursday night.

The junior was suspended after a Sept. 22 on-campus shooting incident and subsequently expelled from school after a hearing on Oct. 2.

Mason said his decision Thursday was based on the seriousness of the violation.

"Expulsion is the appropriate action in this situation," Mason said in a statement released by the school.

White was charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manor.

White was a former star player at Provine and was named Mr. Basketball by The Clarion-Ledger in 2003.

"This is a very unfortunate incident," JSU basketball coach Tevester Anderson said in the news release. "Charlie is a very good person; however, we have to abide by university policies and procedures. I wish him the best in pursuing his educational and athletic goals."
