J-State denies White's appeal

Jackson State president Ronald Mason has denied the appeal of former Tigers basketball player Charlie White, the school announced late Thursday night.

The junior was suspended after a Sept. 22 on-campus shooting incident and subsequently expelled from school after a hearing on Oct. 2.

Mason said his decision Thursday was based on the seriousness of the violation.

"Expulsion is the appropriate action in this situation," Mason said in a statement released by the school.

White was charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manor.

White was a former star player at Provine and was named Mr. Basketball by The Clarion-Ledger in 2003.

"This is a very unfortunate incident," JSU basketball coach Tevester Anderson said in the news release. "Charlie is a very good person; however, we have to abide by university policies and procedures. I wish him the best in pursuing his educational and athletic goals."

I dont know if Tougaloo have certain standards that's higher than regular college institutions for student athletes. I know that they take pride in turning out doctors and such rather than athletes, so he may have to meet a higher criteria than those at J-State.

Exactly. My only thing I hope I dont have to hear about him in the near future getting some more serious trouble. It looks like that is where he is heading.

If Strib wants him in, he'll get in.

Tougaloo has also produced over half of all black attorneys in Miss. My wife, Tougaloo alum, likes to throw that in my face. It may be over 60%.

Yeah, I couldnt remember if they had a very good Criminal Justice Department or not. One of my relatives graduated from there in their School of Medicine.

Lemme clarify. Tougaloo's grads go on to law school, and make up over half of all black attorneys in the state. Don't want anyone to think they have a law school.

Don't think 60% is valid today. That research was done decades ago. If research was done today of the number of black attorneys who graudated from law school in the past twenty years, Tougaloo's 60% rate will be much lower and Jackson State's percentage will be higher. The reason Tougaloo produced most of Mississippi's attorneys and doctors in the 40's, 50's and 60's was because Jackson State was a teacher's college.

I remember reading an article where Jackson State graduates are accepted into Medical School at a higher rate than Tougaloo. Xavier of New Orleans was ranked first.

They don't. They have a great collaboration with Boston College and other top universities in the country. My wifes best friend graduated from Tougaloo with a BS and immediately went to med school through Tougaloo's program. She only went to med school for 4 years and now she's a medical doctor. Tougaloo have great collaborations just like JSU. JSU consisitently send more students to top universities throughout the country on full scholarship than Tougaloo. We just don't here about them. My wife is one of them and Miss. JSU from 2005 is another one. Miss. JSU got her BS and immediately went into the PhD program at Vanderbilt on full scholarship. Councilman Stokes daughter graduated 1 year early from JSU and she is currently at Harvard Law school on full scholarship. Both schools produce outstanding people. Its just that JSU does more in helping those that are less fortunate.......academically or financially. Jamila Alexander went to Harvard Law school and was working for one of the top law firms in Jackson. She quit the law firm to teach at underachieving Lanier High.....childhood dream. Her pay went from 100k to 40k. She really wants to make a difference in the community and sending the best teachers to the worse schools is a start. Not everyone who gets a degree is ignorant to whats really going on. We need more like her and my wife.
 
Oh and Tougaloo have to send several students to JSU to take classes they don't offer. Comparative Anatomy is one of the classes Tougaloo don't have.

On topic....White is a good kid and he will not make this mistake again. Most all have taken pistols in places they shouldn't have. He// it happens on military bases.

Our students have the opportunity to participate in Ivy League exchange programs at Brown University, Boston University and New York University. They also participate in Brown?s Early Intervention Program for medical school and numerous research programs that annually take them around the nation and world to study and explore their interests.

Not true. Tougaloo is a NAIA school, NAIA standards are lower than the NCAA. The past twenty years JSU has produced more attorneys and doctors than Tougaloo.

It might be hard for that kid to get into anybody's school. He got expelled from JSU. So he might be out of luck at most schools. Especially for the reason he got kicked out for.
