Jackson State coach Rick Comegy announced the Tigers have signed former Mississippi State quarterback Tray Rutland.

Rutland, a 6-foot-1, 221-pound sophomore, should be eligible to play at Jackson State immediately and could push incumbent starter Jimmy Oliver for playing time.

Rutland could not immediately be reached for comment. He threw for 151 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions last season at Mississippi State.

he was supposed to attend SU, popped up at GSU and now JSU....he figures Oliver was the easiest of three QBs to beat out and he's also a senior

I saw this guy play on Jefferson Pilot Sports or whatever it's called...He was thrown into the fire because both starters were injured. I believe he found out on a Tuesday that he would be starting against Auburn of all defenses, but the kid looked good in the first half...I remember the analyst praising his efforts against Auburn's defense. He's a player so don't let the stats fool you....That West Coast Offense in the SEC is terrible.

I watched the kid play, and from an athlete standpoint he is waaaaaaay.............better than Jimmy Oliver. Rutland is mobile (if he's healthy and has a VERY strong arm). The thing with Rutland is he isn't very accurate and it may take him a while to learn the offense, because he was a State 2 years and still seemed to just not get or understand the offense.

Co-sign. From what I saw he's a great athlete with a strong arm. But he's not accurate and has no touch. Certainly not an SEC caliber QB - Croom probably should've put him at another position.

Never kept up with State.... So not familiar with him @ All
But WELCOME to TIGER WORLD!

:flippy:

Dude was in the stand's Saturday having a ball.
I knew he was comming after I read the Sunday paper. :D

He knew he was not going to play at Mississippi State after he got injured in his FRESHMAN year.

They recruit QB's every year.
Croom got bout 30.
He needed everyone of them last year the way they were going down.

Good Player. Tore his knee up at the end of the season. So he may have to rehab for a while. Oliver should be safe. If JSU is smart they should seek a medical redshirt for him. Ms State may have to help with that. I know we did Michael Hayes like that. Then he could sit out this year and watch/rehab. Either way he has 3 years of eligibility left.

Sometimes ya'll just post to get shat started don't you.

You didn't realize that about tbf? Look at his signature. It says it all. LOL.

Rutland did inquire about SU. Don't know what happened there. Can't be mad at him for checking out other SWAC schools. He did the right thing and got with JSU. Comegy aint going no where for awhile, plus Oliver is a Sr. Surprised that he didn't choose AAMU being from the ATL and all.

He could prove to be a good back up and then a starter or like somebody said, medical redshirt and then a starter the following year.

I just don't have a lot of faith in any QB recruited by Croom. He's the worst recruiter in the SEC. The majority of his recruits are CUSA-Sunbelt conference caliber at best. Having said that, I'm excited about Rutland's athleticism in Woody's offense.
