Is Spears still at GSU?

If so, why? He should have been fired before he left the field Saturday nite.
It's a damn shame how under prepared that team was to play on Saturday nite.

He is destroying a great program. I hope that GSU doesn't wait till it's too late as JSU has done.

Hey Judson, you were so quick to fire AL Dennis. Looks like you still have some cleaning to do. Please hurry!!!!!

All I can say at this point is that I'm glad they didnt give him anything more than the interim tag. Initially, I thought they should have given him a couple years to evaluate him as a head coach. Thank goodness they didnt follow my train of thought. While I do appreciate the fact that he lost some players to injuries on the offensive side of the ball, he has bombed big time and that has a lot to do with a lack of improvement on the defensive side.

There is no way you bring back as many players on that side of the ball that have started or have had significant game experience like Grambling's front seven has and struggle so badly. In seven SWAC games last year the G-Men gave up 72 rushing yards per game. In seven games this year, they are giving up an average of 172 rushing yards a game. In turn, in seven SWAC games last year, they gave up an average of 17 ppg. They are giving up 30 ppg this year.

As I said before, I can understand the offense and its struggles. Afterall, you dont lose your top two receivers, one being pre-season all swac, and an all-american quarterback in a matter of two weeks and not miss a beat. That's a given. But there is no reason that the defense should struggle like that.

This is horrible what he is doing to our program. He has a very talented team, but there is put in situations so they can fail. It seems like every play Landers is on his back. I am tired of them saying we are young with a freshman quarterback. Even the fist game against Alcorn, both of our starting receivers where hurt, yet he continues to call passing plays. Then there is no variety to the offense, so it's predictable. It seems as if it?s either 4 wide outs on the field or 7 linemen. What do you think we are going to do in those formations? Some needs to start a website (firespears.com) like they did Ron Zook at Florida. Today they finally came to there senses and fired him. Let's not wait that long.

One must agree 100 % with all of you. I will not BASH Spears but I feel that he is not right for our program. I have seen this team on many occasions this season but saturday game was HORRIBLE.. Let's stop using excuses for some things we all know that some key players are out but that saturday's game against J State was SAAADDDDDDDDDD......... We gave them the game.......... :fart:

STC60 I meet you Saturday after the game. You beat me to the punch. You are right, this does not need to be discussed on a public forum.

Those who don't have a laundry mat at their house must use the public laundry mat................. Talk all you wish in private, i want everyone on TSPN to know my thoughts. Spears and Judson must GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tru2 and STC,

the situation is being played out in public. there is no dirty laundry being aired. if you were at the game, you saw how this team is not prepared. that's all coaching. JSU is arguably the worst team in the conference. To lose is one thing, but to look like you don't have a clue is another.

How many timeouts did GSU use in the first quarter because of confusion. How are you that confused at the beginning of a game. This is not the first time this has happened this season. If the players are confused on the field, it stems from a lack of preparation. And that's all coaching.

You've seen it for yourself!!!! It's ugly at GSU right now.
You've smelled it!!! It stinks.

Something needs to be done and quick!!!!

Come on out Eye Cons and discuss this, y'all had no problem telling everybody how talented y'all were, and how bad y'all were going to beat people when you were winning.

Tell us GSUpe do you still think Spears is the man? Mike Bigg is the SWAC still in trouble? How about winning the title every year of this decade?

There's nothing like good healthy conversation to pay back all of those people who bought those wolf tickets y'all have been selling.

Gramfan I hate to tell you, but your defense has sucked since 01, and the only reason why your rushing numbers looked so good last year, because your pass defense sucked so bad, and it showed everytime you played somebody who could throw.

Not smacking at all, but it's the truth. Spears inherited a team with a lot of deficiencies, it's just coming to light this season. GSU hasn't been able to run the ball effectively since Brad Hill flunked out, and there hasn't been a conserted effort to run the ball either.

The offensive line has been fat, and overweight for years now, and this team is built for the pass, that's the way they've been recruited, and no matter who comes in, he's going to have his work cut out for him, I don't know if it'll be James Bell drastic, but it will take at least 2 years to get this team to run the ball, because of the personnel you have now.

Again no smack, just an observation.

NICE

Pimpnbb, I was at the game and I was just as upset as the next fan about the way GSU played Saturday night. I can't say that the overall team is the problem. Someone compared this years defense to last years defense but at the same time, GSU defense has played well enough to keep them in the games.

GSU defense becomes a tired unit in the 2nd half games if you have followed GSU closely. GSU defense stayed on the field an awful lot, 6 turnovers will do that to any defense. GSU's defense gave up 13 point after the 1st qtr with JSU leading 19-0. Not to mention the GSU defensive stop before half time.

Now I could rip the offense a new one for you and point out everything they did wrong and co-sign everything that has been said. I will say this though, Spears is the head coach and will take the heat for whatever is wrong with the team because he is the leader. But at the same time how did the offense look under spears time as OC?

Serious question. How many Grambling games have you gone to since 2001? Let me guess . . . You saw them play in the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Bayou Classics and youre basing your opinions on what you saw in those games? The 2001 GSU defense pretty much shut the Jags down while the 2002 and 2003 defense didnt even come close to slowing them down. Therefore, in your mind, GSU's defense has sucked ever since.

We all know that the 2001 defense was a real good defensive unit and those that have followed haven't been AS good, but you could never get me to agree that the last two have sucked. In fact, the 2002 defense allowed fewer yards per game and had as many turnovers as the 2001 defense did and ofcourse helped Grambling to a third SWAC championship in as many years. Just because Southern was able to take advantage of Grambling's overlyaggressive man-to-man style defense, that does not equate to a team defense sucking. It was only one game and your coaching staff was better for that. That goes for 2003 as well. Not as good as 2001 or 2002 but still a decent defense.

Man, you are so off-base. Tell me. With the exception of only having one defensive back returning in 2004, what deficiencies did Spears inherit? None.

Let me break it down for you.

Offensively, he returned 10 of 11 starters. The entire O-Line was in place, and all of his skill players except Tramon Douglas returned. Right before the season, he lost two of his returning starters at WR and then ofcourse, Eugene at QB in the first game. I'll give him a pass on that except for that fact that he did not develop the running game. That was my knock on him before they gave him the head coaching job. He has a lust for throwing the football and gives up on running the ball too easily.

Defensively, as I said before, there is no excuse for what is going on. Basically, Grambling brought their front seven back. That should be their strength but instead its a weakness.

Dude don't get so defensive, as I said in my previous post just my observations. No I haven't went to a lot of Gram games, but I follow them just as close as the next man, ask some of your fellow Gramblingnites in your forum.

Your defense hasn't been good since 2001, period. I'm not impressed with your shutting down the PV's, & Valleys of the world. Last year, your defense got worked by Alcorn, worked by Alabama St, and definitely worked by SU. Anybody that could throw the ball did, and your defense could do nothing to stop it.

2002 not only did SU work them, but PV put up 20+ in the first half, thank God they ran out of gas. McNeese dropped 50 on them, Langston put up 30+, and so did Mo Brown. So don't get defenesive again dude, I'm just giving my observations. Your defense wasn't that good.

The deficiencies that are there, NO RUNNING GAME, you don't have the personnel, and you didn't recruit it. Your quarterback has been your leading rusher for the past 2 years. Nuff said.

An already weak secondary got weaker, your offensive line with the exception of your center is trash, the way Eugene was running for his life is all the evidence I'm giving you, and your front 7 was not as good as a lot of you Tigers give them credit for.

Lastly, I know you don't want to hear this, but you don't have anything resembling a defensive coaching staff. Hell you fired your new DC after the spring game.

I hope that's enough deficiencies for you.

NICE

Part of the problem is leadership. Some people just aren't cut out to be head coaches, plain and simple. Sometimes you have to go through the difficult times to figure out which direction you want to go. And as a head coach, if you don?t have anyone to really emulate when you were an assistant, you just don?t know. For some people, being a head coach is instinctive. And some are just not cut out for it. You can?t MAKE someone a head coach. You can give them the job, but they have to have SOME kind of ability to lead.

This ain?t the first school this has happened to and it certainly won?t be the last. I think it?s just hard to stomach because it IS Grambling. It?s happening to Florida, Nebraska and Notre Dame right now. Though ND hasn?t been as bad as folks expected, don?t think that the alumni don?t want Ty?s head on a platter. If he eeks out one or two more wins and goes to a bowl game, he might be able to keep his job. I saw this same thing happen when I worked at South Carolina. No, not a powerhouse fb school, but the point is you?re expected to at least LEAD your team even if you can?t win games. Brad Scott was head coach at SC in the mid 90s. Great guy, really really NICE, but he lacked the intensity it took to LEAD his team in the SEC. You HAVE to be on top of your game, even when you don?t have the talent. He was gone after four years. Right now Brad is an ASSISTANT at Clemson. South Carolina?s rival no less. Man had to pay the bills. He?ll probably never be head coach at a major DI-A school. Coastal Carolina, maybe, but not DI-A.

When you are hired to coach at an institution with a national following that has amassed the history that Grambling has, it?s VERY difficult to maintain the consistency that has been built up over the years. The expectations are too intense. And just because you don?t have a talented team doesn?t mean that you give up on them and you stop ?coaching? them. The only reason Croom beat Florida is because he has those players believing they can do anything. He supports them and he believes in them. AND THEY BELIEVE IN HIM. Lord knows he has the least talented teams in the SEC, but the relationship is one of mutual respect. If you respect your coach and his abilities, you?ll walk on hot coals for him. Croom is doing the very best he can with what he has.

My dad is just sick over how the program has gone down. As a former player, he feels helpless and I know he never thought it would get this bad.

I think right now Gram needs to finish the season with some dignity and then begin immediately for a NATIONAL search. I don?t mean bringing in somebody?s uncle who no one knows outside of the north Louisiana or someone?s next door neighbor who played one year under Eddie. I mean real, bona fide candidates who can bring in the recruits and restore some dignity.

I thought the time out after the long injury time out was cute. You know Spears showed that Bell is the smarter. I do think GSU will have a better showing next game...and I do belileve in GSU in naw. That is not because of my love for the lions. I have long since been a backer of GSU in the bayou.

Um Gram Fan,

GSU's defense had the luxury of a seriously depleted Southern team offensively and defensively in 2001 (that's the game where Richard came in for a few snaps after Troy Williams got his hip dislocated or something and Levy was on the bench hurt as well. Also, no Michael Hayes and we were down to our 100th running back). Now Randy Hymes went off on us, but it was almost a repeat of 1999.

But it will be, as Jafus would say, intriguing, to see what the GSU administration does with the Spears situation.
