A winning performance by Southern University wasn’t the only big moment at the 39th annual Bayou Classic in New Orleans. The event was the only HBCU Football Classic to see an increase in attendance from last year, making it the second largest Classic on the list.

The official attendance placed 45,980 at the game, and roughly half that at the Battle of the Bands and Greek Show.

“It is exciting to see the increase in attendance in all of our events this year,” said Dottie Belletto, President and CEO of New Orleans Convention Company, Inc. (NOCCI), the management firm of the Bayou Classic. “Our strategy for Bayou Classic is working with last year our focus on making Bayou Classic a family event that provides something for alumni, visitors and the community of New Orleans and this year focused on continued growth in attendance for all events that make up Bayou Classic weekend.”

The increase in attendance was also good news for the city of New Orleans. The Convention & Visitors Bureau shows that hotel occupancy was at roughly 93 percent. They project that the event brought 200,000 fans into the Crescent City.

This year’s Bayou Classic win for Southern University was its first since 2007. The team was lead by interim head coach Dawson Odums

Southern controlled play from start to finish in a convincing 40-17 victory over Grambling. The Jaguars bolted out to a 27-3 halftime lead and Grambling simply could not overcome it despite a spirited second half effort.

Leonard Tillery led the Jags' attack with 19 carries for 104 yards to help Southern clinch its first winning season since 2009. Wide receiver Lee Doss of St. Augustine was the game's Most Valuable Player with six receptions for 117 yards and three touchdowns. Doss went over the magical 1,000 yard receiving mark and now has 1,047 yards on the season.

Lol..man you aint never lying on that one...it's good to bring up the old greats, but dayum at every broadcast...I agree they could show some light on some previous good players...but I mean it's not like we have alot to talk about from these schools though...so I can see their reason for speaking on the old players alot and I see your view as well

I have no problems with the talking about the past. They do it for the big schools too, and more need to know about our schools' past. Our problem is that our present is not that great. With a better present, they may not talk about the past as much as they do now.

I look at the overall leadership and the conversation I have with several athletic leaders in this conference. And alot needs to be done to put us in a better situation. We can even look at on the field rankings we need to get better thats it. We arent the best in the FCS thats where I want this conference to be at one day not just in HBCU land.

A company dropping sponsorship for a football game happens all the time and for various reasons. Just so happens anything that is Bayou Classic related, especially anything negative, gets amplified in the media. Also, if 200,000 people come to any city, for any reason, then somebody is going to want to pay to have their name attached to it. If not State Farm there always will be somebody else . . . just saying

And what does any of that have to do with YOU, choosing a game with lower numbers and declining popularity, over one that's increasing in numbers and still having a huge economic impact, that should continue to be played?

Chrysler was the original corporate sponsor if memory serve me correctly. Why do you think they drop ( as you put it) the BC?

BTW I'm still waiting for proof, of those seven schools recruiting habits.

But despite the gray clouds, organizers see brighter days ahead. Consider that last year, despite the down year in attendance, Grambling and Southern were paid $1.32 million. Schools that compete in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision, where Grambling and Southern play, would gladly take that payday, no questions asked.

Southern Athletic Director William Broussard said the athletic department received about $425,000 of that, down from some of the good years, which netted more than $600,000, but still good money coming in. The rest of the money funded scholarships in the Southern University System Foundation and the Grambling Foundation.

And though State Farm is no longer the title sponsor, the Bayou Classic still has considerable corporate support. Coors Light, the Marines, Toyota as well as State Farm are major sponsors. The Classic has 16 additional supporting sponsors and eight community sponsors.

Several companies have expressed interest in sponsoring the Bayou Classic, Broussard said.

“While there’s a great deal of gratitude to State Farm for what they’ve done for us this many years, the exclusive agreement with them kept us from entering into negotiations with companies in a number of different categories who historically have expressed an interest in being involved with the Bayou Classic but could not,’’ Broussard said. “It’s a different sponsor but that brand (Bayou Classic) is so important to so many people across the country. So important that’s it’s played on a major television network and has such recognition that State Farm’s shift from it wasn’t about the brand being damaged. It was about State Farm wanting to make a different play in the market place.

“This is not a crisis, it’s an opportunity.’’

But you and BH thinks it's better to not have the game, and sell punnay in a fancy uniform at home and home games.

i am well connected to alot of HS recruits bro. do you want their cellphone number so you can call them and see. Just Saying. These kids ain't making this stuff up about these schools. i see it all the time. I been on recruiting trips and witness it as well.

Kids lie about their recruiting experiences all the time, especailly when it comes to HBCU's, unfortunately that's how many of us were raised.

If I had a dollar for every time one said that SU didn't recruit them, only to find out later that they didn't qualify, but walked on at a PWC, I'd be on the beach in Boca Raton or Brazil typing this shit.

Bluedog, some traditions can be kept but they would have to be manipulated and adjusted for today's time. If the Bayou Classic could move to another state for one year, why can it not move to an earlier date?

MONEY cannot buy Happiness. The SWAC must be willing to compete and tell OOC teams they are going to kick their ass.

For example, SU should call up McNeese, tell them the Jaguar Nation is coming to kick their ass, and then kick ass on the field.

I know in Mississippi, MS State is renewing its old rivalry with USM. I want the SWAC to renew those old school OOC HBCU games. SU vs. FAMU should be played every year. JSU vs. TN State is played yearly. My Alcorn Braves should play Howard every year. Just do right by people. They play at your place, you go play at their place. It creates fairness, competition, and fellowship among ALL HBCUs.

Real talk, I have been looking at this thread for about a week and have yet to see why you guys are arguing....the pettiness has distorted the REAL reason this thread was made, I would love to contribute to discussion if I knew what was going on.

That McNair teams only won one outright Championship from 1991-1994 and the team we have on campus now can surpass that quite easily? Yeah ok...my viewpoint were the McNair TEAMS. Pete Richardson teams had no won back to back because they were great TEAMS!!!

The team on campus hasn't sniffed a title, so to claim they can do it "quite easily" is a stretch.
