Gov. signs bill dissolving stadium commission


I smell a rat. I have never been in favor of this and you will see why. So they dissolve the commission and allow Jackson State to keep the profit without stadium rental. After a study to determine the stadium's fate, they will decide to tear it down and give the land to UMC. The bill also creates a special fund for profits generated by any event on stadium property. The state College Board would control the account, but proceeds would be earmarked for Jackson State. Those profits will be used to build Jackson State University an on-campus stadium. THERE'S ONLY ONE PROBLEM...THE STADIUM HASN'T TURNED A PROFIT IN YEARS. :uhoh: And the profits WILL NOT add up to the millions needed to build Jackson State the on-campus stadium they need. NICE TRICK and it appears it is going to work. :no:

I agree with you totally. Unless the JSU administration can substantially increase the revenues of the stadium, there will be little profit to be had.

In addition, people keep saying that JSU "won't have to pay the upkeep". Well, you had better believe that part of the costs that will be deducted will be for maintenance and upkeep.

There's definitely some pimping going on, but it looks like JSU is the ho.

The notion that it's good business for the state of Mississippi to tear down a 60,000-seat concrete horseshoe football stadium so that it can turn around and build a newer but smaller one some three miles away doesn't make any sense.

It never has made sense for the taxpayers at large.

Yet Jackson State University supporters have made that argument from both a moral and economic standpoint off and on since the early 1970s. In 1967, when JSU's Alumni Field was destroyed to make way for a new science building, the Tigers began calling Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium their home field.

JSU is the only football-playing university in Mississippi that does not have an on-campus football stadium.

The new law also abolishes the stadium commission in July 2008. DFA and Jackson State University would take over daily operations, including the leases. A consultant would evaluate the stadium's future use for $500,000, according to the bill.

$60M project near stadium OK'd

A $60 million private development near Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium is expected to move forward since Gov. Haley Barbour has approved a bill that would extend leases in that area.

Dude......................Go back and read the proposal.
The stadium don't have to turn a profit for JSU under this deal.

JSU is NOT going to paying for UPKEEP, UTILITIES, RENT, etc.

JSU WILL GET PROFITS from Concessions, Parking, Ticket sales, event's that are held there outside of JSU EVENTS, and businesses located there........Rent for the land they use.

The DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE is responsiable for the BILL's out of THEIR BUDGET......................And THEY HAVE A HUGE BUDGET and INCOME comming in from throughout the state.

I honestly beleive if they built JSU a stadium tomorrow at no cost to us, ya'll would still find something to complain about.

I don't believe that bruh GUD think some just don't understand what the hell is going on in MISS!!!!!! I just smell something fishy about this entire set up and yes before anyone says something smart it is my BUSINESS because we are all in the same conference . It is about time that J State gets a stadium hell everyone else has one.....
 
How does this affect the CCC. I am just realizing that if Alcorn or Valley want to use Memorial, they have to come through JSU. Also, the promoters from the CCC will have to play JSU (not Alcorn) for use of Memorial. :D

How will Alcorn feel about this??

God forbid though, if the game is moved to Lorman because of their ego.

Man........................Ain't no secret about what's going on.
Hell naw the STATE don't wanna build JSU a stadium but what choice do they have.

This is just a stop gap measure until they figure something out.
You honestly think this is going to go on for say 10 year's with JSU GETTING ALL the profit's while the STATE pay's all the bill's.

We are under no illusions about Memorial and the State know it.
They already tried to give us that place for $1.
Your eye's are not playing tricks.................I said $1.
We said hell no because of the mentioned reasons.

They have not even begun to address all the INTER-STRUCTUAL need's of that place.
If the state fixed EVERYTHING wrong with Memorial, reconfigured the seating to chair back like the proposal hinted at, the state could build JSU 2 stadiums for that cost.:lol:

And again.........................UMC ain't going away either.
They just putting off the obvious.

There is no way that land is goning to be turned over to JSU and out of STATE Hands.
That shat is worth a potential $500,000,000 in just land sales alone.
That don't coun't what the developement's would bring in.

AGAIN...................They already tried to give us that place for $1.
Not a chance.

TP, the politicians are not going to allow HBCUs to compete with PWCs (Profound Statement). Sports is a means of bringing people together. JSU has been a power house in BCF for a long time and has the potential to become a power at the D1A Level. You already know that if certain things come together like producing revenue and owning your own stadium this could be the start of something great in Mississippi. My take on this is that the Governor is telling your President that he does not have the ability to run JSU by again saying that someone else can do it better. Desegregation lawsuits only satisfy us in the short term, but the long term plan is what we should look at, because it takes away the things we thought we gained in the short term. People really have to pay attention to details and not be hoodwinked by some that look like us and those who do not look like us.

That one of the big reason's I said in an earlier post that the STATE DO NOT want to build us one.
Especially the size that is being discussed downtown.............40 or 45,000 seater.
But again................What choice do they have if Memorial bites the dust in 5 or 6 years due to pressure from UMC.

40 to 45,000 is what Ole Miss and Miss. State started with.
Now their shat has been expanded to 60,000 for Ms. State and 65,000 for Ole Miss.

We would have the 3rd largest ON CAMPUS Stadium in Mississippi if that happened.
USM would be #4 even with their planned expansion.:swink:
 
Politics and Polictical correctness are not one and the same!!! One must understand their power, oponents and their political clout in order to make hay in certain political environments. All the speculation of why this has been brokered the way it has is because some of us don't understand the game and by what rules the game is played. Sometime the quickest way from point A to point B is not a straight line. I would go into more details but I am afraid that not everyone on this board is truly a friend of JSU( this applies to JSU posters also). So remember sometimes you may have to detour to G to truly arrive at B!!! Just my 8 for today!!!!
