FCS Runner-Up (Towson State) Lost Money in the Playoffs

Four years ago, when the Towson football team won just one game all season and went 0-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association, the University would have traded anything for a few more wins.

Now that they have finished a season with 13 wins and a trip to the FCS National Championship game, they are realizing the financial cost of picking up those wins.

Most college football fans assume that the farther their team makes it in the season, the more money they’ll make. But for both FBS and FCS schools, making a playoff run or a trip to a bowl game, it’s usually about losing money. Between trips to Eastern Illinois and Eastern Washington for playoff games and to Frisco, Texas. for the National Championship game, Towson lost $50,000, according to Director of Athletics Tim Leonard.

But hey... it's worth it to lose money as long as you get the exposure (and this is coming from a bigger FCS school)...

Because of the financial losses for participating in the FCS and D2 playoffs many Bama State and Skegee fans are hoping for the return of Tuskegee to the historic Turkey Day Classic. Even though Skegee has release their 2014 schedule, they only have 10 games on it. This leads me to believe there's a chance the Hornets will play them this Thanksgiving.

And that’s before factoring in how much money the University spent on hosting Towson’s home playoff game against Fordham.

“It’s a very expensive proposition at this level. Fewer people are putting in bids to host [playoff games],†Leonard said.

Towson was required to host the Fordham game because they were seeded in the playoff bracket, while Fordham was not. However, if Towson had missed out on getting seeded in the playoffs, Leonard said the
department had already decided to decline to host the playoff game.

“The NCAA doesn’t necessarily reimburse you for hosting,†Leonard said. “Traveling was probably cheaper than if we would have hosted all the way through.†url]http://www.thetowerlight.com/2014/02/cover/comment-page-1/[/url]

Even this is not convincing to those who continually harp about the playoffs. The objective should be to make money, not seek some elusive (or non-existent)respect from those whose business model loses money.

Ok, they lost 50k.....lol sorry I'm not seeing the big deal here.

If the exposure many champion for on here about the playoffs isn't making money for a big school like Towson, it definitely would not be worth the while for most HBCU's. Montana (one of the big boys in FCS) has been on record saying that they lose money

The NCAA has a lot of people snookered. Big Pimping NCAA. Only the bottom b*****s get a decent payday and they are the ones who need it the least. Everybody else is losing their asses and greatful for the opportunity.

Also it states in the article the bowl teams lose money too. Even payouts from the SWAC Championship game isn't all that much either.

Well, the teams that play in the SWAC championship game net some type of profit from the game, do not have to take cross country trips to play a team in Montana, regardless of overall record, and have more attendance/exposure. $50,000 is a lot of money for a FCS team and institution. For example, JSU's recruiting budget was $50,000 last year. That's some money that would have to be made up from somewhere.

i don't support the playoffs AT ALL... but lets be honest here, that $50K is relative. What if they made $200K more at the gate this year than they did last year? What if the playoffs gave them some additional games to host to major sponsors that gave them more than $50K?

Again, I don't support the playoffs but that $50K is not something to use against their system.

For the playoffs ONLY if the money works. Currently it does not. So.... you play these schools in the regular season and kick their behind and then decline the playoff bids when they come your way unless the NCAA provides a guarantee or changes the financial structure of the event. Right now, most of our schools are too afraid to schedule out of conference, unless it's a HBCU or worse yet, a DII hbcu.

How many home games did Towson play??? The last 3 wereon the road. They can't make money on the road.

50k isn't a lot for any program, not even our Programs. And like someone said, we are not accounting for the increase in attendance they will have next year, the Extra school pride and Donors that will give a little extra, we not accounting for the extra T-shirts they will Sell or the extra concessions that will come from the boost in attendance.
Now How many extra tickets is Southern going to Sell from Winning the SWAC? How many New Shirts are they going to Sell?

Some big schools have problems even when they go to the big bowls. Also, the article mentions Central Florida, a school of over 59,000 students, that went to the Fiesta Bowl, a game that was a BCS bowl.

lets be honest, Southern in the National Championship would trump the SWAC championship.. thats 50k would have been accounted for in August

God I feel sorry for people like you. You actually feel so inferior you can't even use common sense to give your own (SCG) credit.

We didn't win anything last year but had a raise in attendance (Rank in the top ten in FCS and led all HBCU's)

So your rationale is our fans will buy more season tickets and paraphernalia for having a losing session vs winning a championship.

Jesus freaking Christ get some pride about yourself podnuh. :smh:
