How do you feel about your school participating in the FBS playoffs. Do you think it would favor the SWAC to participate in the FBS playoffs?

Note: Separated by Division due to choice limits.

Yes, but not at the expense of the Bayou Classic on its current play date. In a perfect scenario, the playoffs would start the week after the Thanksgiving weekend. I think a lot of those schools would be in favor of an off week to prepare and get well.

In it present form, NO. Hell, some folks over there are talking about the MEAC shouldn't have an auto-bid, think they would say the same about the SWAC. Atleast we still have 2 teams playing after the regular season. Waiting for an at large bid we might all be home after the Bayou Classic.

I feel ya in regard to the present format that gives the NCAA a huge percentage of the net proceeds. But apparently, there's some financial benefit to the teams participating...although I don't profess to know how they "cook" the attendance figures to allow them to do so. As far as the season being over after the Classic, I'm not so sure that is a bad thing. I realize that attendance was good for this year's SCG, but is it profitable and does it make money for the schools of the conference. In a "perfect scenario", it would really be cool if a contract with ESPN to cover all of the FCS playoff games would allow the NCAA to eliminate (or significantly reduce) the percentage of the net proceeds that the NCAA gets from the schools.

My concern is that our lack of participation might hurt us in overall (additional) exposure and consequently recruiting. Just my opinion, but I really think our non-participation is being used as part of the "negative" recruiting that other FCS are using to lure away potential student athletes.

The SCG is MEANINGLESS. It is simply a way the CONFERENCE is giving back, no paying, the city of Birmingham for its FREE OFFICE SPACE. 30K to 40K pack the city, spend money and go to the game for a championship that should have been determined at the end of the regular season. The past two years, the team with the best conference record (both from the West) went into the game and LOST to a team that they had already beaten in the regular season.

You want to raise the bar for the SWAC, scrap the things that are in the way of raising the bar. If I were a non-SWAC FCS recruiter and a recruit was considering a SWAC school, I sure would let that recruit KNOW he will NEVER be a national champion simply because the SWAC doesn't go to the playoffs.

I understand that the BC is a HUGE money maker for GSU/SU. I really don't know the answer to that because the BC success is larger dependent on that Thanksgiving day weekend. Move it from that day, then it is not the same BC. However, the SCG is still meaningless.

A LOT of people feel the 1-AA championship is meaningless. Read the 1-AA board...LOL

That would be so dumb. While that kid is in school maybe 2-3 schools will win it so I guess those should be his only choices and a national championship should be his ONLY reason.

I guess you could also argue that a child should not go to the MEAC, OVC, Southland ect....becasue history shows that the chance of them winning the national championship slim to none!! Tuskegee does not go to the playoffs but they shole whoop up on the teams that do. The MEAC has not benefitted from the playoffs either. I am still trying to understand why playing a competitive schedule is less important than the playoffs... :lmao:

The top tier teams shouldn't want to play you. Its a competitive game for YOU, not them. All you have proven is you are the BEST in the SWAC, which ain't JACK to them. Those teams (App State) are trying to schedule the BIG BOYS, not even MID-MAJORS! They ain't got time for no SWAC team to PULL DOWN their schedule POWER RATING.

UAPB played SIU and their fans and conference fans DROVE them about even putting UAPB on the schedule. After they beat the CRAP out of us, no one was IMPRESSED! In fact, they considered it a WASTE of TIME.

You need to go to the PLAYOFFS and make a name for yourself.

JSU just won the SWAC and in some polls there are 2 teams in the SWAC who are ranked HIGHER than JSU. That is how much RESPECT the SWAC gets.

Don't give me that ONLY ONE TEAM WILL WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Why go to the NFL if you are NOT going to play for the Patriots?
Why go to the NBA if you are NOT going to play for the Spurs?
Why go to the MBA if you are NOT going to play for the Yankees?
Why go to play D1A football if you are NOT going to play for Florida, LSU, or USC?

Man, that was WEAK and nothing but AMMO for other schools.

A competitive schedule for each team would be great. Stop scheduling NAIA and Div 2 games would be a great start.

I voted for the 3 non-BC teams to enter the playoffs, and for Southern and Grambling not to. Unless you can find a weekend to move the BC to, and then they can enter the playoffs too.

The Bayou Classic ain't moving.

I'm not in favor or moving it either, BUT just let JSU, Bama State, PVU etc make a successful playoff run and see if that tune doesn't fast change among GSU & SU fans. Then if my theory that playoff participation helps recruiting proves to be true (evidenced by GSU and SU no longer being perennial winners), you will see the BC changed to the weekend prior to Thanksgiving faster than fast.

That is a possibility.

Where is your data to support that theory. Jafus send help. :swink:

If you want to be technical, it isn't a theory but a hypothesis... that's why I preferenced it by using the words Then if . IF the other schools begin to participate and we (Gram/SU) do not and our win/loss record against those schools takes a negative turn, I feel reasonably sure that their recruiting benefited from participation in the playoffs. Just a theory (hypothesis).

When we played McNeese in 04, even though SU lost 19 players due to grades in the preseason, SU was much more talented than McNeese. We played Northwestern St 10 times and I will say they were more talented 1 time, the time we played them in Shreveport. It has more to do with scheme's and coaching than anything.

Depends on who makes the decisions..... All it takes is for the home team to schedule the game early and work out something with NBC or not televise it.. There are ways around it I'm sure. Never say never though. That date is holding us back though.....

Dude you sound like a fool. Lets see 5 million vs paying to play in the playoffs.

Georgia was the highest ranked team going into the SEC championship weekend, and Georgia wasn't even in the SEC championship game, so that statement can apply to other conferences as well.

What is the MBA?

Sperm,
We aren't losing recruits to SIU, it's the USMs, Ark St, ULM, ULL, La Tech, UAB, Troy St. and other mid-majors who don't have a snowballs chance in Miami of winning a national title or playing in a major bowl that are hurting us. Do you believe that their recruits sign-up thinking that they are gonna win a national title? The BC is a major plus for SU/GSU as far as IMAGE. HBCU football is a great product, refer to the classics, we need to do a better job of marketing and show more appreciation for all OUR fans (visitors/home).
ULM made a point of thanking both their fans and the GSU fans for setting a new attendance record.
