Lets look at the history of the playoffs. It was said by the Swac commisioner that the Swac gave up it's automatic bid to the playoffs and thats why there is no Swac schools in the playoffs.

CATMENDUE2 stated that the Swac did have one and they received it when they played Boise St in 78 or 79.

Well time for the history to be shown....

The D1AA playoffs officially stated in 1978 and it started with 4 teams.

1978 Playoffs
Semifinals
Florida A&M 15, Jackson State 10
Massachusetts 44, Nevada 21

Championship (Wichita Falls, TX)
Florida A&M 35, Massachusetts 28

In 1979 there was not a Swac team in the playoffs.
1980 was the year Grambling lost to Boise State.
In 1981 the playoffs was expanded to 8 teams and JSU lost to Boise St
1982 they expanded the playoffs again to 12 teams and JSU lost to Eastern Illinois
1983 there was no Swac team in the playoffs
1984 - 1990 there was a team in the playoffs and in 1986 they expanded to the current 16 team configuration
In 1991 the Swac again had no team in the playoffs
In 1992 Alcorn State represented the Swac
Again in 1993, the Swac had no team in the playoffs
1994 - 1997 the Swac did have a team participate.
1998 to the present, the Swac has not had a participant in the FCS pl;ayoffs.

Looking at all those years you can see that the Swac did not and never had a automatic qualifier for the playoffs.

Fiyah, I'm not saying you are incorrect, but your premise is flawed. When did I-AA start giving automatic bids, first??? Who was champ the years the SWAC didn't go to the playoffs??? Maybe they weren't eligible (Gram).

If you ask any old head at Grambling they will tell you the SWAC had an Autobid cuz like me we all remember receiving both at large and auto in the same season some years.

As you can see there was never 2 Swac teams in the playoffs in the same year since you stated that they received a At Large and Autobid in the same season.

Fiyah is incorrect. Here is the real playoff history. The SWAC received an automatic bid to the playoffs until 1986 when it was finally stripped of the bid because of an insufficient number of teams eligible for the playoffs. We had been stripped on violation years before, but 1986 was for good. Alabama State, Southern and Grambling refused to move their games costing the SWAC its automatic bid. Published on April 28, 1986, The Baton Rouge Advocate printed a story about it. The AP also followed up. The links at the bottom of this page will prove it. I am not paying to view the stories, but note the Lexington Herald Leader - NewsBank - Oct 16, 1984 on the first link that list the SWAC. I hope this puts to rest the automatic bid debate. We had one and we lost it and we all should know why now.

And it looks like a red beans-and-rice outlook for the future. Unless Alabama State changes its traditional Thanksgiving Day game with Tuskegee, or Southern and Grambling work out something with their traditional Bayou Classic date, the best the SWAC can hope for might be an at-large bid. Thanks BG, I guess I missed the other school when I clicked the link for those years and I stand corrected on that. But no where can I find that the Swac actually had a automatic bid.

Fiyah,

This thread is slowly becoming a sinking ship for you. I'd stop while I am ahead if I were you.

Well there is still nothing in the NCAA history that says anything about the autobids, these are stories written by newspaper people. They are not right all the time.

But it was started to get people to find the information and pass it on.

You are really reaching now.

I keep telling yall the AGS started that lie. The SWAC was a Chartered member of the 1 AA by-laws committee. There would be no 1AA if it wasn't for the SWAC and Doug Williams Heisman run. I actually remember SWAC leaders being upset that the Autobid was even being discussed, Jackson and Alcorn once played on Turkey Day weekend too and was madder than Grambling and Southern when it was taken away. Jackson threaten to leave the conference if the SWAC allow the NCAA to remove the bid but opted to change the date of CCC instead and continued to play in the playoffs(and they received at large bids)for several more years until the Conference was sanction for it own Championship.

Does the SWAC have an autobid today? That's all that really matters to me. I could give a fvck less about what happened 30 yrs ago yet alone 130 yrs ago unless it involves PV directly.

And we CERTAINLY know why the SWAC lost it's autobid and continues to be held headlocked by 3 schools (now 5). :| It's just pure dumbassery in motion and I'd love for us to bolt if we weren't co-creators of this c**n conference.

pick one, you just might set another record in a different conference, this time it won't take as long.:goodbad:

I'd rather lose to a quality opponent than stupidity in motion. :swink:

We're above this conference BG. lol We could be 0-120 and I'd still assert that (like I have all along). :wavey:

this is too easy, I'll apologize in advance.:D

So many years not so long ago you had plenty of non quality loses, now you're above this conference when you use to be buried underneath it. :lecture: Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes. And I don't have the patience or bandwidth to explain how the architect did that. When a squad w/ 15 partial scholarships can compete w/ your "champion," you suck. :| You suck much better than the greatest whore to ever grace the planet. :swink:

Merry Happy Kwanza or whatever you people celebrate. :wavey: lol

No its not, cuz the Southland aint never had but 6 or 7 teams and they get an autobid. NCAA is using an excuse that we allow them to keep using. A conference should decide its representative not the NCAA.

Then why is the SWAC a part of the NCAA CAT? :| If you're not going to abide by the governing body's by-laws, why be a part of it? It's their rule, isn't it?

I'm not advocating staying @ the FCS level either. :read: Watching the horrific SWAC play over the last 15+ years is sickening. (OOC) I really hate hearing how Tenn St, Sam Houston St, McNeese, Stephen F Austin, et al OWN the SWAC in various sports. :|

I am not saying dont abide by, I am saying why all rules don't fit all participants. Whats good for goose is good for the gander. There needs to be a law suit in my opinion.

So the SWAC got 2 at-large bid in 1989, yeah right and fat meat aint greasy and Popeye won't fight.
