Division 1 HBCUs Should Consider Dropping Football To Gain Basketball Glory

They may not have beaten Gonzaga, but without a football program and having more money go towards basketball (which is cheaper to maintain) is it possible Southern could have gotten in the tourney with a seed lower than 16?
If I don't pay my power bill, I can pay my cable bill.

If Southern didn't have a football team, does that mean they would have beat Gonzaga?

Of course not. I think it's very short sighted to suggest that we should forego who we are for a flash in the pan. I gave the example of MCC and TDC, but I'm sure ALL of us can name games/events that are important to us, to our schools. Sure we want to win at bball, but NOT at the expense that kendrick is suggesting. Sorry. Football is king for us.

You are right football is king...but to Southern played the #1 seed and played a great game. When was the last time any of our football team played a nationally ranked team and made a good fight?

We're almost near Easter and I need favor on my side now because of something I did at one of "those " clubs in Capitol Heights, MD (My DMV TSPNers know which one I'm talking about...the one across from Popeyes), I'll keep it short and quick....

Do WE attend basketball games as much as football games? I can plan for a Football Game. A Basketball Game is a different story.

why stop at basketball?

If Southern (or any other SWAC school), didn't have a football team, more money could go towards golf, and bowling and tennis

yeah, that's the ticket!

c'mon man. It's way too radical to suggest that we drop football in hopes that we do better in these other sports.

I am glad most of you don't own a business. After reading many of your ideas, I see why most businesses fold within the first two years.

We have a SPECIFIC brand, we have excitement at our games, we have a Russell Deal (that no one wants) and a Nike deal, we have Classic Rivalries, we have the BANDS, the majorettes, the food, the tailgating, all the things that make SWAC Football GREAT....

Hell 2010 Jackson State Southern had 50K in Jackson to see one of the best games in the SWAC to date...but no one got a chance to see it...

How has those things helped our conference? :read:

We have a leadership problem and poor marketing. Prime example, I pitched a idea for AAMU to kind of create a program to get the kids involved. It was to give two free tickets to the honor roll kids in the Huntsville area. It would then get the parents to bring them. You make your money on the back end from parking, concessions and now getting them to experience something on a HBCU college campus. It was laughed at and they said why would we give tickets away free. :shame: It grows your fan base. of course you will not get everyone to come back, but if you give 1000 away and gain 500 paying returning fans back you make your money back and grow your base. We don't see that because we are uppity and separate ourselves from the community.

SU has done a few thing like this. I think it was well-received. I would say give 1 ticket per honor-roll child and you get the parent to purchase their ticket in order to bring the kid. The Houston Rockets do something similar with some of the basketball clinics they run. They give 1 game ticket to the child and provide the parent an opportunity to purchase as well.

Oh, I hear ya. For the record, I'm not saying I am in favor of dropping football. I'm simply saying that I understand the logic behind it.

When I was in elementary school the Braves, the Hawks, the Falcons and GT did this. This is how I became a fan. My pops and I use to go to all these games. Thank fully it was before his mid life crisis's set in. :emlaugh:

Plus FGCU has a bigger budget than most HBCU's with just basketball. This attention will no doubt get a lot of applications and boost enrollment but like Gonzaga and Butler they have to do it over time to further boost their profile (schools like VCU and St. Mary's are heading to that level).

Would SU/GSU drop the BC and a national TV game in hopes of success in hoops? Same with other schools with their classics and football pageantry

How do other D1 programs manage those sports without football?

Through ALUMNI DONATIONS, that’s how.

Every HBCU grad or supporter loves to shift blame to the schools and the coaches when it comes to money for OUR programs. You can go to any given HBCU the reasons are always the same on why alumni don’t give money. It’s always “I don’t trust them.†However, in the last 30 years coaches and administrations at our schools have changed constantly. So are we saying black people as a whole lack good organizational skills and ethics? The only thing that has not changed is the Alumni “only buy tickets†mindset of supporting the school. And we will try not to buy tickets if we can get away with it.

Until our HBCU ALUMNI realize that you can’t depend on somebody else’s money to fund your athletic programs we will never be successful in anything at D1 or D2. We need to drop all of our programs to D3 with the other schools who don’t spend money. There are more schools at the D3 level than any other division, so it’s not like we will be the only ones. Most of our fans may not know or care what the difference is... and then still buy tickets.
Somebody might asked, how much have you gave. I can say nothing, but I just buy a ticket and shut the hell up as long as I get a game played in front of me.

That should have been a great idea. Especially if it was done for a game that half the stadium would be empty anyway. Should've been a no-brainer (unless yall at 80% capacity for every AAMU home game.....don't really know).

I ran a high school athletic department for a couple of years. Basketball was our best sport, and it made enough money to pay for itself with a little extra. Football was mediocre, but it paid for itself and ALL THE SPRING SPORTS!!!!!! Dropping football is a dumb idea. Shifting some of the money to basketball, or baseball, where we compete........I can see that.

And that is all this article is addressing. Some are trying to dismiss it as if it doesn't make sense, but the points made are valid.

How long has FGCU had a basketball team? Would one trade the three months of football, which includes tailgating, the games. bands, etc. for one fluke two weeks of glory that occurs maybe once every 20 years?

In exchange for $1.2 billion in free (international) publicity, increase in school merchandise sales and increase in student enrollment that will have a carry over effect for years to come? Yeah, I just might.

So FCGU is getting 1.2 billion dollars in basketball revenue for winning it's first two or three NCAA tournament games for the first time ever? If you don't mind, please show me the numbers. Oh me of little faith.

Huh??? Go back and read my previous posts in this thread. I didn't say anything about FGCU getting $1.2 billion in basketball revenue.

I wonder how much free pub SU received. Has to be in the millions. Just playing on CBS against a #1 seed is worth a few mil$ in publicity, but add trending on twitter for a good few hours during and after the game is worth a lot also.
