Southern University women's basketball coach Sandy Pugh paid the ultimate compliment to LSU's third-ranked team following the Lady Tigers' 107-39 thrashing of her team Tuesday night.
"Their athleticism is incredible,'' Pugh said. "Some of those kids on that team ... they could probably play for our men's team. They're so athletic, quick, jump well, strong. Very impressive.''

LSU (2-0) equaled the school's second-largest margin for victory with a dominant performance on both offense and defense -- shooting nearly 60 percent, while forcing Southern (2-1) into 34 turnovers, 23 from steals, before 4,600 fans in their home opener.

Gators ease by ASU

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Alabama State knew it was facing a daunting task Monday night against No. 14 Florida at the O'Connell Center. But even in an 87-60 defeat, head coach Lewis Jackson found reasons to praise his team.

"I think our guys played extremely hard," Jackson said after the loss that dropped his team to 1-5. "Of course, it's always hard when you have to play one of the top teams in the country.

"Our plan was to try and take away Florida's big guys and make them shoot from the perimeter. We were able to do that for a while, but their big guys dominated. But overall, I think we played hard and played decent defense."

Florida (6-0) never trailed, scoring the first 10 points and never looking back in front of an announced crowd of 9,281. But for most of the remainder of the game, the Hornets made the Gators work all night.

A&M not aggressive enough for coach in win over Jarvis Christian

Alabama A&M coach Vann Pettaway took it easy on his team following last week's season-opening loss to Stillman College. Don't expect that to happen again this week.

A&M downed Jarvis Christian 75-62 Saturday night at Elmore Gym, but the victory did little to please Pettaway.

Southern rides strong second half to victory

Coming off of a weeklong break, Southern University played the part of a team searching for its identity well Monday night -- for a half.
Displaying focus and intensity after halftime, Southern broke open a close game in the opening minutes of the second half and went on to post a 71-58 exhibition victory over Jarvis Christian College at Seymour Gymnasium.

The NAIA Bulldogs from Hawkins, Texas, were a welcome sight for Southern, which went 0-4 on a season-opening road trip that included nationally-ranked opponents Texas and LSU.

Another welcome sight for Southern will be the F.G. Clark Activity Center, which is still in the process of being readied for basketball after serving as a shelter following Hurricane Katrina. The Activity Center is expected to be ready when Southwestern Athletic Conference play begins in January.

FREE THROWS HUGE FOR ZEBRAS, COSTLY FOR FILLIES

By Erick Taylor/OF THE COMMERCIAL STAFF
Friday, December 2, 2005 10:39 PM CST

Pine Bluff again let a huge lead evaporate late, but thanks to clutch free-throw shooting from Johnathan Carroll, the Zebras were able to pick up their second victory of the season.

Carroll hit four straight free throws in the final 15 seconds and made a number of spectacular plays early to lead Pine Bluff to a 57-52 win over Little Rock McClellan Friday night at McFadden Gymnasium.

?We?re still learning how to win,? Pine Bluff head coach Ron Moragne said. ?Those free throws were huge for us towards the end of the game. We probably shot 85-90 percent from the line, and good teams make the free ones late.?

Free throws, though, were what kept the Fillies from overtaking McClellan in the girls? game.

Pine Bluff missed several free throws in the fourth quarter and subsequently dropped a 47-43 decision to the Lady Lions. University of Oklahoma signee Nyesha Stevenson scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in leading McClellan, offsetting an a gutsy outing from Pine Bluff senior Martisha Gauldin.

Carney, ninth-ranked Memphis wear down Jackson State

MEMPHIS ? Memphis coach John Calipari is constantly yelling "speed, speed, speed" to his team from the bench.

The ninth-ranked Tigers followed his orders and used a fast pace to beat Jackson State 97-70 Wednesday night.

"It's a big part of our game," forward Rodney Carney said. "If we didn't have any speed, we wouldn't win that many games. We try to press them and try to get them to play fast. That's the way we play. If we don't play real fast, I don't think we have much of a chance to win."

Carney scored 25 points and matched his career-high with six 3-pointers. Shawne Williams added 17 points for Memphis (5-1), which won its second straight after losing 70-67 to top-ranked Duke in the finals of the NIT Season Tip-Off tournament.

Kareem Cooper finished with 11 points. Darius Washington and Joey Dorsey scored 10 points each, and Dorsey grabbed 11 rebounds for Memphis.

read the fine print... no way you Comcast is offering all their channels for $59 when nationally cable rates are set to go up by 9% in the winter. Now your first 3 months may be $59. I have both comcast and Directv.... Comcast is MUCH more expensive and I just have digital cable with no premium channels.

Count finishes with 15, but Tigers fold fast before No. 3 Huskies

Associated Press

STORRS, CONN. - Three days after struggling to beat Army, Connecticut worked out all the kinks against Texas Southern, nearly setting a record in the process.

Rudy Gay had 22 points and Josh Boone dominated inside with 12 rebounds and six blocks to lead the third-ranked Huskies (6-0) to a 113-49 win Friday night.

The Huskies' point total was just three shy of the Gampel record, set in 2002 in a 116-78 win over in-state rival Sacred Heart.

"This game we really tried to work hard on our defense and work hard on getting to the offensive glass," Boone said. "We started to run a little bit more and it's one of the things we're going to have to do to be successful this year."

Boone finished with 17 points and anchored an inside game that outrebounded the Tigers 56-28 and outscored the visitors 46-18 in the paint. The Tigers (1-5) also had their hands full with Rashad Anderson on the perimeter. The senior sharpshooter had three of the Huskies' 10 3-pointers and finished with 20 points.
