Band Nalia and people outside the band?


Now I can see if someone was walking around with a Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma T-Shirt. But let's say for instance it's a "white out" day for the 1st homegame at Grambling...and students go to the bookstore and purchase GSU Tiger Marching Band t-shirts. I don't really have a problem with that. They're supporting their school and band. I was in the band and I kinda understand the mentality....but people always say "Hey...get me a couple of band t-shirts" I'm not going to be an asshole and say "You didn't march in the band so you can't wear one" Different strokes for different folks I guess...

I live in Dallas....I wear University of Texas gear. I dare anyone to confront me about it.

I follow what you are saying and I find it interesting. It is not something that I would have ever thought was a big deal. It is a band shirt on sale in the bookstore representing the university. Personally, I look at that shirt just as I would a football, baseball, or any other sport's shirt. The person is wearing the shirt to represent 1) the school and 2) the school's event (i.e., band, football, baseball, etc.) they are proud of.

As someone else said previously, I didn't realize it was looked at like a fraternity/sorority and that members of the band would take offense at somewhere wearing a shirt repping their band. :noidea: Had no idea, but now I know.

Gulllll, "L to the nawww"!!!!! TBJ, just over here being messy and you know this..... LOL! Hey, I ain't got nothing but respect for "The Jukes" and it was always like an un-written rule that you didn't go and get you a band sweat shirt or t-shirt.

Besides, I know/knew too many of those crazy/wild ARSE Jukes and wasn't nunna the NUKKA"S going to be jumping TBJ outside of Mayberry....... :saw:
 
I wouldn't expect anyone who didn't CRAB the band to understand, nor am I gonna waste my breath trying to make ya'll understand. :smh: Ridiculous as it may sound to some of you, we (present and former band members) have our reasons for feeling the way we do about non-members wearing our shirts, para, or whatever. It's a lot more to it than just playing an instrument and marching up and down the field, and honestly, I didn't truly understand it myself UNTIL I became MMH. So unless you've done it (regardless of which school), then you'll never understand. :tup:

Depending on WHO you run upon, it may not even be a big issue. If you get asked and you say you got it from a bookstore, it may not be a problem. It really just depends on what bandhead you run into. :lol: Personally, I wouldn't fight or have heated words with someone with a BOOM shirt on.... but ummmm, I know some folks from back in the day who would have.

maannnnnn say it! we couldn't even wear University paro(unless it was the shirts we bought for gameday under the unis) or Maroon until we crossed the band. they really have no clue how serious the game was.
 
that was the answer i was waiting on tbj.... i knew you wasnt that crazy. and they dont sell( at least not when i was there) band shirts in the bookstore. they used to have the little shirt with te drum major on it that said southern university marching band.....but they aint sellin no "S's" in that batch! we'd go steal em!:winkgrin:

200 + Nukka's goes into 40+ Nukka's (Baseball Team) as many times as they want to. Schyatt, Southern's Math even teaches you that............. :flamethro :nod:
 
*I didn't march, can't say let's play an instrument, etc* BUT alot of folks have said F they can go into the bookstore and BUY THE SHIRT that most people recognize as the band's OFFICIAL SHIRT...I.E. at the SU the "S" with the music note or at JSU THE Sonic Boom of the South they wear for parades, pep rallies, etc, then it MUST be ok for them to wear it in support of the program...

Besides Grambling, which I've seen for myself, at WHAT SWAC school can you go into the campus bookstore and get THAT SHIRT?

At SU if you have THAT shirt, you earned it, stole it, found it, etc...I LOVE the Jukebox, but I was GIVEN the No Limit Sweatshirt at a game by a director cause it was FREEZING and I still didn't put it on, cause I DIDN'T earn it. I wasn't up in the wee hours of the morning, in the heat with the Jukebox. So I don't have the right. If I want to support the band, there are other ways.

You went to SU right?a HBCU. Unless you hid up under a rock and never came out to see whats what on the yard; how could you not know the certain protocals dealing with things of this nature around campus. You mean to tell me that you never seen or observed someone who was crabbin the band? C'mon now! H ell if you got common sense, nobody shouldn have to tell you obvious things not to do. Just like I knew when I hit the yard on A&M campus, not to walk up on any of the Greeks stones and sit on they bench if I wasnt a member. Didn nobody tell me that.

Yall know/knew the deal, you just feel like being ssaholes today..dont'cha?! lol

we aint even gone start with the no limit sweater! that was like a whole other type of terrible for my crab class. after my class only fat dudes got em cause thats all that was left. my whole class got the last of the regular sizes and we payed the price for them. and steep price. let a class of 2000 crab catch somebody with that no limit junt on.....young joc need to be right behind them with the mic.....cause its goin down!:nod:

Nope, I didn't go to SU though I am aware of certain protocols, as you say. I've seen the band members at SU with their signature shirts and I've never seen them on sale in the bookstore. As Redd just indicated, you can't get those official "band" shirts in the bookstore so who would wanna wear those shirts? However, if it is shirt that is sold in the book store with the band name, I didn't see the problem. However, thanks to the conversation taking place, now I understand.

You shole is RIGHT...that shirt is packed away very far away...I felt honored that I was given it and a certain poster used to always threaten me with he was gonna find it and take it...he was a crab of 99. I actually plan to give it to him soon as I locate the box of memories from that year. I am sure he will appreciate it...he also has a bday coming up...hmmm

I wouldn't advise anyone to do it.

I know at Top Choice (SU band para supplier) you can't just walk in there and buy band gear if you are not a Jukebox member or ex Juke. I went in there and my boy Howard who owns the place had to tell them I was okay and they went to back to get the Alumni Juke shirts.

I remember when I was on the yard you would get tore from the frame if you wore a Jukebox shirt and you had not played in the band. Of course we were all male back then and I think the fear factor was at a different level than it is now. But I still would not advise it. I also think most folks who went to SU understand the Jukebox mentality and what it takes to get in the band and respect the rights and priveledges afforded to those who earned the right to wear the "S"

If you are a band booster then go by a shirt that says SU Band Booster/Supporter. But leave the real band shirts and regalia to the ones who earned it. Just my 2 cents.
