you hire an old bat, fire his two assistants mid-season, fail to recruit anyone, 2 Southern starters miss practice time after auto accident, some players got the Baton Rouge flu, the coach is on his last legs, man, just dump the program and let the women play twice

BTW, SU administrators must be making some back. Giving their kids 2000 Mercedes. Now I see where the renovation money goes.

Advocate sportswriter

The top two scorers for the Southern University men?s basketball team were involved in a car wreck Wednesday morning and have missed the last two practices.

Southern assistant coach Otis Hughley said junior forward Brian Johnson suffered a concussion, while junior point guard Victor Tarver had a contusion to his shooting wrist.

"They?ll be in practice (today)," Hughley said. "Hopefully, they?ll be able to play Saturday. We don?t know how much.

"Thank God, the kids are OK."

Tarver, 20, of 1680 O?Neal Lane, was driving a 2000 Mercedes east on Harding Boulevard about 10:10 a.m., Johnson, 21, who listed an Iowa address on police records, was with him, police spokeswoman Cpl. Mary Ann Godawa said.

As they got to the intersection with Scenic Highway, a 1996 Ford Ranger pulled into the intersection into Tarver?s path.

The Ranger, driven by 56-year-old Jeremy Frank of 9711 Breeden Drive, had been heading west on Harding and turning left to go south on Scenic, Godawa said.

Frank was second in line to turn left. He drove around the first car in line and pulled out in front of Tarver, Godawa said.

After Tarver?s car hit Frank?s Ranger, the Ranger hit a 1996 Ford Mustang driven by 22-year-old Brandie Johnson of 22070 Talbot Drive, Plaquemine, Godawa said.

No one required care by paramedics, Godawa said, and no tickets were issued.

Tarver, who has led Southern in scoring eight of the last nine games, averages 17.3 points and 5.6 assists per game. Johnson averages 12.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Southern Director of Sports Medicine Carl Williams said Thursday he had not seen either Tarver or Johnson and had not been able to evaluate their status for practicing or playing in games.

Southern (2-14, 2-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) hosts Alcorn State (9-6, 8-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

"Without them, we?ll miss experience and be down in numbers," Hughley said.

Besides the absence of Johnson and Tarver, Southern has also been without another starter, freshman guard Trayvean Scott, and a reserve, freshman guard Randall Anderson, for practices this week.

Scott, who averages 8.3 ppg, has a stomach virus. He tried to practice Thursday but left after only a few minutes. Anderson, averaging 2.6 ppg, is suffering from migraine headaches, Hughley said.

Head coach Ben Jobe did not attend practice Thursday in order to make a doctor?s appointment. Jobe was not available to comment.

Senior forward Deandre Bell, who sprained his right ankle late Monday night late in a 67-57 loss to Alabama State, returned to practice Wednesday. (The team did not practice Tuesday.)

With senior forward Torry Ingram in class for most of Thursday practice, Southern was down to seven players at one point.

And one of those was partial qualifier Darren Warren, who is ineligible to play in games.

"You see how hard these kids are working," said Hughley, who has participated in practice both days. With seven players, he served as the eighth to run four-on-four drills. And with eight, he served on both sides.

"Even with the numbers today in practice, if you see the effort put forth, you?d think they were running for a national championship," Hughley said. "The kids are not going to quit.

"And that?s just a reflection of coach Jobe?s quiet aggression, quiet experience. They believe in him. That?s why I?m here. I want to learn from the best, and so do they."

your keeping us laughing over here, glad the kids were not hurt but damn, that's enough drama for years,

On the serious note, thank God no one was injured! I hope they have a speedy recovery and get back on the court soon. This event might pull the team together!

Maybe I should start writing for one of those tabloids magazines and get my editor to allow me to cover black college sports. Then, I can mention bad things about Southern and I know I will have a fan base because ONE person will be sure to find it and post it here!

Maybe I should make a trip to the Houston Chronicle website .... but I probably would not find anything on a certain school!

Two kids get in a accident and you still can't stop the hate. Why do you hate Southern University so much? Just tell me. No tricks or jokes because I want to know. I couldn't hate Prairie View that much because I don't know or care about every little thing coming out of there. The only reason I would notice PV is if they were closing and that is simply because they are a HBCU and I don't want any of them to close no matter where my alligence is.

same reason you hate Grambling

plus since you all think your not supposed to lose in anything (especially to "lesser" HBCU's), the season your having now makes my day.

What? Colonel Flagg, DTJ, Seeing Spots, LaCumba, ByronW, JR, Jagster, Miami Jag (my homie) is this true? Say it ain't so, please tell me there's love in Da Boot!

Mamma Jag, Delores Spikes I know you raised your chillen better than this!!!!:D

ain't true

don't believe this clown, it ain't true. I love y'all man, didn't I just have dinner with you and the rest of the gram folks last week? ;)

Mike B,
I have love for GSU as a fellow HBCU that has made outstanding contributions to society. My only issue I have with GSU is when we play against each other. It is an intense rivalry, and I hate losing to GSU like any Jag would and love it when we win. But I don't sit and post every negative thing I can about them. What would be the point? We smack each other but it isn't as bad as PF. Hell without Grambling there would be no BC, or maybe no SWACPAGE if Kenn had not went there.;) PF/TBF has deep issues about SU. It isn't healthy. I worry about him sometimes. You would think he went to a school SU considered a rival. SMH@TBF/PF.

next chapter posted tonight

I read where Jobe was ran out of coaching in 1957-58

He then says this year's ASU team could be Whutney's best?

He's getting senile by the minute. Any SWAC buff knows the twam with larry Smith was Whitney's best. 1957? Man, give it up.

See, I knew you knew nothing about us. While it is true some SU followers hate Grambling due to a natural rivalry, which is totally different from your PV based hatred of Southern, I personally could never hate Grambling. There is too much history intertwined between these two great institutions for me to hate my North Louisiana brothers. Granted when we play, I want SU to beat the hell out of them, but your hatred of Southern seems to go away from when PV and the Jags meet.

Don't compare your hatred to the SU-Grambling series.

BTW, who told you we think we are NOT supposed to lose to "lesser" HBCU's as you call them? Are you considering yourself lesser because while it may true that I as a Southernite don't want to lose to you or anyone else, I understand that time and fate catches up with every team and people lose. Ask Alcorn after last week .....

Is there a psycologist in the house? PF needs a couple of hours ....

NO HBCU is above another. But according to a SU fan theirs is "supposed" to be the best for some reason.

Their so shady half the folks don't even know they have A&M attatched to it. SU hides that.

What HBCU alumnus doesn't stand up and defend their school being the best that exist? If nothing else, it simply black and/or HBCU pride. It has nothing to do with disrepect for another. I'm that way about SU with other HBCUs. I'm that way with any non-HBCU concerning HBCUs instead of their non-HBCU schools. In mix company, I brag on the positives of PV, TxSU, Tuskegee, Tougaloo, JSU, FAMU, NCA&T, etc... just as I do with SU. In HBCU company, I do my share standing up for the blue and gold as the others defend their school's greatness. PERIOD.

PEACE!!!

Yeah we hide it. It takes too long to say.:D

I bet PV sang every negro spiritual they could think of after that white man forced you to add his name to your school. What is it again??

Prairie View University of Texas A&M!:emlaugh:

Man yall let that white man steal your birth rights.

You know what, something is REALLY wrong with you!

If we are UNAWARE that we have A & M attached to our name and if we try to HIDE it then why does it appear PROMINENTLY in the following places: (this list is not definitive)

1. www.subr.edu (header and footer)
2. www.sualumi.org
3. www.sus.edu
4. T-Shirts, sweatshirts, clocks, blankets, watches, shirts, bookbags, keychains, on and on AD INFINITUM on paraphenalia and memorabilia
5. Diplomas

and unless you are completely blind while driving and/or riding, the entire WORLD cannot help but SEE it on the official, registered State of Louisiana license tags--Southern University and A & M College. Why would it be on the license tags if we "don't even know we have A & M attached"?

We are quite PROUD to me a land grant college and are very much aware of its meaning and significance.

So I guess you say since we don't write it completely out on EVERYTHING we don't know and we try to hide it huh? I guess Tennessee State is shame and they don't know they have A & I attached to there name either huh? And I am sure as hell you will not admit that Prairie View doesn't list the A & M on EVERYTHING too, huh? You know I know some GOOD folk who are proud graduates of Prairie View, including my uncle and cousin, so no way in hell can I blame your psychosis on the venerable institution.

GOTT DAYUM, gee whiz, you are one sick dude.

MUCH LOVE IN DA BOOT BABY!

I cheer for Grambling to BEAT everybody but SU because we are LOUISIANA first. But you know you Grams don't often return that love! I sit next to a Gram alum who has season book tickets in Mumford (married to a Jaguar) and he wears all Gram attire and attends EVERY game and cheers for WHOEVER Southern is playing! But that's him and I don't judge one for all.

Hey my best friend is a Gram alum (former Miss Grambling 1980-81) and a Delta!!!!!!!!! Now you know I had to overcome a lot to love her!:D

It's all good. Thanks for calling us out, although I know you were just being a SMART AZZ.;)

Dayum you Panther Fan! You almost had me going against my Louisiana Brethren. I had almost forgot that Flagg er BgJag and I had broked bread together a short while ago.

I apologize to my fellow Boot folk!

all the while keeping my hand on my knife...cuz I still don't trust these jags!

Man, ignorance will cause you to say or respond to things a wise man would simply walk away from....

And to have the comments coming from a Panther in negative mode about a Jaguar... Maybe if people would research who they are and who they represent, they would change who they spill their HATERADE on.

PEACE!!!

Seeing Spots, thanks for the research but next time save all that crap for the round table forum.

Rob T...You notice everyone who has A&M attached to their name has it on their uniforms excpet the country kids (UAPB - their an exception) and SU.

PVAMU
AAMU
FAMU

By SU not having it on their uniforms they want folks to think their some kind of super, ultra research institute or something.

But when it is time to claim Agriculture grant money from the govt., SU A&M is displayed more times than Michael Jackson got plastic colors

Then they act like their embarrassed to have agriculture. It is hidden way in the back of the campus behind a ravine and freshmen dorms. I did not know there was another entrance to the school until somone took me back there. It is right across from the Liquor Store.

WE ARE!!!

I did not know there was another entrance to the school until somone took me back there.

That's because you were not interested in SU for academic achievement. You only went because you were ashamed to be a part of the bands at TSU and PVU of Texas A&M College. I just found out that you were a reserve for two years, so you got pissed off at Doc and transferred to the charter school that lost it's birth rights to the white man.

Lord help when I make the trip to PVU of Texas A&M College this weekend. The last time I went to the TSU/PVU game at the baby dome, they only opened one door because "the man" only gave them enough money to purchase one set of medal detectors, so they refused to open the other doors. By the time I got in, it was half time. Of course both bands were horrible and I was forced to listen to a dj that knew no music other than screw. Hopefully things have gotten better, but if not, I will get there early so that I can at least get my money's worth of game time.

reserve? I did not know that. Must have been in my mind because my body was on the field.

Lord help when I make the trip to PVU of Texas A&M College this weekend.

Hmm, hanging out on our campus this weekend. I figure you will ride the bandwagon because you already know you won't see a crowd like this until football season season. This is bigger than the SU, GSU basketball game.

Man please.... THIS WILL BE NOTHING BUT A SOCIAL EVENT, JUST LIKE THE LABOR DAY CLASSIC!!

Only 2% of the fans there are actually interested in the game....

Must have been in my mind because my body was on the field.

I KNOW you were on the field. You were setting up the equipment along with the rest of the RESERVES. :emlaugh:

:lmao:

then why your coming? nothing but a campus full of undergrads and a few alumni.

sad, won't support your own hoops program but will support ours. Thanks for the donation :D

I support because I know that yall are in need. (DESPERATE NEED). However, I feel safer going to the games in 3rd Ward. Not because there's hardly anybody there, but at least they don't force you to walk through medal detectors.:D
