It SUCKS! The Dems dropped the ball on this one.

How does it suck?
No public option
No Co-op
No option to choose health care providers
No Medicad expansion.
What else?
As a Democrat, you can't do much when 5 or more members of your own caucus didn't want meaningful reform and the entire Republican caucus refused to even participate. Republicans were determined not to give Obama any support in this effort while several Democrats did everything in their power to limit this bill.
TOTAL Government control is the main purpose of this bill..
They ain't trying to help no one.. they said it was urgant...:retard:
It will still be MILLIONS with out care... If it was this urgent with all the power the democrats have... no way would the public option been left out...
It about these people master minding keeping theirselves in office and collecting ALL of those special perks and benefits off of OUR hard work...
I can't believe yall don't see this...
Public Option would be like Medicare/Medicaid....which are controlled by the government. The "purpose" of the public option was to try to force the PRIVATE companies (Blue Cross/Blue Shield, etc.) to lower their premiums which are way too high and out of control...technically not directly controlled by the government (but we all know there's double dipping).
With the Public Option if a person doens't want to purchase the Private options then yes...they would be forced to get a public option plan. Supposedly the government would offer supplemental "checks" to families/individuals that can't afford the premiums for the public option (something that is not offered right now) so they would still have health insurance. So basically if the public option premium is $100 and the family can only afford $50 of it...the govt. will cover the remaining $50.
This is my interpretation of what they were trying to "sell" us in the beginning. Of course...everything has changed 3/4/5 times...so I don't know exactly where we are anymore.
Regardless the Private health insurance industry is out of control and there needs to be reform/options.
I am very dissappointed in Congressional Dems b/c they dropped the ball big time. But as someone pointed out above...All Dems aren't the same and don't vote the same (unlike Republicans). My thing is...a rep should vote according to his/her constituents and their needs. If majority of his/her area has insurance, doing well off...taxes would skyrocket with the passing of the reform bill...then Yes that Rep should vote against the Bill. But that is not the case for most of the Congressmen both Dem and Repubs.
Hopefully everyone remember what their Congressman/Senator voted for when election time rolls around...I know I will. Mine voted FOR a public option

The bill is imperfect but it doesn't suck. There are some good things in this Bill. http://www.politico.com/static/PPM136_091221_managers_early_deliverables.html
But basically this imperfect bill was all the Democrats can get. They may have 60 votes in number but not in reality. This is the downside of having so many moderate - conservative Democrats in the caucus - a group many on this board identify with. You can't expect progressive legislation to come from a slow-moving Senate driven by moderates.
The bill sucks! Dems could have and "should have" gotten more.
I can't believe some of you WANT a public "option" that everyone will be FORCED on except for those who serve us in congress and the senate...

I expect the senate bill to improve some once the House has a chance to weigh in.
SUtrp, if total goverment control was the goal, we would've gone to a single payer system or at the very least a STRONG public option. Neither is in this Bill.
Many of those "left out" in the bill will be illegal immigrants.

How can ANY private company for profit compete against a government ran or coop (government funded) company.. Who don't have to make profits because they are paid off of tax dollars...which come from the American citizens?
The Clinton bill in 1994 was better. But it failed - in part because of the perception among some Dems that Clinton failed to include Congress in the drating process. President Obama tried to learn from that failed effort and let Congress take the lead on the bill. Problem is, he went too far the other way and you ended up with a muddled process. But in the end, we did get a Bill that has some things that activists have been trying to get passed for years. And we have a framework in place where you can go back and revisit the public option and other reforms on an individual basis after the 2010 elections.
See Fedex, UPS, and private schools.
That was a very very small part of it. It largely failed because of Newt Gingrich and his war on any and everything Clinton. If you read his book he talks about how the bill was not a bad deal but he was determined to kill it because Clinton had the never to put his wife in charge of it.
