I'm a Jacksonian and I know about Morris Brown' s Band. They
have the second largest HBCU Marching Band (FAMU has the largest). They have one of the sexiest and finest team in the
country, they are called "Bubblin Brown Sugar". One of their
Band Directors is a Jackson State Alumnus, his name is Blake Gaines.

OK Fiyah.......

Since you disagree with me, I'll try to clarify my point involving fans coming to games and not neccessarily coming to see the bands.

Several times each year, some promoter or somebody organizes a BOTB. They advertise on radio and word-of-mouth gets the word out. They even invite HBCU Bands to be special guests and all that. How come they never make any money? The attedance is always meager at best? The only BOTB that consistently makes money year after year, is the Bayou Classic. And that's mainly because Southern has a big band reputation and so does Grambling.....

But if MoBrown came to Jackson and we had 30,000 at the game...30,000 would cheer both bands at halftime. Now, if you had just MoBrown and the Boom come back and battle each other, on the Sunday following the game, and tickets were $1.00!!!!! You still wouldn't a 5,000 folks to show up....

Now I wil agree that Black College Football is more of an event, then just a football game. And bands do play a big part in it. But they never out-weigh the game. Never. You don't see the band battle making the evening news. You see the game......

Taylor.....

My disagree was with this statement....

scheduling always fills the needs and desires of the FOOTBALL TEAM

more than naught.... and what classics you've seen that don't make money (for the promoters) and fans arn't in the seats.

My argument was more of the game being a total package with the bands included not a exclusion of the football teams needs. Example of this is when PV didn't play football one year and GSU played some other school from the east coast(I think it was Elizabeth City St or something like that)fot the state fair classic, but the promoter had PV's band come do the halftime show because they knew that GSU vs PV's band was part of the total package that people wanted to see and the stadium was packed for the game.

You don't see the band battle making the evening news

You must have missed the PV-SU halftime from Beaumont a few years ago..... :D :D LOL

OK.....

But on average, the Bands don't make the Sports Report. But of course, when you have bands fighting each other, that'll make all the papers.

Southern and maybe FAMU are the only bands on the planet that can affect a JSU football fan, so it doesnt matter. Nobody in Jackson knows anything about the MoB band.

Here are the bands that can travel:

JSU (never a question about coming to Normal
SU (same)
AAMU
UAPB (same)
ALST

But the rest I have some doubt.

Blue Bengal,

You would know about MoB's band. Didn't you hang out in the ATL area alot. If you're over there and see them, you would know. But us folk in Jackson don't see MoB play. So we don't know nothing about the band.

MACHIAVELLI,

If you think that MoB's band would have a significant impact on JSU's attendance, then you would be the one that's clueless on this issue.

From a former bandsmen, and a football fanatic, I'll give you the total, unbiased, take on this situation........

WHEN THERE IS NO BAND (and/or an opposing band) AT AN HBCU GAME.......ATTENDANCE SUFFERS HORRENDOUSLY.

You may not like this........but it's the truth.

I'll agree with that.... But when there's no band show, and fans don't come, they weren't coming for the football game anyway. So I say "Let 'em stay at home".......

The only thing I have been saying on this tread has been this: The football game is the draw. The primary draw. The bands and the Miss Whatever Classic Pageant, and the President's Reception are all secondary........I'm not saying that the bandfs aren't important, because they are. I'm just saying that if you took away the bands and other 'extra' stuff, you'd still have a game, and people like me would show up. But if you took the game away, and just had a stadium with two bands and a couple of pageants and contests and stuff, the stands would be mostly empty. The game can survive without the band, but I doubt the band could survive without the football game......

And somebody asked whether there were any Classics that didn't make money? Well, I've got on for ya. The very first Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Classic was played in Jackson in 97 (I think). Jackson State and FAMU. And FAMU brought that army they call a band. The attendance at the game was low (less the 25,000), and the promoter (Walter Reed Enterprises) lost money.....And they hyped it up and everything (with commercials and claips of FAMU's band). Still not many people showed up. JSU won the game I believe, and Walter Reed lost money trying to move FAMU's 3rd Infantry.......

So you can lose money.......And obviously FAMU's band wasn't a big draw in Jackson.....then.......

THIS IS ACTUALLY A GOOD EXAMPLE. IN 1996, JSU PLAYED FAMU IN JACKSON BEFORE 38,000 FANS (NO CLASSIC). PEOPLE CAME BECAUSE FAMU WAS RANKED #1 AND JSU WASRANKED #2. THE MARCHING 100 DID NOT COME. JSU WON.

IN 1998, JSU PLAYED FAMU BEFORE ONLY 14,000 FANS IN JACKSON. JSU WAS 0-2. FAMU WAS FRESH OFF A 80-?? BEATDOWN TO NORFOLK STATE. THE JSU FANS WERE UPSET AT OUR TEAMS PERFORMACE AND DID NOT SHOW. THE MARCHING 100 CAME. FAMU WON. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE HERE IS THAT THE GAME WAS TELEVISED.

Thanks TigerPride.....

Thanks for clearing up the year and the outcome of the game. When you get older, your memory starts to.......uh........uh ruh........What was I talking about?:D

TP and Taylor-Made,

Damn good examples of how things are in Jackson. I don't know what people do in other places, but a band bringing in big crowds don't happen in Jackson. It's all about the football team and how they are performing. A better football team will draw more fans. But a scrub team with an excellent band won't draw flies to isht in Jacktown.

Mane, you dayum right!!!!!!!!!!

We got alot of nice-weather, team-better-be-good, Boom-better-be-Hot, Wavy Dave & the baby Tigers-better-be-there, it-better-not-rain-on-my-new-hairdo-and-mess-up-my-outfit(with my cute shoes) football fans in Jacktown.........:D

To tell you the truth, most of you are ignorant if you think the opposing band being there doesn't make a different in the attendance of the game. And not trying to take up for MBC, but just because YOU haven't heard anything about their band doesn't mean other people haven't. Hell some of the BOTB's outdraw SWAC games alone.

unknown,

To tell you the truth, when you attend a school that has a band like Bama State, knowing that the BOOM, Jukebox, Sounds of Dynamite or whatever other band is coming might be a big thing to y'all. But you are ignorant to how things work in Jackson. I don't know how things work in Montgomery or any other HBCU city, but in Jackson, MS, the Mighty Tigers are the main attraction. The BOOM is an attraction. I will admit that the BOOM draws fans. But ain't no damn opposing band gonna affect JSU's attendance significantly. And we don't know jack about MoB's band. Few people attend BOB's in Jackson compared to a football game. JSU doesn't play MoB in football. We don't know what we don't see. Plain and simple.

Texas Southern band comes to Jackson and rocks all the time. Always gets house in Jackson. But unless it's homecoming, it don't be the usual JSU crowd, because traditionally the TSU football team was garbage. We knew a top notch band was coming and it never helped the attendance.

IF THE FANS KNEW THAT THE BAND(S) WEREN'T COMING BEFORE HAND YOU WOULD SEE AN IMPACT. I TOLD YOU ALL BEFORE THAT THE REASON THAT THE 1ST SCG WAS CLOSE TO 50,000 WAS BECAUSE OF THE BAND EXTRAVAGANZA (12,000 TO 14,000 CAME FOR THE BANDS), YOU CAN FOOL YOURSELF INTO THINK OTHERWISE. B.O.T.B. ARE RECENT EVENT IN MISSISSIPPI, BUT IN PLACES LIKE ALABAMA, LOUISIANA, TENNESSEE AND GEORGIA THEY HAPPEN YEAR ROUND. SEEING THAT IT WOULD TAKE MORE TO MOVE A BAND THAN A FOOTBALL TEAM THE RISKS ARE GOING TO BE GREATER. PROMOTERS ARE TO BLAME FOR SOME OF THE PROMOTION OF THESE EVENTS AND THE OTHER IS EDUCATION. IF THE B.O.T.B. THAT THEY HAD IN JACKSON IN 2001 WERE TO GO ON FOR A COUPLE OF MORE YEARS IT WILL BE A VERY BIG EVENT, BUT DON'T COMPARE A FOOTBALL GAME THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR DECADES TO A B.O.T.B.'S THAT IS VERY NEW.

Sometimes I honestly think Robber doesn't even think before he says something. He acts like i'm speaking of ASU alone, which isn't the case at all. And more importantly, you act like i've never been to any of JSU's home games. Save that BS for someone else because I know what i'm talking about. Your airheaded responses don't ride with me. I bet you actually think that if JSU nor A&T's band had came to the game in the dome and the fans knew ahead of time the crowd would've been the same size too huh?

I agree with Robber....

MO B aint no nationally aclaimed band. They come to Huntsville every other year and the crowd would be the same if they came or if they didnt. GSU band never comes to Huntsville but that game is always one of the highest attended games of the year for AAMU. Most students/fans are not like most people on the swacpage. They dont know too much about bands and dont know if a visiting band is coming to the game or not. Yall keep talking about the SWAC championship game and the Peah Classic, Robber is talking about A HOME GAME. I know at AAMU a visiting band will not make the attendence or break the attendence. The Southern game would be a sellout even if the Jukebox didnt come to Huntsville. When you are at a JSU or SU, the other SWAC band is going to come to you every home game, so it is no big deal to their fans. But not too many bands go on away trips to GSU and ASU, so it may be a big thing to students and fans there.

The Fever is Spreading......

I see that the SWAC Page Sports Board has been infected with SWAC Band Fever. I knew it would get it...... The Band Talk just seems to creep into all discussions... And once it takes root, it's HARD to get it out........(like bad grass stains)

But I think the last post(before mine) was correct. JSU and SU seemingly have a luxury that no other SWAC school has. And that is, that opposing schools will bring their bands to JSU and SU, and not go other places.... If they had to decide which away games to go to, then they'd almost always decide to go to JSU and SU. And JSU and SU are pretty good about returning the favor. I know JSU's been to every SWAC school except PV in recent years. And I'm sure SU does their fair share of travelling too.

But dude hit the nail on the head about MoB. They're just not well-known in Jackson. And if we never play 'em, they'll still be unknown.

And....the comment about attendance not being greatly affected by the bands is fundamentally true. I'll take JSU and SU. The two teams have had the greatest football rivalry in the past 10-12 years(all scores were close, except in '90). All the games have been sellouts, and fans flock to Jackson and Baton Rouge (and N.O.) And I believe that the crowds would still be huge if the bands didn't show. But since there's virtually no chance of that happening anytime soon, it's a mute point(and we'll never know).

The JSU/SU game is the biggest 'Home and Home'(non-Classic) game in the SWAC. Probably in all of Black College Football.

And the best band battle is still the Sonic Boom of the South and the Human Jukebox.......Believe dat!!!!!!!:D

Dahill,

But I'm the airheaded one. Thank you for pointing out that I'm talking about a home game, whereas MACHIAVELLI refers to the SCG that brought every band in the conference to the game. If MoB came to Jackson, I don't think the Jukebox, Sounds of Dynamite, World Fame, Storm, Ocean, or the other bands would be there. What do you think??? unknown is just assuming his own argument, so he tries to put down anyone who thinks differently.

MACHIAVELLI,

You're comparing apples and steaks, bruh. The SCG with all the bands vs. a home game is not quite the same. Besides, I'm willing to bet that even had they not had that extravaganza, attendance wouldn't have been significantly lower. You do realize that was JSU vs. Southern, dontcha???

Unknown,

Son, you don't know me. So you need to keep your juvenile ass responses in check. You obviously think that bands make the football world go round. You, KID, are the one that does not think before you post. And whatever JSU fans went to the Peach State Classic, maybe on half of one percent went to see A&T's band. I can't speak for A&T fans, maybe they went to see the BOOM, and not their nationally ranked football team. I don't know. But like I said, AIN'T NO DAMN OPPOSING BAND GONNA AFFECT ATTENDANCE AT A JSU HOME GAME!!!

Just because you run to a game because of somebody's band, don't mean everyone else does. For a period, Grambling stopped bringing their band to Jackson and we knew they weren't coming. Had no affect on attendance. When your program has a history of winning, you don't need all the sideshows.

Attendance at JSU vs. MoB (MoB's band performing) (Not homecoming or 1st game of year) 17,000

Attendance at JSU vs. MoB (MoB's band no show) (Not homecoming or 1st game of year) 17,000

BLUEBENGAL

If you were trying to win over people for MoB band, you picked the wrong song. JSU's arrangement of Working would eat them alive.

Can't speak for anyone else, nor am I trying to belittle the tremendous work and effort that the bands put into the shows...it is truly a part of the HBCU football experience BUT, In all the years that I've gone to a football game I have NEVER based my attendance on whether or not a band is playing.

I'm sure there are many fans who's primary interest is in seeing the band. But most of those people are either former band members or family members of someone associated with the band. The original debate (I think) centered around the attendance at MOB vs JSU would be higher than NWSU vs JSU because of the band (MOB's). I agree with Robber. My interest would be in seeing JSU play NWST than it would be MOB. I think the overall football fan interest would swing this way also.

After this season AAMU Band is ranked #2 in the SWAC.

If you recall at the beginning of the season, we were ranked #3 in the SWAC.

In 2002, we should be ranked #1, but it is our goal to change uniforms.

Just for conversation, our President mentioned the well dressed and outfitted MOB Band at our last home coming. When Presidents get interested look out #1.

I have got to agree with Robber on this one. If JState does not put a good product on the football field Jacksonians will protest by not showing up. Like Southernites, Jacksonians are very astute football fans. The bands are great and significant, but they are simply lagniape (something extra) in certain venues. When expectations are high and a top notch football team is put on the field attendance will soar. Case and point would be Valley when the Toten/Rice show was peaking. Jacksonians did not come out to see Valley's band. But, the attendance was well over 60,000. Last year with a poor Valley product the crowed was easily less then 25,000. Also, I remember one year S.U. was in Jacktown playing in front of 60K fans and Jackson State played poorly. Jacksonians left out of the stadium in droves in the 3rd quarter. These people will not put up with a poor product on the football field. If the game is competitive which it has been most of the time, no one will leave their seat until the game has been decided.....Peace
