Terence Graves Calls Out "Celebrity" Coaching Hires

A Jag friend of mine sent me this video because he knows that I would appreciate Graves passionate position on hiring these outside NFL players. Forward to about 1:18:00 when the subject turns to Vick. No Coach speak here.

I don't understand why HBCU'S think that hiring ex NFL players who never cared about your schools & thought that these schools were beneath them are now the solution. Many ex NFL players have failed here already. It's insulting to these Coaches like Graves who gave their playing careers , plus decades here honing their craft coaching & we chase arrogant ex athletes because they have a bit of a profile.

I can't believe anyone is still considering Ed Reed when he showed his open contempt/ disrepect for HBCU'S.

Some good points were made, but times have changed. The change might be short lived though.

The NFL guys will have to win championships at some point. For now, the traditional way is winning the championships.

So far Eddie George, Eddie Robinson, Michael Vick and Desean Jackson represent something I thought was impossible in college ball. Hiring head coaches with no coaching experience is something that would have gotten a person ran out of town not too long ago. Times have changed

It's about getting attention. That is all it is.

In Delaware State's case it has been 17 years since they had a winning record. Desean can't do any worst than back to back one win seasons.

Athletes like Michael Vick who would never, ever dreamed of going to Hampton, Norfolk , etc.....( beneath them) are the problem with HBCU'S( talent drain) that have to mostly settle for really good kids who can't get P5 /G5 scholarships & then also compete with other pwi FCS schools. So these athletes now want to circle around & be a solution to a problem they helped to create by fleeing en masse to White schools as players.

Almost perverse.

The celebrity hires will continue. T Graves is one of my favorite coaches EVER. That’s saying a lot given that he is right up that with Coach Rob because I have had the privilege of actually being around him outside of football. Graves is speaking the truth and honestly yall know this started in basketball.

Here’s the thing. I get the argument he is making and we’ve all made that argument at one point in time, but this is NCAA D1 athletics. Who have our “home grown” coaches beat out of conference? Part of the issue has been they have not been fully supported by their administration and we see the results it’s gotten us. The other part of it is also that the coaches haven’t raised the bar high enough or set a standard than being HBCU-good. The normal status quo will not cut it anymore. The landscape of college football has changed vastly in just 5 years. We have to do a better job competing for talent, media deals, and funding. If the Coach Graves of the HBCU coaching world had consistently beat OOC FCS teams, he would have a valid point, but he hasn’t. However, if I can get more eyeballs, increased interest in my program, and increased fundraising to upgrade my facilities by hiring a celebrity coach… you damn right I’m gonna at least entertain a conversation. It’s a business deal at the end of the day. The school should be getting something out of rolling the dice on a name.

Black folks have always loved to be entertained…. Todays football aint yesterdays football …. NOT NAN of these kids playing for their school anymore …. They playing for a check. They will leave you soon as the final whistle blow to “move up” or get that check.

@Mr. SWAC , your post is a perfect example of there is two sides to every argument. I can see where Coach Graves is coming from. But, I can also see where you are coming from. It is a sticky situation.

Well, can you blame them. Lets put ourselves in their place, what would we do. Look, I'm just saying.

At some point we ALL must accept that this game that we all know and love has changed. It’s no longer about the name on the front, it’s about how much $ you putting in their checking acct. We must either play the game or get played. The celeb coach will bring NIL ops that an HBCU alum may or may not have access to. Don't dismiss these brothers bc they chose to take more money to play at a PWI bc we all probably would’ve made the same choice. We want these successful black men to give back to the community and this is one way they do it by bringing media attention and financial resources to HBCUs. I’m not a big fan of the celeb coach bc I know it’s not going to last long, but last I checked JSU is still benefiting from the PRIME years. Let’s give this a shot and lean in to it.

Again let's throw Deion out - he had help to win - what other exposure and cash these coaches have brought to the schools and we're talking about cold hard cash not comparable exposure- Tennessee State sure hasnt profited off Eddie George

I am not against brining in former NFL stars to coach at our HBCU’s. It’s not the answer to some HBCU’s, but it is an attention grabber for programs that haven’t had success for a long time.

Vick is a Virginia boy that’s taking a stab at a FCS Virginia program. I would rather see him take that gig over VMI. I want to see Delaware State with a splash/big name hire of Delaware. (A program that they have been tap dancing for since they signed that ridiculous deal with them after all of the decades of them not wanting to breathe the same air as the Hornets.)

Anyway, I wish any former NFL player luck if they take over a HBCU because I want that school to get all of the positive attention they can get at the FCS level. Will these guys move on? Yes. But so what at this point. This is a business. Coaches move from FCS to FBS on any given Saturday night. I wish all of them well.

That under the table bag was being dropped on those 18 year old kids back then. Boosters with money made the kids decision easy.

Campus visits with white girls as host and their party favors played a part also.

It doesn't make since to ignore how being on TV weekly was part of the package to.

Fast-forward, I think some HBCUs are looking at these moves from a short term gain perspective. It's just business for now, which is how HBCUs have been forced operate for the most part. Only time will tell if the NFL hires with no coaching experience are the right move.

Just speaking on wins and losses, it looks like Eddie George and Eddie Robinson are not doing bad at all. If Alabama State's QB situation hadn't got so dire they would have finished a lot better.

Agree! It may not work for some but it may be the solution for others.

This the problem with some of thinking at HBCUs in Athletics and Academics. A lot of folks think our schools have to hire its own instead of the best candidate for the situation. That's one of the reasons we are so awful against other top notch FCS teams. Also, some of these same HBCU coaches would take a higher paying PWI gig tomorrow if they were offered the chance.

Once again, it may work for some but not for others. I'm not saying Vick is a great coach by any means, but he may be what's best for NSU. We know they could not get it done with Odums, who is still one of the most winningest coaches in all of HBCUs. It's no secret that Deion turned around JSU and they are still benefitting from it.

It is simple, the previous coaches did not work out and thus they are electing to try something different.

If Graves and others don't like it, then they better beat them, when they play them, and bring in more attention and revenue than the ex-NFL players.

If am I the SWAC or MEAC media departments, I would play up these types of matches to generate attention for these games and build a story around the games where you have the old guard vs the new blood (only when these old guard coaches makes those types of statements in the media).

To me the schools that decide to hire ex-NFL players, they need to come into this with their eyes wide open (as most would not look at an HBCU if they had other options). Welcome them in as family returning home and treat them accoradingly (build that connection with them and even if things don't workout keep the relationship in good standing).

Some of those PWIs have some great black women there on their campus.

Right. The quicker we accept this and adjust to the times the better and get serious with this NIL thing. Might not can keep the best at the moment but I trust the Commissioner when he says he's helping schools out (I just don't trust our doofus president)

No one should be expecting the “Prime Effect” with these celebrity hires. Deion is his own media sphere. However, you can’t deny the bump that comes with hiring a high-profile celebrity coach. Ticket sales do increase, sponsorship opportunities increase, media exposure (free) increases, and certain spaces that were previously unavailable to you open up as well. Tennessee State has seen an increase in ticket sales. I’m not an alumnus but I’m sure if you ask one they’ll tell you that boosters and athletics donations have gone up as well. I was EXTREMELY critical of Eddie George’s hire because he had “0” experience, and it definitely looked like a fad. I think Eddie George was successful because he took the job seriously and really invested hisself to learn about TnSU and the plight of HBCUs. Now, he’s turned that program around and if he does leave TnSU for another coaching gig TnSU has benefited.

You can’t sit here and tell me that if AAMU hired Ray Lewis as our next HC we wouldn’t see an instant increase in ticket sales, alumni/boosters support, advertisements/sponsorship revenue, media coverage, student-athlete interests, and even access to certain rooms we weren’t previously invited in. The real question for the AD to decide is how serious and committed Ray Lewis is about coaching and leading our program?

Truth is if we hire Ray Lewis you will see a shyt load of black women and hell for that matter White women too at A&M home games. 😂 It will be more women who attended the school who ain't been to a football game since their Freshman year with right jeans and heels on. 😂 Don't be fooled this is a business decision.
