Terence Graves Calls Out "Celebrity" Coaching Hires

Again let's throw Deion out - he had help to win - what other exposure and cash these coaches have brought to the schools and we're talking about cold hard cash not comparable exposure- Tennessee State sure hasnt profited off Eddie George
Ex NFL star & Heisman winner Eddie George( who would never talked to an HBCU) is publicly begging fans to his attend games & had 1500-2500k people show up at his OVC championship . Yet celebrity worshippers still claim these people will magically bring " eyes" & "fans" " excitement" & " resources" ,etc..... TSU alumn Rod Reed did just as well & actually won a playoff game in season 4 & not a participation trophy like E.G.

Rod Reed was at TSU 11 seasons…. With losing seasons in his last 3…. Two 2 win seasons… thats why he was let go… Now in his defense the OVC was MUCH tougher then than now. Honestly believe TSU won a watered down conference this past season.

Anyway, I wish any former NFL player luck if they take over a HBCU because I want that school to get all of the positive attention they can get at the FCS level. Will these guys move on? Yes. But so what at this point. This is a business. Coaches move from FCS to FBS on any given Saturday night. I wish all of them well.
All of that positive attention Ed Reed brought to BCU & HBCU's! E.G. publicly chastising TSU fans & begging them to come to games & they still aren't showing up. Southern should just bring back the great Stump Mitchell since it worked out so well?

Rolling out the red carpet to random ex NFL players is not some panacea. Especially arrogant ones who think these schools are beneath them.

I'm not defending Rod Reed, but comparing his 1st 4-5 seasons to the celebrity ex NFL player who is supposed to come save us poor HBCU'S . Reed actually won a playoff game ,but E.G. has 2000 people showing up for championship games .
There are a few high profile athletes that I think could pull this off ,but just hiring random ex athletes ( who would not come to your school) is silly.

Evolve or get evolved. Every time these guys start complaining they prove that they are SCARED and haven't worked on themselves professionally. Not one legit athlete wants to play for no SCARED COACHES.

When was the last 9 win season at Tennessee State?

I am confident that Vick will succeed. He possesses the necessary name recognition to attract talented players. I anticipate that he will make astute decisions in hiring a top-tier offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. This has been a significant issue with many of our programs; we often have mediocre head coaches who recruit their friends for these critical positions, leading to disappointing performances against FCS programs.

If I'm a young Black coach in the swac or meac I'm looking to get the hell out of those conferences as soon as possible. No need wasting time toiling away hoping to one day move up to a HC position at one of these schools so some AD who has done a poor job can try to save his job with a splash hire.

I wouldn't blame them .Rob Jr. is the Dean of SWAC Head coaches with only 3 years experience so maybe some are already doing it. Larry Scott ( not an HBCU alum) of Howard turned down Alabama because he believed in HBCU's, likes being a HC & has the integrity not to chase every dollar waved at him. But is it worth it if I struggle a bit & Cam Newton is handed his position because he's famous?

The celebrity worship is absurd.

@JAGSC ….I don’t care either. I do not care to care to see a SWAC good runner up program that get the dog $@#& beat out of them at home against FCS program at high school day to boot. IMHO, that team didn’t look even as good as Odums runner up teams. He took the job and needs to figure it out.

Graves better get off these radio shows and fire the OC of his and start over on the Offensive side. I don't care what any other school is doing. Worry about your job.
Stump Mitchell is still coaching since I see many are star struck with NFL players who come slumming for jobs at schools they'd never attend.

Stump was in his own way. If he would have allowed someone else to call plays , he would have been really sucessful. He recruited an excellent roster. Odums won the championship with Stump players. Willie Quinn, Tillery, Dray Joesph , Etc

It's not all schools, some are still using the traditional route. PV, NCAT, SU and your school proved that. My TSU was doing the same until trustee and board members interfered.

I get your overall point though.

PV is a special case in my opinion because SWAC rarely hires a top 5 D2 head coach. Jackson just happened to be Black

Many in the SWAC knew who Jackson was because he played at my Texas Southern for two years and coached their from 2008 to 2011. He applied and interviewed for the job last year at my TSU. Many of us wanted him, but the A D. wanted McNair and the board had other ideas.

To be honest you are right. Add FAMU , Gram & SC State. it does appear SWAC schools especially are a bit wary after the Ed Reed debacle at BCU. We'll see with these last 2 hires at Valley & A&M. Respect to Graves for firing this shot though & defending loyal HBCU alums & coaches overall.

That under the table bag was being dropped on those 18 year old kids back then. Boosters with money made the kids decision easy.

Campus visits with white girls as host and their party favors played a part also.

It doesn't make since to ignore how being on TV weekly was part of the package to.
I made decisions at 18 too & there are lifelong consequences to some of those decisions as it should be. . They should go ask those boosters & those Snow bunny alums to help them get a job at the PWI'S they helped make billions for maybe? Black athletes are the problem with the extreme talent drain & Black flight. But you arrogantly come back & want to be the solution to a problem you're creating until you can get back next to your Folks & go "buck dancing" in Boulder or "Tap dancing" in Tallahassee .

Then the arrogance & entitlement of these types like Ed Reed that they come demanding jobs with little or 0 experience publicy lecture & trash HBCUs.

I get your point, but I lean more towards thinking they can't get hired if the school doesn't offer.

I think Vick will be aight. But that Desean Jackson hire made no sense at all. And, he has to recruit to Delaware against South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. Good luck with that.

Profound and correct.....they use us to advance so that they can be used against us again!!!

A bigger problem is that the hiring pattern applies to Presidents, Deans, Dept Heads,Foundation Board members. Then our schools wonder why Alums are so reluctant to give back. I still give back in spite of the slights I have received. Sometimes I wonder why.

They can't because some of those boosters and alum in most cases do NOT want a black coach.
Because you got kids (mainly parents) who do NOT want to play for a black coach nor high schools that want a black coach recruiting their kids.
Especially not one being the head coach.

Yes many of those players HELPED cause the issue of talent drain in HBCUS but we can not let HBCUS off the hook.
What is North Dakota doing to get kids in football? And then win like crazy? What is in North Dakota?
Who are they recruiting? How did they get 4 players from Texas?

And the main reason they probably come to HBCU-expectations. You don't come here to win the National title. You just put out a competitive product.
