Watching Southern vs. Holy Cross

SU was too good of a team with too good of a non conference record to lose to these lucky kids. Holy Cross was not a good team.

Move over Alcorn 2002, there is a new "most embarrassing play in game loss" on the all time NCAA list. 14-19 Holy Cross defeats the 22-11 SWAC Champ.

(The SWAC must stop complaining about playing in the play in game.)

Well, in reading the comments posted here and on Facebook, it seems that only a few are realizing the primary factor that made the difference in this game; and that was Southern's 3-point shooting. SU shot 39 percent from the field overall and a staggering 15 percent from the 3-point line. Let that sink in for a moment. They were 3-20 from the 3-point line and managed to lose by 4 points.

Folks love to use the "he got out-coached" line when the fact of the matter was that SU simply couldn't connect on its 3s. It really is as simple as that.

This game isn't a referendum or indictment on SWAC basketball lack of fundamental basketball in the conference, Southern or coach Banks.

Holy Cross didn't win a road game in conference play all season then went on to win their conference tournament, beating Lehigh and Bucknell -- two NCAA tournament teams -- on the road to the First Four. It just wasn't SU struggling against that squad. They've made several teams look bad over the last week or so.

Holy Cross is just hot right.
I agree.

But, if you saw the game, HC's 1-3-1 was extended past the 3 point line all night!!! SU didn't need to Jack up 20 3-pointers! The baseline was a desert!!!

I agree. And that out-coached angle really shouldn't be in place here. If you heard Banks' interview at halftime, he seemed to understand what they needed to do.

He said that out of his mouth, but when it came time to apply what was said, the players didn't do it.
If you knew the outside shots weren't working, why shoot 20 three pointers in the first place?
Banks motto should've been layup or bust.
su should've gotten at least 10 backdoor dunks or alleyoops if they would've attacked that slow 1-3-1 the entire game. su didn't attempt ONE alleyoop the entire game and that's how you beat that kind of zone.
He also allowed Holy Cross to dictate the pace when he should've forced the pace and the spacing was terrible. Three players above the free throw line the entire game? Even the female announcer mentioned that at halftime, but su came out the second half doing the same thing.

Well they went away from the 3 after the adjustment. The last 8 threes were not taken until they were in the final minute and a half trying to counter and most of them were wide open shots.

They took 7 3s in the first 10 minutes of the game.

And for what it is worth, SU's three-point shooting woes are documented in the SWAC championship game against Jackson State. They went 4-14 on that night.

Exactly!! All this talk about they simply didn't shoot well from behind the arc. But, what is the likelihood of shooting a good percentage when you have three defenders above the line all game? That's on the coach. You tell them kids they "bet not shoot another damn three, or y'all azz walking back to the bluff!" Don't we know coaches that would have done that? I know I do.

They went a stretch of the game from about 5 min left in the 1st half to close to the end of the game where they passed up a good 10-12 open looks from 3. Obviously he told them not to shoot them. Anytime #10 Prudhomme is passing up open 3s there is a directive to "NOT SHOOT 3s". LOL

It's no difference in football, Your team not in the championship, or post season, everybody else becomes EXPERTS, SMHH

The problem is we lack offense

Our offense is just fine. Tired legs vs jSU.

Who said anything about the JSU game? JSU played great defense. Couple that with out tendency to not be able to finish strong under the basket at times. We got to do better. Especially against an equally or more aggressive team.

Yep, they looked like they didn't know how to get the ball in there and it was opened all night.

Dude we lost to 7-22 PV twice this season.

SU was 2nd in the Swac in scoring. SU's legs were gone. Played 3 games at the Swac tournament, rode the bus home Sunday, flew out to Daytona Monday, played Wednesday. Holly Cross Finished their tournament last Wednesday.

Just like I have always been against not including all the teams in the tournament, for a long time, I have said the tourney needs to be moved up a week. To be honest, it's not like our teams our some world beaters anyway, and to have them going into the big dance immediately after an exhausting conference tourney makes it even tougher.
