Watching Southern vs. Holy Cross

Doesn't matter, we've played and beaten far better teams than Holy Cross. We just chose the worst possible time to revert back to our SWAC regular-season form of not executing consistently. Texas Southern, Jackson State, Bama State and Alcorn were all better teams than them, I just think the players and possibly coaches let the hype of Holy Cross' style get in their heads.

We say Banks can coach, but maybe we confuse winning games with good fundamental coaching. Something was exposed tonight. SU failed to make elementary adjustments, and it looked like they were not prepared to deal with the 1-3-1 when everyone knew that's what they were going to do ALL NIGHT. ijs

You have 1 day to prep for it after never seeing it all season. There were a few players that passed on good, open shots too. They were thinking too much. We also didn't get enough 2nd chance points either.

Team traveled on Monday. This isn't the 1st time in history that a team and/or coach had a bad game. You're going to see plenty of teams do it tomorrow and Friday.

Like I said, coaches and players will have bad games at times. I guess him and his staff thought that their plan would work with the players we have. Sometimes your gameplan doesn't work. We've all seen it happen, even with the elite schools. lol
 
After listening to the press conference, the players owned up to making those defensive mistakes(going under screens) that allowed Holy Cross those back-breaking 3s, and Coach Banks said that Holy Cross' 1-3-1 defense was unique because they rotate differently than how other teams usually do. The players also said that they didn't attack the gaps enough and when they did things opened up.

Because those teams would have attacked Holy Cross from the jump. Our team waited until Holy Cross got into a flow before trying to attack.

Unique??? C'mon, Banks. The baseline gaps were uninhabited the whole game. Plus, the offensive flow and ball movement was way too slow. You let a slow team play slow. Your fault. Not the kids.

He didn't blame the players, the players themselves said they didn't attack the gaps enough and that they made some defensive miscues going under screens that led to those 3s. Of course he knows what they could have and should have done differently. Every coach that loses a game thinks about that. Good news is our basketball program should be back on track now that we are post-season eligible.

Holy Cross ran the old Princeton Offense made famous by Pete Carril. It is designed to take away a team"s aggressiveness. If you over play they go back door and if you under play they shot the three.

The 1-3-1 to a certain degree took away the outside 3 from SU. On many occasions teams will trap out of the 1-3-1. However, Holy Cross played a simple 1-3-1 with emphasis on taking away the passing lanes and the 3 point shot by making SU throw the ball over the defense (throwing the ball away). When they realized that the weakness was the back end of the zone, SU made a comeback.

I for one do not think SU needed to shoot the 3 to win the game. Holy Cross never stopped SU down low nor in the short corner. When SU ran their basic set offense without rushing the shot, they scored. Coach Banks will use this as building block for the future. Go Jags!

True, but Holy Crap didn't show us that they could play fundamental ball as well. Did you see how terrible they looked when SU started pressing them? They coughed the ball up easily. WHY ON EARTH DID HE STOP? SU could have went on a 20 point run.

SU played like crap against a team that didn't have the depth chart or speed to beat them.

I guess I am shocked because I have a certain level of respect for SU when it comes to playing outside of the conference.

Everyone is prone to having a bad game.
 
This game isn't a referendum or indictment on SWAC basketball lack of fundamental basketball in the conference, Southern or coach Banks.

Holy Cross didn't win a road game in conference play all season then went on to win their conference tournament, beating Lehigh and Bucknell -- two NCAA tournament teams -- on the road to the First Four. It just wasn't SU struggling against that squad. They've made several teams look bad over the last week or so.

Holy Cross is just hot right.

I'm a purist & was taught correctly where I'm now teaching understudies likewise.

Defensively, Southern played good enough to win. You held them to 59 points. Also, free throws were not that big of an issue. 14-19 for Holy Cross vs 8-11 vs Southern so Southern didn't have a problem making them.

Banks seemed a bit gun shy the majority of the game. Honestly, Southern should have beat them by double digits. Those 9 made threes were crucial though.
