Comparing McNair to other black quarterbacks

They talk about SWAC defenses back in the day as if they were the best in the nation. Bruce fat azz was shredding defenses left and right.

Linebackers and DLineman use to have a hand time tackling Bruce. I really don't think Bruce ever worked out.

Comparing McNair to other black quarterbacks
I apologize, my bad, I think I'm commenting in the wrong thread.
I thought when I saw the thread's heading, that I would be commenting on comparing the SWAC produced great Alcorn St. product Steve McNair to other great major PWC "black" quarterbacks playing abilities.

But it should be tilted "Let's "DUMP" on the SWAC AGAIN" thread.
It's like "ANYBODY COULD HAVE DONE IT BECAUSE IT WAS THE SWAC" syndrome.
I don't care what Michael Vick, Vince Young, Robert Griffin, Donovan McNabb , Cam Newton or any PWC "black QB" would have done at a SWAC school, because they didn't choose one.
So I'm not going to degrade or devalue the great Steve "Air" McNair's SWAC accomplishments by saying that any of the above quarterbacks could have had his same numbers just because it was the "SWAC" as some people say on this thread.
I don't need to celebrate the PWC products Michael Vick or Charlie Ward by awarding them honorary SWAC record holder awards for what ifs.
I am proud of Steve & Fred McNair, Doug Williams, Wille Toten, James Harris, Eric Randle(not his brother Marcus LSU), and the many more ALL SWAC QB's I left out including the present crop of QB's from the upcoming 2015/16 season.

Yall are saying those guys couldn't read defenses but you are talking about NFL defenses. They did pretty well against what some folks consider some of the greatest college teams ever assembled.

Running read option isn't the same as reading coverage 7 deep zone or man. Read option plays forces defenses to run zero coverage (no deep safety). That is the easiest defense to pass against when not disguised

He didn't play during the Mcnair era

Most schools are not running cover zero even with so many schools running read option. And VY, Vick and RG3 didn't solely run read option. Watch their college games. VY probably ran more QB draws from the spread than read option plays when he ran.

I'm aware, of that but read option is their base and everything else is run off that. Same thing the Seahawks run today

UT put in zone read for Vince as he had nothing on McNair's arm strength

Look at the wobbly passes he throws compared to McNair which makes me believe he would not be as successful if he did not have s complete team around

Look, we're taking about Mike Vick, Vince Young and McNabb, right? All of them finished in the top 3 in Heisman voting during their college careers. Those guys would have been successful whether they played at a BCS school, in the SWAC or on the moon. Randy Moss, an elite Division 1 player, played in the FCS and dominated the competition. Why would it be so hard to believe these QBs wouldn't have fared similarly?

Steve McNair had a better career in the NFL than anyone of those QBs maybe except McNabb but Steve was way better than McNabb in my opinion. So I would say those QBs would have been tested every game in the SWAC back then. People are not giving that era in the SWAC enough credit. GSU, JSU, SU and Alcorn were damn good at that time. The raw talent and coaching was better then. Vick would run wild in the SWAC but it was cats that didn't get recognition who could have caught up to him. McNair had better mechanics than all of this QBs except McNabb depending on what type of play was called

I agree, so what's the point of the Thread??????
We are doing the same thing we accuse the white man of which is Racial Profiling & Stereotyping.
What the hell is a "other black quarterback"
Why are we trying to place those players in the SWAC?????
They had a chance for me to celebrate them but since they didn't come I could give a "CARE" about them.
Each one of these quarterbacks had special skills that made them a perfect fit for the offenses they ran, including Steve McNair at Alcorn St.
Compare Steve McNair's accomplishments on the same level (NFL) as those mentioned above and there in lies your answer relatively speaking.
Steve McNair's mental ability, pocket survival instincts, arm strength and running ability allowed him to do some things in the SWAC that even the above average QB's at the PWC couldn't do.
He took those survival instincts with him to the pros where, unlike some of the QB's mentioned he had a good NFL career.

How would those QBs been tested? No Shade but you do know Valley was Valley and PV was on a losing streak back then and etc. this stuff is laughable.

If those guys in the SWAC could catch up to Steve McNair what makes you think they couldn't catch Young, McNabb and Vick? Also McNair was a better QB than any of them in my opinion even in the NFL.

Bruce came along way after McNair. Mac saw way better defenses than Bruce did. We are comparing the time when MAC played. Not the 2000s. Hell if Mac had played in the SWAC during the 2000s, he would have had even bigger numbers. LOL.

Exactly. I am not understanding these folks logic. No one said those guys would not be good. But if they had come along at the same time frame as McNair, they would have taken the same hits he did. Folks are concentrating on what SWAC defenses have looked like the last 15 years. We are talking 20 something years ago. The SWAC still had NFL talent on their rosters then.

Folks are also taking away how those guys had other talent on their teams to help them be who they were at their schools. Wasn't like they played 1 on 11. LOL. If Vick had went to PV in the early 90s, he would have gotten broken the fugg up. Sure he would have ran past a lot of folks. But he also would have been exposed to playing with players no where near as talented as Va Tech. Same goes for VY if he had went to PV or TxSU back then. Texas had plenty of talent with VY there.

Who caught McNair in the SWAC? LOL Not many folks did when he broke into the open field. Same with Young and Vick in their conferences. McNabb wasn't as much of a runner.

The NFL comparison is moot since we're talking about what they could have done in COLLEGE... in the SWAC in the early 90s. They all would have dominated EASILY, whether primarily through the air like McNair or combined passing and throwing like the other guys.

People selling the SWAC play of the early 90s way too short. Either they didn't watch or just clueless.

Yep. And we didn't say those guys wouldn't have been stars. Just that if they played in the same era as Mac, they would experience the same stuff he did. Depending on what school they were at in the SWAC, it may have been even more difficult for them to be what they accomplished on those FBS teams. I am willing to swap the comparison and say how great McNair would have been playing at UT during VY's era or Va Tech during Vick's run. Neither QB would have started if Mac was their team mate. LOL. Va Tech probably beats Florida State because Mac was a better passer.

Gram and SU caught him for their wins so to speak. LOL. We at least limited him. I don't think folks are saying those guys would not be good. But I sure would liked to see if Vick could have been a one man show playing on that PV team in the 90s. Now if he was at Grambling, SU, or JSU at the time, then that is different.

Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb had good QB mechanics. Look at how they dropped back in the pocket even in college. The rest were not good at throwing the football they just had speed and luck lol. Vick had an arm but he was inaccurate. Vince Young with them side arm throws mane stop it hahah. You guys would fit right in at ESPN because you're clueless about SWAC history and the talent it had. Them dudes were fast look at Coby Jones from Alcorn he probably was faster than Vick but nobody knew him because of where he went to school

I remember in 94(soul bowl) when McNair was up for heisman. He scrambled towards the goal line and got rocked by 2 guys from JSU. I think Alcorn went to the playoffs that year and McNair was injured. Of course highlights are going to show him eluding people but he got caught a lot of times. I was 2 rows behind Charles S Dutton milk dud head lol. Memorial stadium was packed and hyped we sat on the visitors side if I'm not mistaken. Great times!

I thought we were just replacing McNair with those guys on Alcorn? PV didn't offer scholarships so heck naw we wouldn't even use them as a comparison. LOL

SU nor Gram "caught" McNair...LOL We just scored more. But I thought he was speaking of speed and catching him from behind.

Is that really getting caught or just not eluding tacklers? How do you get caught if the guy is in front of you?
