Comparing McNair to other black quarterbacks

Easily, if you give him those same stud WRs and ground game to keep those LBers/SS honest.

Cannot coach speed and decision making. CW had BOTH, along w/ several others noted here.

I agree about C Ward. He would have done well in the SWAC. Especially in SU's offense back then. Mark Orlando (FSU grad) ran the same offense Ward played in at FSU with E Randall during that time.

I actually think Mac would have done well at any level. He was really a 5* player that we got lucky to signed. It really help that his brother was already at Alcorn.
It wasn't really luck....technology killed Black College Sports. When a kid from the backwoods of MS can upload his tape to Hudl.com and have offers pouring in from across the country, it's hard for him to stay under the radar. That was how we got a lot of our players. Now we just have to settle for athletes, just like they settle for the SWAC & MEAC, by and large.

Yeah. You just have to hope you can get a diamond in the rough every now and then (an occasional 2-3 star athlete who either slipped through the cracks, undersized or probably can play their position immediately in the SWAC as compared to changing at a FIU/Arkansas State/USA)

I don't think so. McNair took some serious hits. SU damned near cracked his ribs in 93 in our win in BR. He kept coming back in the game. He had to sit out most of the game against Valley the next week and they had to bring him in the game and he lead them to victory. Vick would have been injured in the SWAC. He wouldn't have had Va Tech OL protecting him. He would have been electric no doubt. But I doubt he would have put up McNair like numbers. McNair was literally tossing mofos off of him.

I'm pretty sure Vick or Vince Young with Alcorn's players surrounding him (all things the same) wouldn't have survived that 93 game (maybe McNabb he's a tough cookie). When I think of that game, even though we won think of McNair in amazement and certainly as a legend. I seen so many hats laid on that man viciously that night until it was unreal. That S.U.'s Sean Wallace was the first Honey Badger if you ask me. That is one of the best games I've seen (and I have seen a lot). S.U.'s 93 defense was something else. That was Pete's first year. We opened up in the Superdome that year against NWST. Coming away from that game, I knew we had something special. I still have the highlights of that year on VHS....lol

Steve Mcnair was the best QB I've ever seen. Better than Young, Vick, McNabb, etc. The numbers McNair put up back in the mid-90s must be put into context. That was an era where QBs were either one thing or the other. You didn't have QBs throw for 4000 and rush for 1000 back then. You didn't have the spread option and other offenses designed to take advantage of a double threat QB. Steve McNair did what he did on broken plays, scrambles, all with the greatest degree of difficulty possible. He finished 3rd in the Heisman vote....from the SWAC!!! Think about that for a moment....and ask yourself when's the next time that will happen.

exactly, people forget that McNair did most of his damage through the "Air". He never even rushed for 1000 yds in a season. McNair could read defenses fairly well for a college QB. He was a pocket passer that could scramble i.e John Elway, Steve Young type.

Those guys mention in the OP (other than NFL McNabb) couldn't and still can't read defenses...which is why they rely on read option offense to take guys out of the 2ndary.

To put this into context, McNair was the 1st black QB to get drafted in the top 3. 2nd Black QB to win NFL MVP (hasn't been one since despite the black QB's advances in the NFL). McNair wasn't a 'typical black QB'

Those guys would have dominated the SWAC but they wouldn't have put up his passing numbers. Charlie Ward & maybe McNabb could have done what McNair did

Black College Sports is NOT DEAD!

Yea I think people make the mistake of thinking the early 90s SWAC compared to the 2010 SWAC. The SWAC had Defensive players ends and linebackers drafted yearly during McNair time. People forget that a Ole Miss and Miss State would try their chances vs the SWAC then. They wouldn't even play Southern Miss who was the best School in the State in that Time. With Alcorn and Jackson State following them.

Yall are saying those guys couldn't read defenses but you are talking about NFL defenses. They did pretty well against what some folks consider some of the greatest college teams ever assembled.

John Thierry went in the 1st round to the Chicago Bears that same McNair draft & he was a defensive player for Alcorn

Thank you. Vince Young set records against that NFL loaded USC team with Pete Carroll as head coach. Vick damn near beat that NFL loaded Florida State squad by himself. These guys are talking about SWAC defenses like they were loaded with NFL first round talent. I'm sitting here shaking my damn head.

McNair had FBS, NFL offensive talent around him...he had Torrance Small, Marcus Hinton and even a young Donald Driver...lol...he had massive linemen also like a Chad Slaughter and on defense they had a 1st round draft pick in Thierry

McNair was built better than those guys and was probably coached up better in some instances as he didn't have zone read...VY struggled to throw so who knows how good would he really be week in and week out as he excels when he has a complete and talented team around him.....playing for run-first Jeff Fisher proved that...Vick might've fared as well....

McNair was a better athlete bar none

LOL if Bruce Engene could dominate the Swac, VY,Vick, RG3 and etc would of broke all types of records. I cant believe the stuff I am reading. hahaha

"SWAC" fans at their best. *smh* Highly illogical and embroiled in history. They speak 20+ yr history as if it occurred 07/14/2015. :D :D :D lmao

They talk about SWAC defenses back in the day as if they were the best in the nation. Bruce fat azz was shredding defenses left and right.
