Nah, I doubt that. But I do think if marketed right, you can sell Houston over Bham. But our fans would never pack Reliant. If it was at BBVA Compass then I think the crowd would be really nice looking in that place. What Reliant does is eliminate weather being an issue. But the city of Houston is definitely a better place entertainment wise than B-ham. Now Get Ready can come and not have to leave the same day. LOL.

To me, New Orleans would be the best central spot and Jackson next. But we all know those places are not going to happen for different reasons. Maybe JSU will have their domed stadium by then and it would be available. I got a feeling the SWAC office is moving to Houston as well. They must have gotten some major sponsorship to move from FREE B-ham. Toyota was the sponsor of the SCG. Maybe they will become a sponsor for the basketball tourney since their name is already on the Rockets arena. Houston is rolling hard now economically. Texas is taking stuff from everybody. The Gov been stealing companies to move from other states to Texas. LOL.

I think New Orleans would have been a good venue as well. I know the state high school championship games are played around that time as well as Saints games. Hell they could have had it at Tulane's new football stadium when completed.

N.O. is the best location right now with a SWAC following AND something to do for everyone. If Jackson can continue to revitalize its downtown and JSU builds the dome, I would say Jackson then. Until then since Houston > B'Ham, I'll take it.

I went to Houston the last time S.U. played and rented a car. I had no problem getting around or with traffic. My GPS took me everywhere I needed to go. :emlaugh: I don't see it radically different from driving in the ATL.

Once I get within MARTA range I Park my car, and swipe my breeze card. I don't have the patience for 55 mph creep into downtown atl.

I'm not sure where you drive in ATL. but driving 55 mph will get you ran off of the road most days (unless of course it's rush hour traffic). :emlaugh: I don't take MARTA unless I know the traffic is going to be congested somewhere and the parking astronomical.

I said this in a thread a year or so ago.... Gone ahead and move city to city.. Nuttin to lose... Hell you aint breaking the bank in b-ham.. The SCG was made for SU, JSU, Gram, AAMU and ALState... Those are the schools that will travel anywhere...

When I fly back in forth, or am sent to atl with my job I'm always near downtown and the airport. My mother and brother both own properties there so I find myself in Lithonia, stone Mountain, and Smyrna alot to. I'm so over I 20.

Exclude Gram, AAMU and ASU off that list and you have a point. Plus UAPB has brought people to the SCG both times, numbers say otherwise for ASU, AAMU and GSU.

Man you know you can over exaggerate about that Baseball tourny in BR and full to the brim when Southern lose it does not remind full so quit it...and the only people tailgating is you and your group...the only part you got right was that you all continue to tailgate after your team loses!

But it is okay for the Texas teams to have to do so to that raggedy Birmingham ...and what return twice in a season your fans don't travel to Houston during the regular season game...now I am really
Even when SU wasnt playing he attendence was > than any other SWAC baseball tournament. And im not talking the fudged attendence the SWAC makes up. Im talking bodies in the seats. You have no idea, because you left the tournament after TSU lost.

I remember going to Bama State in 2004 and that Crampton Bowl was packed. Bama State does show up sometimes when Southern comes to town (but for the most part, I agree with you).

My 2 cents.....I think they picked Houston because houston might have offered a much better deal compared the rest......Look at the U of H situation out of all the Major Venues in Houston "Reliant"had the best deal.....that says something

I love new orleans....Would like to see the game in the boot...but u have to think...how much did the super dome want? What did they offer? How much would the average Hotel Rates be?

Jackson....It's cool when SU plays JSU BUT nahhhh....just not appealing just like birmingham hell.....if thats the case...you could see how much Tiger Stadium in BR wants...Ya know KIP is down for trying to bring in big events to BR

The SWAC Championships should be about the game. If you tailgate you dont have time to do anything else. If you want to go out, Jackson has some alright spots. I always have fun.

I can see why you say ASU, still too inconsistent for me though.

Re: Football Championship Game- I think it has the potential to do well if we can market the game to an expanded fanbase. The Texas Bowl that is played in Reliant draws well. I think there are football fans out there that we come to see the game. We all know if SU is in the game that helps attendance. I feel if JSU, PV, or TSU (not eligible until 2015) would not do badly.

Re: Basketball Tourney- Attendance for the day games will be about the same as people are at work; however, I think the championship game will draw well. Now if PV vs. TSU is in the championship game then look out.....regular season the TSU vs PV game at TSU drew over 8,000.

Well, I was at the SCG in 2010 to see my Tigers but since the game is in Houston for the next 3 years I will be there no matter who plays.

This is different than regular season, as you cant count on students, because they have to pay for tickets. I think they should give students discounted tickets. Maybe $5.

I came to Houston back when we played txsu back in 2011. There were some pros and cons. There's alot more to do. I stayed at the Sheraton near the Galleria, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was the host hotel (a major supporter) of txsu/SWAC football. I ended up going out after the game because a friend of mine owns an establishment. Using my gps was a nightmare because of construction. That next day , after we checked out, we were on 10 heading back across in the rain and there was an 18 car pile up. Simply put, if you can't drive, then don't drive in Houston. If you don't like traffic, don't drive in Houston, and if you don't have an idea of where you're going, then DON'T DRIVE IN HOUSTON!!! I am relieved to hear that there is now a light rail service because that's all I can remember thinking last time I was there is this place is too big to not have a train. As far as the HORNET NATION, we're up and coming, not fully mobilized. I don't see us showing up in droves, but if we increase the number of ISTAP busses and find a way to decrease the price then maybe.

I get around Houston really well, but I have been going to Houston atleast once a year since I was a toodler as SU played there every year. GPS takes you exactly where you need to go, but I usually dont need it. Houston is a big circle lol. Just takes awhile to get around it.

When has AAMU and Bama St traveled lol. You cant count Gram into that also.

I wouldn't recommend driving around it. :emlaugh: Houston call it the loop and ATL call it the perimeter. Same ish different town. :emlaugh:

So basically it's going to go from being a ghost town in Legion Field to a ghost town in Reliant. Imagine a Grambling vs Bama State championship game....in Texas.

Actually I think the Grambling folks in Houston and Dallas would be there. Plenty of Gram alums in Texas and it is a short ride for the Louisiana living Gram alums. SU alums in Houston would come out to support the Gram people. Hell some of them are related or married to Gram alums. LOL. I think just the Bama Schools will have the most heartburn with this. It is easier to fly into Houston than B-ham. Houston has two airports to fly into. I would imagine all the West schools are happy with the move. The Ms Schools it probably is a wash. I know Jackson is only a 6-7.5 hour drive depending on how you drive. LOL. On Southwest it is barely an hour flight and probably cheaper than driving with the gas prices. We will see how it transpires.

Let's just be real, that game is gonna be just like it was in Bham. Everybody is claiming "im gonna buy a ticket and go whether my team is in it or not" now just like folks did when it was in Bham knowing they lying they azz off lol. Folks will go based on WHO is playing in it. If it's Grambling and Valley the attendance is still gonna suck. If it's Grambling and Bama State or A&M the attendance is still gonna suck. Most likely the attendance will be ANY better than it was in Bham is if it's JSU or Southern in it. I honestly don't even see big numbers for TSU or PV in it if they make it even if it's in Texas. I think 30K is going to be the cap for the game pretty much regardless.

It will be > if SU is in it. A winning SU brings a crowd.

I just don't get this fascination with Jackson. I'm sorry but that town does nothing for me. Like tbf said, when it comes to flights and hotels Houston wins....especially considering its proximity to SWAC alumni bases (and the fact that the stadium is weather proof helps)

Most people can drive to Jackson. You won't need flights. That is the major difference. I will have to fly regardless.

However, I do believe that Houston should have these games. It is the largest SWAC city and the weather should be nice. While Jackson would be the best central location, I like the idea of it being in Houston. The only problem now is that you lose the Atlanta Market but hopefully, there are enough SWAC alums within driving distance to Houston to make up the difference. Atlanta empties out for SCG.
