Can you at least compare it from the standpoint that both groups are/were fighting for civil rights, acceptance and equality?

Ok Kendrick, yes they are to some degree. But for the most part they can live pretty normally and they were able to much faster than we are. Our people still have a much deeper struggle than they do unless they are also black. Sorry man, I am a product of Civil Rights marchers in Mississippi and unlike some folks, my parents didn't run off to the North to escape. They stayed and fought the battle and I am product of those turbulent 60s and know all too well what happened to some of my people during the time. So forgive me for not having as much sympathy for the Gay and Lesbian community. I do not want them beaten or discriminated against either.

You can be gay or lesbian and live normally. Some just chose to be so flamboyant with it that makes it rougher for them. No different if I went around saying I am black and proud to every white person I saw just so they know it. Or brag to every person I know that I am a heterosexual and love women or that I am a devout Baptist religion wise. Some things are just better kept to yourself. But when I walk into any office, restaurant, place of business, I can not conceal my race. If I am gay, no one has to know. No different than if I have 20 women. LOL. No one will know that unless I tell them. Everyone can be themselves without broadcasting who they sleep with.

It is hard to have this discussion without examining the religious component due to the fact millions of people reject homosexuality strictly because of their religious beliefs. It is the biggest reason this issue is polarizing to begin with.

Well, it is difficult to ignore that homosexuals all over the world have been discriminated against, ostracized, assaulted, bullied and killed simply because they're gay.

Sounds like differing opinions from the same poster. Religious folks are some of the primary people persecuting gay folks around the world especially in Islam and Christianity.
And yes you're right, gay folks all over the world are being discriminated against simply because they choose to love and/or have sex with someone of the opposite sex. Seems to me that's their business just as long as they don't infringe on my personal rights.

The big difference is the concealment of one's sexual orientation is a lot easier than someone trying to conceal their ethnicity. Anyone with two good eyes could see that Jason Collins was a Black male from the date of his birth, but it took him making a public announcement 30 plus years later to the national media to reveal to most of us that he was gay, which is why we are having this discussion on this thread. Even his once fiancee claimed she didn't know.

it's the same principle with a different flavor.

What?

The folks at ESPN know he's a Christian fundamentalist. Why should he be suspended when he was asked his thoughts about Collins being gay and professing to be Christian?

.

Not only that, ESPN thrives on controversy. They have several shows with people taking sides of issues. That seems to be their business model - sports entertainment, hot women and guys arguing about some aspects of sports. All day, every day. If any company in the world knows how to make a profit from controversy, it's ESPN.

He will not ... and should not ... be fired for stating his opinion.

Dude, if the gay community raised a fit about what he said, he'd be out the door in a heartbeat. Seems to me that his comments slipped under the radar. There's more to society than fundamentalist religion in the south. Folks have become a bit more advanced these days regarding sexual orientation, but some have been left behind....especially in the deep south.

Left behind. Interesting you say that.

I seriously doubt he'd be out the door. That controversy would be too good for ESPN to resist. That means more television viewers and more hits on their website. Plus, the gay community is not a big part of ESPN's constituents anyway. Except for those bulldaggers that ... "play" ... women's ... basketball and the handful of folks that follow them. I doubt very many gay people even know this guy said anything. Gay folks don't have much affect on ESPN at all.

Not really. I can look objectively at this issue from both sides.

Because a lot of them want to flaunt it in your face. I don't hear the Doogie Howser cat complaining. I know some gay folks who feel like some exploit the way that they are for their own selfishness. They are not getting kicked to sleep on every street corner Kendrick. The Gays in the ATL damn near run that mofo. Same for San Francisco. So excuse me if I don't have an overwhelming sympathy for their struggle. What they want is the law to let them get married. Most companies already give benefits for partners. I say let them get married if that's what they want. But if no minister of his faith wants to conduct those ceremonies, then they should have a right to say no. If the states want to take on this and make it legal then they should bear the responsibility of seeing them have a civil union. But no Priest , Rabbi or Minister should have to go against their faith to perform those ceremonies.

I see them in the workplace and I have seen some in my very conservative Fortune 500 company move up the ladder. It isn't as bad as some of them make it be. I just don't buy into it. Do they run into prejudice folks? Sure they do. Are they discriminated against by some idiots? I am sure. But that is where you take legal recourse. They are not deprived of that. No different than anyone else.

I am for human rights. To be treated with dignity and equality. But I am also a realist. You can't change people's opinions about folks. Simple as that.

I've had very limited contact with gay people. Explain how do some gay people flaunt their lifestyle?

You can't be in the media industry or a journalist, because there are plenty gay journalist in the media, such as Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, Rachel Maddow, and damn near half of the people that have appeared on the Hollywood big screen.

If I have to tell you, then you really haven't been around a lot of them have you. LOL. Some are just Liberace type out there. The way they dress or look. The way they talk. You over emphasizing the point. You have seen it. You tube it up. LOL.

Remember that picture we saw posted about Magic's son. You can tell he is a flamboyant type.

I was about to say that. LOL. And Anderson Cooper is not flamboyant with his. Neither is Don Lemon. Ellen is a Lesbian and she speaks up for their rights. But she don't be out there bad with it.

That cat that plays Sheldon on the Big Bang Theory is Gay, so was the cat who played Frasier's brother Niles on that show.

These are national members of the press. Everyone knows they're gay because they've made it public.

I wouldn't know whether a male or female was gay unless it was revealed to me. But, now I work with several co-workers who are either gay or Lesiban. First time ever I've worked alongside those individuals.

Of course they're are gay people in the press. They're gay people in all lines of work. But that doesn't mean I've associated with those people, though.

To me, that ain't just being gay. That is a cross dresser and one who wants to be a woman.

That's Magic's boy or girl.

IMO, I think the creation of gay people is nature's way of controlling the human population, because if it wasn't for condoms and contraceptives, a mofo like me would probably have a few dozen kids by now. Although she was Catholic, my ex believed in her birth control pills.

Man it so many in Hollywood it's not funny. The dude on Modern family plays that way and he is. The dude on Will and Grace acted that way and is...This entire topic is sad. Mofo'd don't need to know who you smash... Keep that ish to your self...

:what: You Are A Liar...Now Take That Back :bawling:...I love Sheldon...They get all the good ones:lol:

Well, I work in DC. I believe a good 25% of the dudes I interact with are gay. I have been to a few functions where I believe I was literally the only straight brother in the room.

You sure you weren't at gay functions from the start? :emlaugh: This is the main reason why I only attend functions that the invitation caters mainly to heterosexual couples. In cities like DC and especially Atlanta, a person needs to read their invitation THOROUGHLY.
