Actually SMU wouldn't have been as good as thy were without that pay-for-play program they had, so in reality, this may be where SMU is supposed to be athletically anyway.

They could have taken all of their scholarships, fined them $600M, with 10 years of probation and it would not have been worse than the death penalty.
SMU still hasn't gotten over the death penalty.
Teams like USC, Miami and Alabama were given pretty stiff scholarship redutions, and came right back to win or be in contention for National Championships.
I won't even get into the embarrassment, and stigma the Death Peanalty would have caused.
Trust me, this ain't even close to being a death penalty.
