The member presidents of the Southeastern Conference unanimously voted to accept Texas A&M Tuesday night as the league's 13th member, but the Aggies' official acceptance has been delayed by the potential threat of legal action.

The SEC's presidents want assurances that no individual Big 12 school will sue for contractual interference over Texas A&M's departure. Baylor has not given that assurance to this point, according to sources.

"We were notified yesterday afternoon that at least one Big 12 institution had withdrawn its previous consent and was considering legal action," SEC chairman and University of Florida president Dr. Bernie Machen said in a statement released Wednesday. "The SEC has stated that to consider an institution for membership, there must be no contractual hindrances to its departure. "

I understand Baylor's position. Now that Texas A&M is out, the Big 12 is done. Texas, OU, OSU and Tex. Tech will go to the Pac-12. Iowa State, Kansas, K. State and Missouri could go to the Big 10 (even though some are saying Missouri could go to the SEC). Where else can Baylor go? It was because of Ann Richards that Baylor even got in the Big 12 when it expanded.

Good Baseball program as well.... but I dont see Baylor as a SEC fit... I do see Oklahoma, and Texas though... But for Texas they are going to have issues because of the TV deal...

Yep. I remember when then Gov Richards made sure the Big 12 took her alma mater. LOL. Baylor could be left out cold.

Baylor???? Why, you already have Vanderbilt and Baylor is just another Vanderbilt. The SEC is not looking for doormat schools such as Baylor, they wanted A&M because of the close proximity of Houston, Austin and Dallas. A&M also has top notch facilities, is very strong academically, has over $6 Billion in endowments and A&M has ~ 48,000 students on it's main campus.

Not a chance.
Big 10 won't even consider them.
 
...The SEC is smart. Adding Texas A&M, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE OTHER SPORTS of TEXAS A&M ARE adds ANOTHER STATE to their Conference.

...When I and others try to preach the SWAC should do the same with TN State, some of you find every excuse in the book not to. From my own opinion, some posters from ONE SWAC school in particular are just scared of TN State.

You opinion in this conference has the same weight as Alcorn, SU, Valley, etc. Quit Running and Start Desiring Competition.

Competition is why the SEC is such a powerful and dominant conference. They thrive for better competition. Competition makes them better.

A good fit for playing in the SEC West... Arkansas, LSU, and now A&M has tons of Alum in the Dallas area. Men & Women Basketball Top Tier and a Strong Baseball plus Track program. I see it as a good move to expand the SEC into the Dallas market even moreso. Baylor's athletics are better than Vanderbilt.

I don't see many differences at all. Iowa has a better overall athletics program than ISU, but otherwise, these schools are very similar.

I REALLY wish the SEC would drop Vandy....Vandy is better fit for Conference USA.

Those schools are not a part of the Research circle, The CIC, that all Big 10 schools are a part of. Nebraska was already in that research circle long before joining the Big 10 and the schools you listed are not. That is the MAIN difference and ONLY difference that matters.

These Big Conferences, UNLIKE THE SWAC, look at more than just football and other sports. If they only looked at sports, the Big 10 would have invited Oklahoma in with Nebraska just to keep that rivalry and all the loot that comes with it in tact.

This is the first I ever heard of the CIC. So I am saying up front that I don’t know anything about it. However, after doing a Google search, I found the following link on the history of the CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation)

It states “Following its admittance to the Big Ten in 1990, the CIC invited Pennsylvania State University to join the consortium.â€￾ So why can’t they do the same thing with other schools who wish to join the Big Ten.?
 
Baylor doesn't fit because they bring nothing to the table that the SEC doesn't already have. By adding TAMU, the SEC gets into the coveted Houston and Dallas market. Now the SEC will turn its attention to another market that it doesn't have a solid footing in. The 14th team will be about TV markets and money. The SEC's television contract with ESPN has a clause that allows for immediate renegotiation if the conference expands. I expect that when they sit down at the table with ESPN, that deal will blow away the PAC-12's.

Besides, Baylor doesn't have the tradition historically that would fit in with the SEC.

Iowa State, Kansas St, Kansas, don't have that long Penn State money, facilities, CLOUT or Connections to join shat like that and be ready to go from day #1. The only other school that the BIG 10 wants and would be ready to do that on an invite is Notre Dame.

There's a bit of an academic gap between the two groups, especially with Minnesota and Illinois. Besides, the Big 10 isn't expanding further just to expand, and none of those schools add anything to the conference.

I feel you on that. I know nothing about Iowa State, K. State and Kansas, but I don't think that is the case for Missouri. It was my understanding that part of the reason why Missouri was being looked at by the Big 10 the last time (along with Nebraska) was because of academics.

The Big 10 would consider Kansas and Missouri for sure. Missouri was on the list if Nebraska didn't come. Kansas is close and has basketball cred to go with it. So I would not doubt the Big 10 wouldn't look at those schools for sure. They have that academic cred that all Big 10 schools have as well. Especially Missouri.

It was. And Missouri has that cred to get in. Nebraska was just a bigger fish and the Big 10 took them instead. But Missouri had the credentials to meet the Big 10 standards.

Frat, the Big 10 would like ND. But ND is being stubborn so the Big 10 has said fugg it. We will not call you. You call us when you are ready. But the Big 10 commish has said many times that they are interested in other schools. So depending on who is available they will go get them. One faction of the Big 10 wants to snap up a school in the East. Right now Penn State is the only school with East coast ties. Pittsburgh may be one they go after or there was talk of Syracuse and on a smaller level Rutgers to get into NJ. All those schools have the cred the Big 10 wants.

Also don't be sold short on some of those other schools. Kansas has some clout. And they would love to have that basketball program in the Big 10. Iowa State has a terrific Engineering program. My division back in Minnesota hired a bunch of them cats. Athletically, they are very challenged because Iowa is the flagship school and a lot of kids who don't go to Iowa will go down the road to Minnesota and Illinois.

Notre Dame doesn't want to be part of any conference because they like being an major program that's independent. It's part of the school's identity that they don't want to lose. You talk to some ND alums around here, and they will tell you that they would rather be the lone wolf than join a conference. They refuse to be like everyone else.
