The Jackson State women’s basketball team kept Alabama A&M to just 11.1 percent from deep in a 2-for-18 shooting performance on the way to a 65-55 victory against the Bulldogs on Thursday.

The Tigers (4-9, 2-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 19 points and three steals. Jaileyah Cotton tacked on 12 points and four assists and Leianya Massenat chipped in as well with 11 points and five steals.

JSU grabbed 33 rebounds in Thursday’s game compared to Alabama A&M’s 28, led by six boards from Shalance Montoya.

Jackson State’s defense held Alabama A&M to only 11.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 35.4 percent from the field.

The Bulldogs did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass, either. They finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed two second-chance points, while Jackson State cleared 24 defensive rebounds.

Jackson State (4-9, 2-0) entered the second quarter tied at 11-11 after a tightly contested first period.
JSU got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for four of its 11 total points.

The Bulldogs then took control in the second quarter, and the Tigers entered halftime behind 30-24.

Alabama A&M continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 34-27 advantage before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Massenat, to trim its deficit to 34-33 with 6:28 to go in the third.

The Tigers kept the rally going and took control on a Zoe Cooper layup with 41 seconds left for a 48-47 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

JSU took advantage of six Alabama A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways and kept widening that lead to 65-53.
