Well GSU, we’re halfway through the basketball season and the Tigers of the hardwood have yet to win a game.
First year coach Joseph Price has produced a 0-17 start only being close in one outing against a winless Jackson State program.
Price has winning experience. He assisted Pat Knight in guiding a Lamar University team to a NCAA berth and being a standout player at Notre Dame; but even with his sociology degree he has yet to figure out just how to get this Tiger team to the winner’s circle.
Should Price carry the blame?
The Grambling program has compiled a 23-82 record over the last four seasons and has never played in the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament.
“This has really been a blessing and a dream come true for me.” Price said upon being hired by the university.
Price, who is not shy about saying he always had an inclination for an HBCU and wanted to play basketball for an HBCU institution, has a tough road ahead of him to turn this program around.
“I think the appointment of Joseph Price is further evident that we are very, very serious about restoring athletics to its historic position at Grambling State University,” said Grambling president Dr. Frank Pogue.
GSU athletic director Percy Caldwell said it was a tough decision but Price’s ability to positively impact a school’s program immediately is what made him the favor over the approximate 150 other candidates.
It seems the GSU administration feels “the price is right” based on those comments, but time will only tell if Price can ever get these Tigers to regain their stripes.
