Mickey Joseph fined for choice words for SWAC referees: ‘It’s some bull—- calls’

Mickey Joseph’s first season as Grambling head coach has been an uneven affair so far, but one thing the head Tiger believes is consistent is the slanted calls he feels his team is getting from the officials.

“I’ve just got to see what’s going with these penalties,” Joseph said of GSU’s 24-17 loss at Texas Southern this past weekend. “When I look at the film, it’s just not making sense to me. It feels like somebody’s been making business decisions with their feelings. As a grown man, I don’t know how to get past that with other grown men; why are they making decisions with their feelings? It puts us in a bad situation, but I’ve got to be a better head coach.”

When asked to clarify his position about “making decisions with their feelings,” Joseph unequivocally stated his position.

“I think it’s some bulls— calls,” he said. “They can take it how they want. They can fine me, whatever. It’s some bulls— calls. It’s consistent. I’ll stop right there because I know they’re going to shoot me a fine, but I’ve got the money to pay it.”

Monday afternoon, the SWAC responded by fining Joseph $5,000 and publicly reprimanding him for his comments.

“Joseph’s comments were made in violation of Section II, Article 12, Item I (Causes for Imposition of a Penalty) of the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws, and Sports Regulations,” the conference said in a prepared statement. “Future violations of the Conference’s Code of Ethics will result in additional penalties for Joseph, including an increased fine amount along with a one-game suspension.”

Grambling (4-4 overall, 1-3 in SWAC West play) returns to action this weekend in Daytona Beach against Bethune-Cookman.
