Texas Southern 62, Jackson State 52
HOUSTON, Texas – Texas Southern extended its win streak to six games with a ten point win, 62-52 over Jackson State on Monday.
Texas Southern (11-5, 5-0 SWAC) came out strong in this one. TSU opened up the first quarter on a 16-4 run to take a commanding lead early. Texas Southern would only allow Jackson State (7-9, 1-5 SWAC) so score 15 points in the first half, to lead 29-15 going into halftime.
JSU would cut into Texas Southern’s lead in the third quarter. A 8-3 run late by JSU trimmed TSU’s lead by three points to make the score 43-33 going into the final frame. The fourth quarter was a very even portion of the game, with each team exchanging buckets throughout. Jackson State would not be able to mount a comeback, leading to the defeat.
Chynna Ewing led Texas Southern in this one, tallying 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the win.
Kierra Adams notched her second double-double of the season for JSU. Knocking down 16 points and grabbing 10 boards in the loss.
Texas Southern and Jackson State will each be in action again on Saturday Jan. 21. TSU will face Arkansas Pine Bluff at 5:00PM CT, while JSU will take on Gramblin State at 3:00PM CT.
Prairie View A&M 51, Grambling State 49
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – A layup by La’Sha Haynes with 47 seconds left lifted Prairie View A&M past Grambling State 51-49, for the Panthers second consecutive win on Monday.
The Panthers (7-10, 2-3 SWAC) jumped out in front early, outscoring Grambling State (5-12, 3-3 SWAC) 19-11 in the first quarter. Grambling State would battle back in the second and third, outscoring Prairie View 19-13 in those frames, with six of those 19 points coming from John’ea Thompson, to make the score 32-30 in favor of the Panthers heading into the fourth.
GSU led 44-43 late, however a 7-4 run by the Panthers would propel the Panthers past the Tigers in this one.
Jeronia Allen led Prairie View with game high 23 points along with seven boards in the win.
GSU was led by Shakyla Hill and Monisha Neal, who each scored 15 points for the Tigers. Hill pulled down eight boards while Neal grabbed five.
Next up, the Panthers will face Mississipi Valley State while the Tigers will take on Jackson State. Both contests are set to get underway on Jan. 21 at 3:00PM CT.
Alcorn State 70, Arkansas Pine Bluff 48
LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff 70-48 on Monday. The win extends the Braves’ win streak to three straight.
Alcorn State (4-13, 4-2 SWAC) took control right from the opening tip. The Braves outscored UAPB (4-12, 1-4 SWAC) 20-9 in the first quarter, that was largely due to the Braves opening the game on a 11-1 run. The second quarter was much of the same. Alcorn State outscored the Golden Lions 20-12 in that frame to take a 40-21 halftime lead.
UAPB was much more competitive in the second half. However, the Lions would never be able to get back in the game. The Lions would be outscored by Alcorn State in each of the remaining quarters, 15-14 and 15-13 leading to the loss.
Alcorn State had very balanced scoring on this night. Henrietta Wells tallied a game high 15 points, while Brianna Luton and Tia Sanders also scored in double-figures, netting 13 and 12 points respectively.
Arkansas Pine Bluff was led by Niya Head, who netted 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.
Alcorn State and UAPB will each be in action again on Jan. 21. The Braves will take on Alabama State at 3:00PM CT, while UAPB will face Texas Southern at 5:00PM CT.
Southern 51, Mississippi Valley State 44
BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern earned its fourth win in a row Monday night, with a 51-44 victory over Mississippi Valley State.
A slow start for both teams gave way to a very even last three quarters. A 10-2 run from Southern (7-7, 5-1 SWAC) midway through the second helped the Jaguars take a 20-19 lead over the Devilettes (5-11, 2-3 SWAC) into halftime.
Mississippi Valley State would cut its deficit to just four points following a 6-0 run to close the third to make the score 35-31 entering the fourth. An 11-2 run by Southern to open the fourth quarter would help propel the Jaguars to the win.
Southern was led by Cortnei Purnell, who netted 16 points while grabbing three boards. Brianna Green added 11 points in the win.
Ashley Beals, scored 11 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double for the Devilettes in the loss.
Southern and MVSU each play again on Jan. 21. The Jaguars will take on Alabama A&M and the Devilettes will face Prairie View A&M. Both contests will begin at 3:00PM CT.
