Southern 87, Mississippi Valley State 81

BATON ROUGE, La. – Despite a season-high 29 points by Mississippi Valley’s Marcus Romain, Southern withstood a late Delta Devil charge to prevail 87-81 Monday night.

Southern(8-11, 4-2 SWAC), which controlled much of the contest, took a 12-point lead on a dunk by Shawn Prudhomme with 15:10 remaining. At that point, the Delta Devils flipped the switch as Darrell Riley scored 10 points during a 23-9 spurt that gave the Delta Devils their first lead of the game, 66-64, with 9:17 to go.

SUBR managed to regain momentum, and while MVSU got within one of the Jaguars, a 10-3 run keyed by LaQuentin Collins and Jared Sam (16 pts, 9 reb) pushed the Jags to an 85-77 lead that held the rest of the way.

Prudhomme led SUBR with 23 points. Riley ended his night with 19, a career high.

Prairie View A&M 94, Grambling State 82

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Zachary Hamilton, Troy Thompson and Tevin Bellinger combined for 73 Panther points as Prairie View downed Grambling State in a high-scoing affair Monday.

Hamilton scored a season-high 30 points, Thompson added a season-high 23, and Bellinger scored 20 with a career-high 11 assists. Hamilton did much of his damage in the first half, scoring nearly half of PVAMU’s points in the stanza. He netted 23 as the Panthers took a 47-37 lead into the break.

Grambling State (7-12, 2-4) cut the PVAMU lead down to seven early in the second half before the Panthers pushed the lead back to double digits. Bellinger’s three-pointer off of a Hamilton assist pushed the lead to 54-42 with just under 17 minutes remaining, and PVAMU led by as many as 15 the rest of the way.

Remond Brown put in 23 to lead Grambling.

Alcorn State 82, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 64

LORMAN, Miss. – Four Braves were in double-figures as Alcorn State bested Arkansas-Pine Bluff 82-64 during Monday night action.

Alcorn State trailed for the first nine minutes of the game before a DeAndre Davis lay-up gave the Braves (6-11, 3-3 SWAC) a 13-11 lead. From there, the game belonged to Alcorn State for the most part, as the Braves took a nine-point advantage into intermission. UAPB (4-15, 3-2 SWAC) got no closer than six, as Alcorn held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half.

Reginal Johnson led Alcorn State with 16 points and seven boards. A.J. Mosby flirted with a triple double as he scored 14, grabbed nine boards and dished our eight assists.

UAPB was led by Trent Steen’s 17.

Texas Southern 67, Jackson State 44

HOUSTON – A dominant second half of play pushed Texas Southern past Jackson State 67-44 Monday night.

Neither side could get much going in the first half, which ended with an 18-17 score in favor of Jackson State. However, JSU (7-12, 3-3 SWAC) was unable to solve its offensive woes while Texas Southern (9-9,6-0 SWAC) exploded to open the second half, going on a 25-3 run over the first 6:07 of the second half. Jackson State, which shot just 24.6 percent from the floor, was unable to recover.

Zach Lofton led TSU with 18 points, four boards and four assists. Marvin Jones added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Janarius Middleton (13 pts, 13 reb) had a double-double for JSU, but guards Edric Dennis and Yettra Specks struggled, each shooting 3-of-12 from the floor. Specks ended the night with 14.
