Southern 66, Grambling State 61
BATON ROGUE, La. — Adrian Rodgers scored 19 points, Trelun Banks made a key three pointer late and Southern held off Grambling State’s second-half charge on Saturday night to get its first conference win, 66-61.
Banks’ three pointer pushed Southern ahead 54-49 with 2:15 left, and Jared Sam’s layup stretched the lead to 58-51 at 1:05. Grambling State (5-10, 2-1) posed no threat from there.
Sam and Banks scored 12 points each and Christopher Hyder had 10 for the Jaguars (9-7, 1-2). They never trailed, led 33-21 at halftime and scored the first five of the second to lead 38-21.
Deonte Hearns scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, helping the Tigers overcome most of their 17-point deficit.
Ervin Mitchell’s basket with 6:33 left cut Southern’s lead to 46-44 and capped Grambling’s 25-8 rally. Mark Gray added 13 points.
Alabama State 75, Mississippi Valley State 74 OT
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Jamel Waters scored 13 points, and his late layup at the end of overtime proved to be the difference as Alabama State beat Mississippi Valley State 75-74 on Saturday.
The Delta Devils took their only lead in overtime when Damian Young made 1 of 2 free throws with 31 seconds.
This was the second straight overtime game for the Hornets who fell at Grambling State on Monday.
ASU’s Bobby Brown missed a three pointer as time was expiring, but Waters grabbed the rebound and his put-back won it. Waters nailed a three pointer at the buzzer last season to upend Southern.
The Hornets (6-9, 1-2) saw 13 points come from Tony Armstrong and Mikel Tyson, while Torloft Thomas added 12.
Marcus Romain led MVSU (1-15, 1-1) with 23 points on 8-for-27 shooting.
Williams’ three gave the Delta Devils a 65-60 lead with 3:04 to play in regulation before the Delta Devils rallied. Thomas made two free throws to tie it with 13 seconds left.
Alabama A&M 85, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 70
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M picked up its first conference win of the season with an 85-70 win in front of a home crowd at Elmore Gymnasium Saturday night.
Ladarius Tabb scored 31 points on 12-of-23 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the way for AAMU. It was his second 30 plus point effort and double-double this season.
Nicholas West scored 14 points, Rakiya Battle added 12 with six assists, and the Bulldogs (5-7, 1-2) never trailed.
Leading by six at halftime, AAMU pulled away 74-56 on a 13-4 run in which Tyler Davis and Battle each scored three pointers.
Adrian Edwards’ dunk with 1:44 to play put Alabama A&M up by 18 for the second time in the game and the Golden Lions got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
UAPB shot 51 percent from the field to the Bulldogs’ 45 percent, but was outrebounded 39-27 and Alabama A&M made 23 of 28 free throws.
Ghiavonni Robinson scored 24 points with 6 of 13 3-pointers for the Golden Lions (2-14, 0-2) and Charles Jackson added 13.
Jackson State 80, Alcorn State 71 OT
LORMAN, Miss. – Jackson State extended its win streak to four games Saturday night with an 80-71 win over rival Alcorn State inside Davey L. Whitney Gymnasium.
Paris Collins scored 26 points, and his three pointer with less than a second left forced overtime.
Collins scored half of JSU’s 12 points in overtime and the Braves only scored a field goal in the extra session.
The Tigers led 58-50 with 7:35 to play in the game, but the Braves used an 18-7 run to take a 68-65 lead before Collins’ forced the extra session.
Raeford Worsham had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Jackson State (8-8, 3-0). Chace Franklin added 11 points, and JSU shot 10 for 21 from beyond the three point arc.
The Tigers are 1-2 in overtime this season. Jackson State led 42-35 at the half.
The Braves (3-10, 1-1) got 14 points apiece from Devonte Hampton and Tamarcio Wilson.
Texas Southern 64, Prairie View 38
HOUSTON – Texas Southern won its third straight game in a row and made it five out of the last seven over rival Prairie View A&M with a 64-38 win Saturday at H&PE Arena.
Orlando Coleman scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds TSU.
Coleman was 5 of 11 including two from distance for the Tigers (4-11, 3-0). Chris Thomas added nine points and nine rebounds, David Blanks had nine points and eight rebounds, Malcolm Riley had nine points and five rebounds and Derrick Griffin had eight points and nine rebounds.
Texas Southern averaged 44.6 percent shooting from the field, 58.8 percent from the line and had a 46-26 rebounding edge over Prairie View.
Texas Southern led 30-19 at the break and cruised in the second half to the win. Jayrn Johnson scored 16 points off the bench for the Panthers (1-14, 1-2).
