Ettrick, VA- The Virginia State University Trojans overpowered the Livingstone College Blue Bears in an 87-79 Saturday.
VSU moves to a 10-3 overall record and maintains an unblemished 5-0 conference record.
Freshman guard Walter Williams led the Trojans with 16 points while junior guard and All-CIAA Preseason Pick Elijah Moore followed up with 15 points. Junior guard Kevin Williams recorded 14 points, senior guard Javon Moore tallied 12 points, and rookie guard Cyonte Melvin rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Trojans with 10 points.
VSU shot 34.3 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent from the line in the first half.
The Trojans and the Blue Bears exchanged leads throughout the first half as both teams played with high intensity. In the final seconds of the first half the Trojans took advantage of a trip to the line after a Blue Bears technical foul to cut their deficit to one point.
Following the foul, Williams drove to the basket to give the Trojans a 41 – 40 lead over the Bears heading into halftime.
VSU maintained their lead over Livingstone the entire second half. The Blue Bears fought back and chipped away at a 16 point Trojan lead to bring them within seven points with 3:19 remaining in the game. A basket by Melvin with 1:42 left in the game reinstated VSU’s double-digit lead.
The Trojan took advantage of turnovers and bench points to fuel them to victory.
VSU ended the night shooting 43.8 percent from the field, 45.5 percent from behind the arc, and 63.6 percent from the line.
