Alabama A&M Wins SWAC Volleyball Championship

aamu.gifAlabama A&M captured the 2007 SWAC Volleyball Tournament after two grueling championship matches with the tournament runners-up, the Lady Tigers of Grambling State University.

In the first championship match, Grambling State used a strong defensive presence and timely offensive opporunities to down Alabama A&M 3-2 (30-21, 24-30, 33-31, 22-30, 15-13). After a brief intermission, the Bulldogs came out firing and swept the Lady Tigers 3-0 (30-24, 30-17, 30-18).

Tamika Newman – Prairie View A&M

Brittani Lewis – Alabama A&M
Madinah Abdullah – Alabama A&M

Most Outstanding Player – Brittani Lewis, Alabama A&M (88 kills, five aces, 17 blocks, 57 digs)

SWAC Volleyball Tournament: Day Two Recaps

 

#12 – Alabama A&M d. Grambling State 3-2 (21-30, 30-24, 30-28, 28-30, 15-13)

AAMU’s Brittani Lewis and GSU’s Kayla Williams each had 22 kills in the match, but Alabama A&M was able to come away with the victory and move on to the championship match.  Lewis also had 17 digs and four blocks; while Williams had 16 digs and five blocks.

The Bulldogs, after falling in the opening game, was able to win games two and three on strong inside play.

For Alabama A&M, Cassidy Brazelton had 14 kills while Shondrell Clarke added 10 kills and six blocks.  For Grambling State, Kendra Johnson and Ashley cooper each had 13 kills and a block.  Cooper also finished with 14 digs.

 

#13 – Grambling State d. Prairie View A&M 3-2 (30-26, 30-22, 24-30, 13-30, 15-10)

Paced by a 13-kill, four-block effort by Shawonna Davis, Grambling State made their way into the tournament final with a 3-2 win over host Prairie View A&M.  Sonora Cole added 11 kills while Kendra Johnson and Jovon Lewis each had eight kills.

For Prairie View A&M, Tamika Newman had 17 kills and a block while Shaun Williams had 16 kills and two blocks.

 

#14 – Grambling State d. Alabama A&M 3-2 (30-21, 24-30, 33-31, 22-30, 15-13)

GSU’s Sonora Cole finished with 19 kills and two aces while teammate Kayla Williams had 14 kills and two blocks as the Lady Tigers kept their championship hopes alive.  Shawonna Davis and Javon Lewis each had 10 kills in the match.

For Alabama A&M, Brittani Lewis had 19 kills and five blocks while Madinah Abdullah finished with 14 kills, three aces and two blocks.

 

#15 – Alabama A&M d. Grambling State 3-0 (30-24, 30-17, 30-18)

The Bulldogs captured their seventh tournament title in eight years as they swept the Lady Tigers.  Paced by Tournament Most Outstanding Player Brittani Lewis (12 kills, five blocks), the Bulldogs used strong defensive play throughout the match to seal the victory.  Devonna Williams finished with seven kills and five blocks, while Madinah Abdullah and Cassidy Brazelton each had nine kills.
