Virginia Union is expected to add a pair of former standout players to the men’s basketball coaching staff for next season.
Former guard Jay Butler will be hired as the Panthers next head coach to replace Tony Sheals, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Butler will become the Panthers’ fourth coach since 2008. The newspaper also reports that former Panther and NBA All-Star Ben Wallace could be part of the coaching staff.
Sheals was reassigned within the university after a 9-18 season.
Butler has spent the last decade as the women’s basketball coach at the University of the District of Columbia.
As a VUU player, Butler helped lead the program to three CIAA championships and four Division II NCAA tournament appearances.
Wallace, who played for Virginia Union from 1994 to 1996, was First-Team All CIAA and was selected as a First Team All-American his senior year before playing for five NBA teams.
Wallace was a four-time NBA-All-Star, 4-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and was a key member of the 2004 Detroit Pistons’ NBA championship team.
