Grambling State 6, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 1
GRAMBLING, La. – Grambling State University defeated the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
The Tigers grabbed the first two scores of the game in the first inning with efforts from Nicole Ene and Chasity Thomas. Grambling continued its lead, scoring two additional points in the second and two runs in the fourth. T. Hawkins of UAPB scored the only run for the Golden Lions as she produced a single to get on base. Jasmine Hardwrick brought the run in with a double for a RBI.
Ene and Thomas shared a game-high scoring position, each registering two. Nicolette Wunderly was credited the win as she pitched seven innings with 11 strikeouts and seven forced outs. When faced with 27 batters, she only allowed three hits.
Southern 7, Prairie View A&M 1
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M University fell to Southern University and A&M College, 7-1, Sunday afternoon at the Lady Panther Softball Stadium.
In the last game of the three-game series, the Jaguars claimed their second win over the Panthers. The game started with a single from Alicia Barajas, who advanced to second base from a sacrifice bunt. A groundball to second then brought Barajas home. Neither team would score again until the third inning as the Panthers’ Jazmine Hicks crossed the home plate. Hicks hit a single to get on base and advanced to second due to a fielding error. Destinee Williams singled to left field and was credited the RBI.
Southern went on to score two points in the fifth inning and three in the seventh. Homes was credited the win, facing 29 batters and only allowed nine hits. Jamani Greer led the game with two runs, two RBI and two hits.
Alabama A&M 4, Alabama State 3
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama A&M University defeated Alabama State University, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
A score from Eriel Lawson gave the Bulldogs the first point of the game. AAMU went on to score another run at the top of the third as Ramos hit a homered to left center. The Hornets collected their only three scores at the bottom of the third with runs from Valerie Centeno, Kendall Core and Jenna Mae Thorne. A point in the sixth and a run in the seventh pushed Alabama A&M to the lead to win the game.
Together, the Bulldogs claimed six hits, two RBI, 21 putouts and 14 assists. Anisa Britt was credited the win as she tossed a strikeout and six forced outs. While facing 29 batters, Britt only gave away six hits and did not allow any walks.
The Hornets secured a total of six hits, three RBI, 21 putouts and 14 assists.
Jackson State 12, Alcorn State 0
Jackson State 13, Alcorn State 1
LORMAN, Miss. – Jackson State University collected two wins against Alcorn State University, 12-0, 13-1, Sunday afternoon during a doubleheader at the Alcorn State Softball Complex.
In the first game, Kelsey Townsend was credited the win with two strikeouts and nine forced outs. While facing 19 batters, Townsend only allowed two hits and one walk. Four Tigers each registered a game-high two runs – Canessa Swanson, Denisha Knight, Queen Briggs and Chelsea Smith, while Amy Lara earned three RBI.
The Braves managed their only score in the second game during the third inning. Adriana Gutierrez singled to the pitcher then crossed home plate after Taylor Hughes hit a double for the RBI. This match also ended in five innings with Jackson State scoring points in every frame. The Tigers best offensive efforts came in the third as they collected seven scores with only two hits.
In total for the second match, JSU secured nine hits, eight RBI, 15 putouts and four assists. The Braves provided five hits, one RBI, 15 putouts and eight assists.
