Bethune-Cookman Surrenders Late Surges in loss to South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats led for all but three minutes of Monday night’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tilt at South Carolina State, but those proved to be the deciding moments, as the Lady Bulldogs made surges at the end of each half to win 68-61 at the Smith-Hammond Middleton Memorial Center.

Kendra Cooper led all scorers, matching a career high with 25 points on 47 percent (8-for-17) shooting. Her seven three-pointers matches Gwen Davis and Keturah Newkirk for the fifth-best single-game three-point shooting performance at B-CU.

Kayla Crawford finished the night with 14, while center Kailyn Williams notched her second double-double of the year with a 12-point, 10 rebound performance, in addition to three (3) blocks.

The Lady Wildcats (3-6, 1-1 MEAC) will return to campus for finals week and return to action next Monday (Dec. 15) at historic Richard V. Moore Gymnasium in a 7 p.m. meeting with Akron (7-0), who will be playing just their third game away from home.

Lady Hawks knock off North Carolina A&T

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Seeking their first 2-0 start in conference play since the 2009-10 season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team extended their winning streak by defeating North Carolina A&T (NCAT), 58-43, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES secured their fourth consecutive victory while snapping a seven-year skid against the Aggies, dating back to February 2007.

With the win, the Lady Hawks moved to 4-4 overall (2-0 MEAC) while NCAT dropped to 6-3 (1-1 MEAC) on the season.

Senior guard Jessica Long spearheaded the Hawk attack, posting a game-high 20 points, six dimes, five boards, and four steals. Junior forward Alexis Udoji notched her fourth double-double on the season, recording 14 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

The squad shot nearly 46-percent from the field (20-of-44) while the Aggies were held below 30-percent (16-of-56). Furthermore, the Lady Hawks connected on 40-percent from downtown (4-of-10) whereas NCAT managed 29-percent (2-of-16).

For the Aggies, Christina Carter had team-highs in points (17) and steals (4). Debbie Smith chipped in 10 points while Eboni Ross added six boards, four points, and two steals in a losing effort.

This Saturday (12/13), the Lady Hawks take their four-game winning streak to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC-Upstate in non-conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Lady Pirates win MEAC Opener over Morgan State

HAMPTON, Va. – Behind a career-high 19 points from junior guard Ryan Jordan, the Hampton University women’s basketball team won its conference opener 63-43 over Morgan State Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (3-5, 1-0 MEAC) have won their last three games.

Jordan shot 9-for-12 from the floor, making her only 3-point attempt of the night and grabbing five rebounds. Redshirt junior forward Tyler Hobgood grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Senior guard Kenia Cole also had eight points, as well as five assists and five rebounds.

The Lady Pirates shot 41.8 percent (28-for-67) from the floor and hit seven of their 21 3-pointers. Hampton also held a 44-39 edge on the glass, and the Lady Pirates turned 23 Morgan State turnovers into 23 points.

Morgan State (2-7, 0-2 MEAC) shot just 29.8 percent (14-for-47) from the floor and went 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) from behind the arc.

Braennan Farrar led the Bears with 16 points.

The Lady Pirates return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 17, when they play host to No. 1 South Carolina at 7 p.m.
