If anybody thought the SWAC football race was beginning to settle into a predictable rhythm, Friday and Saturday delivered a reality check.
Four games. Four surprises. And suddenly, the conference picture looks a whole lot different.
Florida A&M crashed Alabama State’s homecoming celebration. Southern knocked Prairie View A&M off course. Mississippi Valley State picked up a statement victory against Texas Southern. Then Grambling State closed the weekend with one of the biggest results, defeating Jackson State.
It was the kind of weekend that reminds everybody why the SWAC remains one of the most unpredictable conferences in HBCU football.
More importantly, these weren’t just four unexpected results to talk about on Monday morning. They could have a lasting impact on the division races, championship aspirations and the pressure building on teams that can no longer afford to overlook anybody.
Florida A&M crashes Alabama State’s Homecoming
Homecoming is supposed to be a celebration. For Alabama State, it became a missed opportunity.
Florida A&M’s victory over the Hornets disrupted what could have been a significant step forward in Alabama State’s season. Homecoming games carry extra emotion, but they also come with expectations. Losing one on your home field makes the disappointment sting even more.
For FAMU, the win offers an opportunity to build momentum and strengthen its position in the conference race. The Rattlers have shown they can disrupt the plans of a team with bigger expectations, and that matters as the schedule gets tougher.
For Alabama State, the challenge now is responding. One loss doesn’t erase the Hornets’ potential, but it does make every remaining conference game more important.
In a race where a single Saturday can change the outlook, Alabama State cannot afford to let one disappointing result become a trend.
Southern delivers a blow to Prairie View A&M
Prairie View A&M entered the weekend with championship expectations, but Southern had other ideas.
The Jaguars’ upset was another reminder that change happens quickly.
The implications could extend beyond one loss. In a division race where every conference result matters, Prairie View now has less room for error. The Panthers must regroup quickly, particularly with other West Division contenders looking for opportunities to climb.

Southern, meanwhile, gets a confidence boost ( and a historic first SWAC win for Marshall Faulk) and a result that could become increasingly valuable down the road.
The Jaguars have also sent a message to the rest of the conference: Maybe they’re not that bad after all.
Mississippi Valley State does it again
Mississippi Valley State’s win over Texas Southern might not generate the same national attention as Grambling’s victory over Jackson State, but it could be just as important to the Delta Devils.
For a program searching for momentum, beating a conference opponent provides something more valuable than a good performance in a loss: a result that counts in the standings.
Mississippi Valley State can use the victory as a foundation for the remainder of its season. The next step is proving it wasn’t a one-week breakthrough.
Grambling State Stuns Jackson State to cap the chaos
If the weekend needed one final twist, Grambling State supplied it.
The Tigers defeated Jackson State, 45-38, in a result that underscored just how volatile the SWAC can be. Jackson State has championship ambitions, but Grambling showed that reputation alone won’t win games in this conference.

For Grambling, they now lead the SWAC West.
Jackson State, meanwhile, must deal with a setback amid an injury to starting quarterback Jared Lockhart, who did not play in the second half against Grambling State. The Tigers cannot afford to let the loss linger, especially with the conference race becoming more crowded and unpredictable.
