Mississippi Valley State is making a habit of turning seemingly hopeless situations into unforgettable victories.
The Delta Devils scored 24 fourth-quarter points Saturday afternoon to erase a late 10-point deficit and stun Texas Southern, 38-34, at Thorne Stadium.
It was Mississippi Valley State’s second consecutive comeback victory and another painful collapse for a Texas Southern team still searching for answers.
With less than five minutes remaining, Texas Southern appeared to have the game under control. Instead, the Tigers watched their lead disappear in the final minutes as Mississippi Valley State delivered two decisive scoring plays to steal the victory.
The win improved the Delta Devils to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in SWAC play, putting them in a tie for first place in the SWAC East. It also marked the first time Mississippi Valley State has won consecutive games since 2021.
Josh Brown leads Mississippi Valley State’s rally
Mississippi Valley State quarterback Josh Brown played a central role in the comeback, delivering the two biggest plays of the afternoon.
With 4:42 remaining, Brown connected with Dayvian Bluitt on a 71-yard touchdown pass that immediately changed the game’s momentum. What had been a comfortable Texas Southern lead suddenly became vulnerable, and the Delta Devils had new life.
Brown wasn’t finished.
With 42 seconds remaining, the quarterback took matters into his own hands, scoring on a 16-yard run to give Mississippi Valley State its first lead since the first quarter.
The late touchdown completed a stunning turnaround and left Texas Southern with little time to respond.
For the Delta Devils, the finish was another demonstration of their ability to remain competitive even when the scoreboard suggests otherwise.
Another week, another Mississippi Valley State comeback
Saturday’s result was particularly remarkable because the Delta Devils had already pulled off a similar feat the previous week.
Mississippi Valley State overcame deficits of 24 and 17 points to defeat Prairie View A&M, then followed that performance with another rally against Texas Southern.
Two consecutive comeback victories tell a story about a team that has continued to fight regardless of the circumstances. Even more significant, the back-to-back wins mark a milestone for a program that had not won consecutive games since 2021.
The Delta Devils have shown they can finish games, but repeatedly falling behind by significant margins leaves little room for error.
Still, consecutive SWAC victories have put the program in a more encouraging position than it occupied earlier in the season. At 2-1 in conference play, Mississippi Valley State is tied for first place in the SWAC East, giving the Delta Devils a legitimate opportunity to influence the division race.
Mississippi Valley State is changing the narrative
Two weeks ago, Mississippi Valley State’s season looked considerably different. Now, the Delta Devils have consecutive comeback victories and a 2-1 conference record to show for their efforts.
The wins over Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern won’t erase the team’s earlier struggles, but they provide tangible evidence of progress and give the program momentum heading into the next stretch of the schedule.
Its place in a tie for first in the SWAC East makes the latest victory even more meaningful. Mississippi Valley State still has work to do, but the Delta Devils have put themselves in position to compete for a division title while ending a drought of consecutive wins that stretched back to 2021.

Texas Southern, meanwhile, is left searching for answers after watching another winnable game slip away.
In a conference known for unexpected results, Mississippi Valley State is providing one of the season’s most remarkable storylines.
The Delta Devils have rallied from double-digit deficits in consecutive weeks, secured back-to-back victories for the first time in five years and climbed into the thick of the SWAC East race.
Mississippi Valley State isn’t just pulling off comebacks anymore. It’s putting itself in the conversation for a division title.
