When it comes to team efforts, the Norfolk State football team can count Saturday’s winning exploits as very special.
Redshirt senior Jason Wonodi returned two punts for touchdowns and placekicker Marco Peery was 5-for-5 on field goal attempts as the Spartans rolled over Hampton 42-21 in the annual Battle of the Bay.
The win helped the Spartans improve to 2-2 on the season and doubled their win total from 2025.
Hampton (1-3) led 7-0 after an Amari Pryear 21-yard touchdown run, then NSU countered with a 22-yard Peery field goal.
After Wonodi returned a punt 37 yards deep into Pirate territory, quarterback Deljay Bailey scored from a yard out to give the Spartans a 10-7 lead.
Norfolk State trailed 14-13 when Wonodi fielded another Hampton punt and zoomed 76 yards to the end zone to give the Spartans the lead for good with 6:42 to go in the second quarter.
Peery booted three second half field goal to open up a 28-14 NSU lead in the fourth quarter. Ravon Moore Jr. scored on a two-yard run and Wonodi picked up his second punt return score from 57 yards out as the icing on the cake.

Wonodi collected 170 yards on three punt returns and Peery made field goals of 21, 48, 26, 46 and 27 yards.
Hampton quarterback Tre’Von Taylor completed 13 of 24 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns, but was harassed into two interceptions and was sacked six times by the Norfolk State defense.
