Langston University is turning to one of Oklahoma’s most decorated basketball figures to lead its women’s program into a new era.
Hall of Famer Crystal Robinson, a former WNBA first-round draft pick and championship-winning coach, has been named the 12th head women’s basketball coach in Lady Lions history.
“I am honored to join Langston University, an institution with great heritage on and off the court,” Robinson said in a statement. “Very few people get the opportunity to pursue their dreams in multiple eras. I missed an NAIA championship twice as a player; now I am excited to chase that dream alongside our student-athletes and my new Langston family.”
For Rogers, the addition of Robinson signals more than just a coaching change — it represents a bold step toward elevating the program’s championship aspirations.
“It’s not every day you have the opportunity to hire a first-round WNBA draft pick and four-time Hall of Famer,” athletic director Donnita Rogers said. “We are welcoming one of Oklahoma’s and the NAIA’s greatest basketball players to Langston University to push our women’s program to new heights.”

Robinson comes from a winning background
A standout at Atoka High School, where she earned WBCA High School All-American honors in 1992, Robinson went on to become a dominant force at Southeastern Oklahoma State. She collected three NAIA First-Team All-American selections, earned NAIA National Player of the Year honors in 1996, and led the program to consecutive national championship game appearances in 1995 and 1996.
Robinson’s legacy has been cemented in multiple halls of fame, including the NAIA Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, Southeastern Oklahoma State Hall of Fame, and the Atoka Hall of Fame — a testament to her lasting impact on the game in the state.
Robinson’s playing career extended far beyond the college hardwood. Selected sixth overall in the 1999 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty, she carved out a professional career that spanned more than a decade, including time with the Washington Mystics and international stops across Europe before retiring in 2007.
Robinson began on the WNBA sidelines with the Mystics before quickly proving her leadership at the high school level, guiding McAlester High School to a Class 5A state championship in her only season at the helm. She later took over Murray State College and added Division I experience as an assistant at Utah State and TCU.
Most recently, Robinson has remained embedded in the WNBA coaching ranks, contributing to a championship-winning staff with the Seattle Storm in 2018 and adding experience with the Dallas Wings, Phoenix Mercury, and Chicago Sky.
