A former NBA No. 1 overall pick is going to take on leadership role at an HBCU basketball program.
John Wall, a five-time NBA All-Star, has been reportedly named Howard University basketball president of operations, according to ESPN.
Wall, who was drafted by the Washington Wizards and spent 10 seasons with the club, will be part of the Howard staff after retiring from the NBA in August.
Wall’s connection to Howard began earlier this year when he served as the team’s honorary captain on Jan. 31 and expressed interest in a future front-office role.

Wall has quickly become a hands-on presence within the program, contributing to team meetings, recruiting evaluations and transfer portal strategy, according to the report.
“Stepping into this role is something I’m truly excited about,” Wall said in a statement. “Washington, DC has always been my second home, and it means a lot to me to be able to come back and pour into a community that’s given me so much. Howard is an HBCU program that’s proving to the world that Black Excellence has no limits. To be part of what is building here and help shape the future of these young men is something I take a lot of pride in.”
His responsibilities include helping oversee roster management, NIL opportunities, revenue sharing, agent relationships and player mentorship. He will work closely with head coach Kenny Blakeney and general manager Daniel Marks.
Howard is coming off a MEAC championship and NCAA Tournament run where it beat UMBC in the First Four, securing the program’s first-ever tournament win.

Wall played 11 NBA seasons and finished his career averaging 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game. He most recently served as a NBA analyst for Prime and NBA TV.
