This edition of the HBCU Sports Podcast with Kenn Rashad featured a live conversation with John Grant, Executive Director of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and the Celebration Bowl.
Grant, who has led ESPN’s two signature HBCU football properties for nearly a decade, pulled back the curtain on how these showcase matchups come together—and why they matter far beyond the field.
He revealed that matchups are scheduled years in advance, with schools already booked through 2029, and explained how regional proximity, band culture, and fan travel shape which teams get selected. But beyond scheduling, Grant stressed the business of visibility: “Every televised game is essentially a three-and-a-half-hour commercial for your university,” he said, urging schools to monetize stadium signage, field logos, and broadcast exposure as new NCAA rules open fresh revenue streams.
The discussion also touched on broader issues facing Black college sports. From NIL pressures and the transfer portal to shifting corporate sponsorship landscapes, Grant argued that HBCUs can still compete by leaning into authenticity, cultural value, and smart strategy. He highlighted examples like Jackson State and South Carolina State, which turned Celebration Bowl exposure into millions of dollars in media value.
In a candid personal moment, Grant also shared his own journey—from industrial engineering to transportation, to leading the 100 Black Men of Atlanta and running the Atlanta Football Classic, before being recruited to ESPN. Along the way, lessons from leaders like Ambassador Andrew Young shaped his philosophy of “reluctant leadership” and moving from success to significance.
