With Larry Vickers heading to the SEC to take over the Auburn women’s basketball team, Norfolk State has called upon another alum to take over as head coach of the Spartans.
Norfolk State announced the hiring of Coppin State head women’s basketball coach Jermaine Woods as its next coach.
Woods received his bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University in 2011 after a storied college basketball career at the Division III level.
Beginning his coaching career at the high school level, Woods got his first Division I collegiate coaching job in 2013 at Virginia Tech.
He then went on to have stops at Old Dominion and Wake Forest before being hired as an assistant coach at Coppin State in 2020.
As a Coppin State assistant, he helped coach Jaia Alexander to a MEAC Player of the Year nod, making her the first Eagles player to win the award since 2008.
The Norfolk State alum served in this role for two seasons before he was promoted to head coach ahead of the 2022-2023 season.
Woods helped the Eagles improve their record each season, culminating in a 2024-2025 season in which he led them to a 19-15 overall record.
This marked the team’s first overall winning season since 2022 and the most wins they’ve had in a season since 2012.
