After giving up the first points of the game, No. 23 Jackson State did not trail for the remaining 50 minutes as it pulled away from UAPB 41-3 on Homecoming inside Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Jackson State (7-2, 5-0 SWAC), winners of five consecutive games, used 141 yards from Irv Mulligan on the ground, a pair of touchdowns from Ja’Naylon Dupree, and four touchdowns accounted for by Jacobian Morgan to cruise to the conference win.
Mulligan reached the 100-yard mark for the third consecutive game, averaging 7.1 yards per carry on 19 carries with a touchdown. He led a rushing attack that ended the night with 247 yards on 48 carries.
Meanwhile, Dupree finished the night with three receptions for 57 yards, with a pair of those going for touchdowns. Isaiah Spencer finished with a team-high four receptions for 46 yards, while Marvin Landy finished with three receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Morgan finished the night 14-of-22 for 187 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 26 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.
“I can’t say enough about this football team right now,” head coach T.C. Taylor told the media after the game. “We’ve really got it going in the right direction, and they played hard; we’ve got some explosive guys all over the field.”
Jackson State outgained UAPB 434-217, with the Tigers holding the visitors to just 67 yards on 27 carries. Shamar Hawkins led the team with eight tackles with a pair of those going as sacks. The Tigers finished with six tackles for loss and four sacks, with Joshua Nobles and Phillip Webb finishing with a sack each.
“We spend a lot of time on film work; we just know what they’re gonna do,” said defensive back Shamar Hawkins. “Every week it’s something new, and we’re gonna take on that challenge every week.”
