In an announcement that wasn’t all that surprising, Jackson State football coach T.C. Taylor officially named Jacobian Morgan as the starter at quarterback for the Tigers’ season opener at Louisiana Monroe on Thursday.
Morgan appeared in six games for JSU in 2023 after returning from injury, completing 83 of 123 passes for 842 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 150 yards with six touchdowns.
“Leadership. Developing as a leader. He played some football before we got him here, but he’s really starting to play a lot of football now,” said Taylor about why he decided to go with Morgan as the starter. “This is a big year for him. He understands it. He got better reading defenses.”
The second-year head coach also praised Morgan’s development as a passer during the offseason and his ability to build rapport with the team’s wide receivers, which enabled him to beat out transfer Cam McCoy and Zy McDonald.
“I thought, you know, the summer was critical for him, developing relationships with the receiving room. That’s why summer was so important for him. But he’s gotten better in all those aspects of the game.”
